so-so style guide for novices

This is a decent style guide that I might recommend to someone who has no clue about how to dress well, or what constitutes a good wardrobe. It's a starting point, with some helpful information on shirts, suits, pants, shoes, coats, accessories, personal grooming, and tips on wardrobe maintenance, packing a suitcase, and so on. For someone with a moderate budget who needs to build a wardrobe from the ground up, the checklist type approach in the Esquire handbook could work well. The book is a convenient size, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring it with you on your next shopping trip.

That said, it's not a very good resource for someone who already has a working knowledge of menswear and who wants more detailed information, and there are some other issues worth mentioning. There are no color photographs, which should be a priority when color is so important to many of the parts of a wardrobe. Illustrations and photos are used interchangeably, but a few of the illustrations would work better as photos.

Some important things are glossed over or skipped entirely. In the shoe chapter, there is virtually no information on shoe construction. There are many different ways to make and identify a good shoe (and a bad one), but you wouldn't know it from this book. There is a two-sentence definition of goodyear welts, and that's about it. For garments, there is almost no information about fabrics, fabric weights, weaves or patterns. You'll know lots of cute little trivia about what kind of collars wall street bankers like to wear, but like the shoe chapter, you'll be left ignorant about what defines a well-made shirt. There are five pages dedicated to watches, but the book is very light on substantive information. It's great to know what watch Chow Yun Fat wore in The Corruptor, and that Al Gore's digital Timex projects a stately and professional image (!?), it really is. But all you learn from this book is that Omega watches are sweet, you can match watches with cufflinks, and mechanical watches are more expensive than quartz. Great. For a man investing money in a wardrobe, the watch is likely to be the most expensive thing he wears, and the most costly to maintain. There should have been at least five more pages on the subject.

There are two things in this book that stand out as extremely goofy. Out of left field, Donald Trump is showered with praise in two different chapters for his impeccable style, power, and unparalleled business acumen. From page 173: "the tycoon has never lacked the courage of his convictions. His hairstyle is no exception. It's an assertion of control and an expression of his approach to business...nothing is left to chance." I hope the huge check Esquire got for this shameless fellatio-in-print didn't bounce. But I'm probably being unfair. I'm sure Esquire must be referring to a different Donald Trump. The Donald Trump I know of went bankrupt over and over and over again, has a hairpiece that's been an object of ridicule all around the world for 25 years, and now makes a living by ranting about the president's birth certificate and putting his name on awful $15 "executive" dress shirts made in China that not even Ross and Burlington Coat Factory can sell.

Almost as goofy as the ankle-grabbing Trump love is a diagram on one page telling men to never, ever wear a necktie or cufflinks with jeans.....and on the VERY NEXT PAGE Jay Z is exalted for wearing a necktie and cufflinks with some baggy jeans, or as they say, "faultlessly blending Savile Row swank with sly street funk." Grampa, is that you? Who on God's sweet green Earth says "sly street funk"? Speaking of grandparents, this book is surprisingly out of date. About 60% of the men featured in the photos have been dead for decades. It's nice to see some timeless styles, but come on now.

This book is more style than substance (har har), and the authors get more caught up in brand names and cute little lists of "wardrobe essentials" (all of which can be found at your nearest Macy's ;D ) than informing readers well. It's not an accident that if you flip through any random issue of Esquire or GQ, you'll find ads for every single type of product mentioned in this book. Every single one. You might say the book is an advertisement for other advertisements. But considering the price, portability, and the breadth of information, it's not a bad introduction to style. Just be sure to use the book only as a starting point.

And one more thing. The front cover label of my book was glued on upside down. Nice one, guys. Nice one.

Focused on timeless style, not current fashion.

I received this book yesterday and have read through the first couple of chapters. I am a typical nerdy engineer type with very little dress sense. However, I have recently decided to change that and have been shamelessly asking help from my wife and her friends. This book is a great combination of 'cookbook' (X works better with Y than Z) and guide (this is why X works better with Y than Z). Not all things are explained in detail, but it's a good start.

I think the lack of color photos adds rather than detracts from the experience. The book is NOT about current fashion trends, but on acquiring a timeless style. As such, the black-and-white pictures are extremely helpful in seeing the fundamental style of the clothes, which was exactly my goal here. Another huge plus is that it does not recommend specific brands or expensive gear. It's all about a very minimalist wardrobe with a few well-chosen items that can be mixed-and-matched for a wide range of occasions. I also highly appreciate the cleaning and maintenance tips for different kinds of clothing.

I think this is a great purchase for somebody who wants to look a million bucks without being gimmicky (and without spending that amount!).

Excellent book on fundamental mens style

I have had this book for several years now and I still go back to it from time to time. It not only has great advice but has a sense of humor that makes it more fun to read. No matter if you are just starting to buy a wardrobe or have had one for years and you are concerned about style and correctness this book is a must. I would say that if you want to dress well the last place you should go is a mens magazine which purpose is to sell you clothes that are in style for only a year or two but this book thankfully offers advice that will last as long as you do.

