Wish someone would do a better job writing about these three amazing men, their relationship as well as the company they created

I was an executive at Intel from 1984-1999 (Corp. Vice President) and had the honor of knowing Noyce, Moore and Grove. I found the book odd. It was very superficial about so many things and then would go in depth on other things. The section on Andy's early life was overly detailed while there was not enough about Gordon. Frankly, the book feels lazy to me. It felt like Malone just wrote up thing he could easily find. He was suppose to have access to Intel's archives for whatever that is worth. We were thought not to keep much because of legal issues. There were also a number of factual errors.
I did benefit from learning more about the early years at Fairchild.
Hated the title by the way. It is worth reading this book as long as you realize that it is just a piece of the story of these three amazing men and even less a history of Intel.

A Must Read Book

This is a "must have" book for anyone who wants to know about the early history of integrated circuits, the microprocessor, and Silicon Valley. The Valley of Heart's Delight, as it was known before Don Hoefler's 1971 naming, was and is truly an amazing place with remarkable individuals. As a young electrical engineer, I first came out to Palo Alto because there were two minicomputer companies with headquarters within two miles of each other -- Varian Associates and Hewlett-Packard. HP had just gotten into the minicomputer business in 1967 and was eager to sell its new machines. They gave my upstart Ann Arbor-based company $100,000 worth of equipment and 60 days credit terms to pay for it. Our company had a net worth of $3,000 and I was 25 years old. HP had the true Silicon Valley start-up spirit.

The next time I came to the Bay Area was when I read the Electronic News two page advertisement for the 4004 chip on November 15, 1971, "Announcing a new era of integrated electronics -- a micro-programmable computer on a chip." Few believed. None of the 80 or so minicomputer companies, led by Digital Equipment and Data General, took it seriously. Luckily I did and moved here.
Mike Malone perfectly captures this whole era in Part II: Start-Up (1968-1971) and Part III: The Spirit of the Age (1972-1987).

Mike Malone explains the three different personalities of the founders. When you call Andy Grove "paranoid" he certainly was.
Andy believed spies were everywhere. When I went to an analyst meeting and arrived early, I went to the bathroom with my briefcase. A secretary quickly followed me into the bathroom and told me I had to check the briefcase before being allowed into the analyst meeting. I said this was ridiculous and she replied that this was on strict orders from Andy Grove. Another time, when I asked a technical question, Andy Grove prefaced his remark by accusing me of being "a Motorola spy." I made the mistake of saying that the 16-bit Motorola 68000 microprocessor was a superior product. Read Chapter 20, "Crush", in which Mike Malone explains that the great marketing of the microprocessor beat the great engineering of Motorola.

If you weren't in Silicon Valley in the 1970s, 1980s or 1990s, you can capture the spirit by reading this remarkable book.

Important business lessons from Intel's history

Intel’s greatest strength has been its willingness to take huge risks, even betting the company, according to Michael Malone in this book. On the occasions when those bets have failed, the company has clawed its way back into the game through superhuman effort and will,... and then immediately gone on to take yet more risks.

The story starts in September 1957 when the “Traitorous Eight” employees of Shockley Transistor left to form their own company, which became Fairchild Semiconductor. When Fairchild started falling apart a decade later, two of its key scientists and leaders, Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore, decided to start a new business, and Andy Grove joined them as their first employee at Intel. The book goes on to describe Intel’s ups and downs over the ensuing 45 years.

Gordon Moore had first observed in 1965 that the complexity of integrated circuits was doubling every year, and in the 1970s the doubling of computer chip performance every two years became known as Moore’s Law. Intel Corporation, as the keeper of Moore’s Law, proceeded over the next several decades to innovate at the required rate, using a combination of science and business cunning to stay ahead of its competitors.

It is a well-crafted story, although perhaps a bit longer than necessary. Intel seems to have “come roaring out” or “come roaring back” after downturns quite a few times, and the traits of some characters get repeated a bit. I have no personal knowledge of the key individuals, but can’t help suspecting that they have been a little bit stereotyped. For example, I suspect that Andy Grove’s attitude towards Bob Noyce was more nuanced than the animosity portrayed by the author.

Notwithstanding these minor issues, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Intel Corporation has had a profound effect not only on the field of electronics but on the world as a whole. It has been one of the key players in the digital revolution, and there is a great deal to learn from the manner in which the company has been run, and its successes and failures over the years.

About the Author
Stephen Shea is an associate professor of mathematics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and a B.A. with a major in mathematics from The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachussetts. For years, Professor Shea has used his ability and interest in mathematics and statistics to analyze professional and amateur sports. At Saint Anselm College, he teaches a course titled Quantitative Analysis in Sports. He has participated in the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference. His work has been featured as a finalist in the annual Stat Geek Idol competition on TeamRankings.com and in the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports. As a mathematician, he specializes in dynamical systems, probability and statistics, and he is actively researching and publishing in these areas. Professor Shea’s education and experience is reflected in his sports analytics. He lives with his wife (Cara), two sons (Miles and Gavin) and daughter (Eloise) in Hooksett, New Hampshire. Christopher Baker received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. As a software developer, Mr. Baker has focused on Microsoft .NET Web Development and Microsoft SQL Server Database Architecture and Engineering. As a sports analyst, he has spent the past eight years developing advanced player projection algorithms, new concepts, and new metrics in Hockey and Basketball. He is a member of the Society for International Hockey Research (SIHR) and the Hockey Summary Project, where he has studied the development of the game of Hockey statistically over its vast history. Mr. Baker uses his combination of knowledge in sports and software engineering to design and develop efficient methodologies for calculating and visualizing metrics used in real-time systems. He was most recently published with Stephen Shea in the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports for their work entitled “Calculating Wins Over Replacement Player (WORP) for NHL Goaltenders.” Christopher lives with his wife (Francine), son (Michael) and daughter (Annabella) in Lake St. Louis, Missouri.

I needed to learn about HOW some of the more popular metrics for assessing player value were created. It's tough to find a good resource that takes the reader through the thinking/ rationale that leads to the formulas... until now. The authors do a great job surveying existing metrics, providing valid critiques, and proposing new metrics for measuring player and team quality. Among my library of resources for students, this has quickly jumped to the top of my list. It's readable. Methods are grounded in good science and good statistical practice. Factor adjustments also make sense. I plan to find more work by these authors to learn more.

Interesting and easy read. I never took the analytical side of basketball seriously as a player until now and this text has given me a greater understanding of the game as a whole. This would be a great read for coaches who have the time and ability to replicate the analytics and then capitalize on other teams and players weaknesses.

Clear and Logical introduction of performance measurement - In All Sports

A clearly written and logically organised study of building metrics to understand why sporting teams win.

Whilst the focus of this book is on team and player metrics for basketball, there are a lot of valuable insights for people who are interested in other sports (in my case, that's Australian Rules Football). This is because the authors talk explicitly about the process of measurement, and walk the reader through the evaluation of the basketball metrics they are specifically constructing. The principles and concepts referred to apply to any sport.

The writing is very clear. One thing I've found with a lot of books about sports analytics is that the writing gets a bit "florid". Not with this book, and that makes it quite accessible to people outside of basketball.

Another interesting feature of the writing is the comment on "future directions". Sports statistics is technology dependent, and there is an increasing amount and type of statistics becoming available as new technologies are introduced.

I also liked the sophistication of some of the concepts introduced. One chapter on team evaluation talks about lineup entropy and refers to Shannon's entropy from Information Theory. Another chapter talked about developing new positions that expand on the traditional positions in many sports, and contribute to our understanding of how games evolve. In Australian Rules Football, for example, players playing in traditional positions tended to stay within their assigned zones, whereas these days players roam all over the playing field.

All in all, a well written book with a lot of thought provoking material that is relevant to many sports, not just basketball.

Conversational English can be challenging.

This book has a unique way of introducing and repeating basic conversational English. However, at times I wonder about the word choice of the author. My students seem to appreciate the translations that are imbedded in the text and it makes them feel more comfortable learning English. The repetition is frequent and allows for numerous practice opportunities of targeted vocabulary. It is easy for the teacher to adapt additional vocabulary when necessary although plenty is provided. The cost of the book makes it affordable for my students and that is a plus.

Excellent Book!