About the Author
Nicholas Perricone, MD, FACN, is a board certified clinical and research dermatologist. A brilliant scholar, Dr. Perricone completed medical school in just 2 1/2 years, graduating at the head of his class. He completed his internship in Pediatrics at Yale Medical School and his Dermatology Residency at Ford Medical Center. Dr. Perricone is regarded as the father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Wrinkle Cure (Rodale Reach May 2000). Warner Books published the trade paper edition in May of 2001. It reached # 1 on both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times bestseller lists March 24, 2002 and remained there for four weeks. Close to one million copies are in print. Just pick one book

Actually, all of Dr. Perricone's books should have a 5 star rating, but please, don't waste your money buying all of his books like I did. I liked the first one so well that I bought all of his other books. I thought there'd be some updated info, maybe some new recipes. They are all basically the same book, some word for word, with different titles. One book is definitel worth the money though. You feel better and look better in as little as 3 or 4 days just by following the diet without the supplements. I'm a bit leery of the expensive supplements. His supplements seem overpriced. Maybe there really is a difference in quality, I don't know. If I'm going to shell out hundreds of dollars a month for supplements, they'd better make a BIG difference, and one that I can see and feel right away.

Ignore the weird-looking girl on the cover and read this book!

This book has some really sound advice in it. I followed most of the suggestions (only I just incorporated the advice into my current eating patterns, I did not follow the diet mentioned in the book), such as: eating good fats and protein with meals, taking a good multi-vitamin. I did not buy any of the expensive skin care products mentioned in the book, and I have seen good results.

Perricone Clear Skin delivers!

What I particularly like about this version of the Perricone Prescription lifestyle choice program is that it includes an extensive chapter on yoga instead of the high-sound sorts of jock/sports club ideas of getting and keeping fit. It seems to be essentially the same as the larger, more expensive volume with a concentration on what input directly does to outbreak and outcome all over the body, plus functioning of the brain. Buy it!

My daughter loves this book! We used it at the beginning of potty training, and gave the jewel stickers to her every time she went potty. We never used the chart, but it's a really cute idea. We read it most nights, and it gets her to use the potty one last time before bed without a fuss.

Rural shrinkage has been the unseen corollary of Japan's extraordinarily dynamic twentieth century urban expansion; indeed, Japan's postwar economic miracle has been achieved at the expense of rural retreat. Potentially disastrous is the negative-sum game that national depopulation triggers, as one community's gain becomes another's loss. Japan's Shrinking Regions in the 21st Century reveals how communities are responding positively to these emerging circumstances, delivering a message of hope and vitality to shrinking regions worldwide. Setting Japan alongside Europe, and with an epilogue describing the Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown of 11 March 2011, the book offers policy makers and practitioners up to date advice for community revival born of extensive collaborative fieldwork across the whole Japanese archipelago. An incredible collection I'll be reading again and again.

How have I been I sci-fi fan for 40 years and not discovered this guy? I'd forgotten how delightful and open-minded sci-fi could be before zombie-infested dystopia and the sad return of so many societal taboos to the PC age. Maybe that's why I am appreciating it at this point in my life. That Varley is an excellent writer made this collection even more of a pleasure.

It's too much to review all the stories, so I'll focus on the one with the same title as the book, Persistence of Vision. This story could keep a (very open-minded) book club busy for at least a year.

The very basic idea is communication without sight or hearing. The way Varley tells it is poignant and unabashed, and yes, it has a solid plot and developed characters. It wasn't lost on me that I was not seeing or hearing this story, and that even having to use words to be silently read was making it a bit harder for Varley to communicate everything. Also, after reading the section about the blind/deaf community, I went back and realized that every conversation in the book had related meaning; for example, the shrugs and grunts of the Navajo. Intrigued? Good.

Varley uses language beautifully; concise, symbolic, poetic. Here's an example from Persistence of Vision: "Orbiting atomic bombs twinkled in my mind, up there somewhere, ready to plant mushrooms when we'd exhausted all the possibilities." That's an awesome sentence just by itself, but when I realized how it ties into the rest of the story, my mind was blown!

Where should I start...

Powerful. Enjoyable. Thoughtful. Fascinating. Funny. Gifted. First-Rate. Original.
Nine stories that show us the future of man, with his flaws, his merits and his outward spread from Earth. John Varley thinks big also. In many of his stories it is pointed out that mankind was kicked off of the planet Earth by...somebody.
See, that is the best part. Many of the stories happen in a setting in which much of the background is unknown to us or just hinted at. But the heart of the stories are always people, their emotions and needs. Some sex too.
Many of the short stories were later used to create some very interesting movies.

Well worth seaching for

A friend recommended this to me, and amazingly my local used bookstore had a hardcover copy! These are some of the BEST short stories I have read! Right up there with Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. There is not one clinker in the bunch. Especially liked Phantom of Kansas, Hall of the Martian Kings, The Persistance of Vision. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank was quirky and fun. (I also saw a low-budget movie version on the Sci-Fi Channel) Air Raid seems to be a precursor to Millenium.
If you happen to see a copy of this, grab it fast! You won't be sorry.