I've been giving a helping hand to a lovely, hard-working couple here in Baja that own a small business. They have also lived in the U.S. for a number of years - and they do speak English (he more than his wife) but have problems with grammar, spelling and punctuation and want to expand their vocabulary. The business requires that they deal with many foreigners on a daily basis - including the need to open accounts and write e-mails to respond to questions. The written word is a real stumbling block. This book will help to be able to read in English with the exact translation in Spanish. I also ordered Painless Grammar (Barron's Painless Series) which is an excellent book for someone reasonably versed in English but needing help in writing, punctuation, to cap or not to cap a letter, etc. They make a great companion!

¡Este es un libro básico que debes tener en tu biblioteca personal! Es ligero y lo puedes llevar a todas partes contigo. Como su título lo dice te presenta todas o la mayoría de las conjugaciones en oraciones que te permiten rápidamente incorporarlas en tu discurso diario (escrito o verbal). Lamentablemente no viene con audio para corregir la pronunciación pero está muy completo en las conjugaciones de los tiempos que las personas reales utilizamos no solo tiempos presente, pasado y futuro! Ejemplo: Yo pude haberlo hecho - " I could have done it" ¡Y muchos más!
Yo conocí este libro en México pero nunca lo valoré tanto hasta que me di cuenta que no podía expresarme en inglés. con la misma confianza y complejidad con la que lo hacía en español ¡Hay muchos libros que te muestran la gramática y varias conjugaciones complejas pero no lo hacen de manera clara o concisa y este libro sí! Todo el contenido está organizado en esquemas o graficas sencillas y viene con traducciones en la versión afirmativa y negativa de la primera forma del singular y en la tercera persona del singular con varios ejemplos. ¡Lo más importante es que comienza con las conjugaciones elementales y termina con las más avanzadas sin dejarte dudas!

A "must read" for the new paradigm against terrorism.

To Prevail is a compendium of works by eminent scholars and practitioners who stress the importance of understanding the distinct changes in the threat to U.S. security, and debunk the myths created and circulated by the ignorant and uninformed. Historically, we have viewed the threat to our national security as being associated with a government, linear in development, in accordance with well-understood rules of engagement, and an enemy whose tactics, weapons, and assets were relatively easy to detect and recognize.

There are a number of identifiable security threats-drug trafficking, terrorism, proliferation of WMD-which constitute a `clear and present danger'. As long as human discontent, and/or greed exist, fanatics and killers will be globally recruited. By using 9/11 as a reason, `causas-belli' to target not just the terrorists themselves but countries that harbor them, the Bush administration has created a major precedent. This does not amount to a foreign policy of carte blanche; but it does mean that the United States and other Western countries can coerce belligerents and rogue states to crack down on terrorists, or take other preemptive action. That's the new order of things.

The intelligence community, which has gone into a lamentable decline since the Carter administration, is primarily deficient in handling the new world order in special operations personnel, linguists, and operators/analysts with in-country experience due to an over reliance on technological surveillance. A more effective approach to the intelligence challenges would be an amalgam of people and technology. The new paradigm for intelligence operations should be:

· Strategy

· Individual self-generated motivation

· High core operating competencies

· A leader-based microculture

· Improve and strengthen military & law enforcement capabilities

Even if Farinella’s artwork is pretty crude, the fact that he and coauthor Roš are bona fide PhD-holding neuroscientists assures that they know what they’re talking about. Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, they depict the adventures of a young man who, by means of a pretty girl reading a book, falls into what seems to be a forest but is actually the brain. There he meets a couple of Nobel laureate scientists who explain brain morphology to him before sending him into a neuron, where more top researchers elucidate brain pharmacology. After inadvertently overindulging there, he plunges into a cell and, thereby, brain electrophysiology. Further episodes acquaint him with plasticity and synchronicity in the brain before he is reunited in an epilogue with the pretty girl. The information relayed is sufficiently genuine for the book to be a neophyte’s primer on brain science, and the manner of its presentation is certainly exciting enough to sustain interest. Though Farinella’s drawing chops leave something to be desired, this handy introduction to neuroscience is a handsome artifact. --Ray Olson

Entertaining 30 minutes

A quick, entertaining read through the brain. Neat introduction to how our brains works and an excellent gift for children and adults alike. Made me wish the authors would pair up to draw/write more in-depth graphic novels for medical students or college students interested in the matter.

The recipes look so good and delicious! I am not a nutritionist but mine told me that veggies and fruits are a great addition to my diet especially since I am trying to lose a lot of weight and change my current lifestyle. I always used to head to the nearest fast food joint whenever I was hungry but hopefully I can finally kick the habit!
