Much the same as her previous " Falconry Care, Captive breeding and Conservation" - but was well worth doing as is underlines serious points and issues. On the whole a very good book with excellent information and photography. The author does as with the last book seem to have a very high opinion of herself and holds herself up as THE FALCONER in Britain today.
I was concerned that the author also seems to put the notion across that her Falconry Centre is the only good one in the country and that everyone else is just either playing at it or only in it to make money - as if she isn't what with at least two books, courses, displays etc... I do believe that she holds the welfare of the birds as her highest priority, but this can only be maintained with adequate finance as is the situation with everyone else.
Note : Cover picture - Buzzard only held by one Jess 2nd page in - one of the jesses is not secured properly to the swivel, preventing the swivel from working properly.. Pages 78,79 and 81, these are surely unhelpful pictures to put on public view - a falcon shying away and hanging from the fist.The anti-hunting lobby would love this.

A more accurate title for this work would be "An Introduction To Basic Falconry Housing and Equipment With Half A Page Devoted To Hawk Training".

It was not helpful to me in the slightest. If you know nothing about keeping birds of prey or just have a cursory interest in the subject then this book would be a good light read for you. If you are looking for something that will give you serious insight and tips into successfully training captive birds of prey then you're wasting your time w/this one.

This is a fantastic book - IF it suits your purposes. If you already have a massive textbook on the subject of orchestation (e.g., the Cecil Forsythe book) this book would potentially be redundant. However, used as what it claims to be - a concise, literally pocket-sized desk reference for the working composer or orchestrator - it is easy-to-use and informative. It contains basic information about every instrument, including ranges, transposition, tone color, tricks and special notation, impossibilities for players, and occasional scoring/arranging tips. For a novice like myself, it's very informative when read cover-to-cover; for an experienced orchestrator, it might still be handy for quick checks. Either way, highly recommended!

Great little pocket dictionary of orchestral instruments, range, technique, etc. I take one star off because the paper. Paper is not as heavy and opaque as I would prefer. The content, however is excellent and the format is very convenient.

Interesting little book

This humor book is filled with gestures from around the world... sure to insult, entice or just aggravate others without even knowing the language. The book has photos of models illustrating the gestures, along with a written description of each and the rational behind each. Funny and rude at once it is a good introduction to the most common form of sign language.

Georgescu-Roegen: a missed Nobel prize

Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's fame is due to his book The Entropy Law and Economic Process (1971) in which NGR conjugates thermodynamics and economics. But his importance for political economy goes far before the publication of this book and involves many different aspects of the analysis. While the complete theoretical framework described by NGR has been frequently contested, his analysis of the production process has been considered as truly innovative and useful, by many points of view.

Brilliant, but not Perfect

It must be admitted that Georgescu-Roegen's understanding of entropy was flawed. He, along with many other authors including physicists, thought entropy was a measure of disorder. It is not. That entropy is not a measure of disorder is discussed in a recent scholarly article by chemistry Prof. Frank Lambert, who has a nice web site devoted to the topic. More to the point, it was also discussed in Beard and Lozada's book about Georgescu-Roegen (p. 88, "Economics, Entropy, and the Environment: The Extraordinary Economics of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen"). It's not easy to say what entropy actually is, but it is straightforward for scientists to measure that, say, the standard entropy of one mole of iron (about 55.8 grams of iron) is 27.7 Joules per Kelvin.

While Georgescu wasn't completely right about all of entropy's aspects, his attacks on Boltzmann's H-Theorem, and on the "information as entropy" school, show completely correct understanding of other aspects of entropy. Furthermore, in his indictment of neoclassical dynamic economics, he was the vanguard of critics who decry slavish devotion to mathematical models which assume we know the future (at least probabalistically). Absorbing Georgescu's lessons would've spared Economics Nobel Laureates Merton and Scholes their disastrous experience running the failed hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management (described in the book "When Genius Failed"): change happens, the past does not always predict the future, and the consequences of one's actions sometimes cannot be imagined by anyone. When investing money, that's a good perspective; when talking about man's effect on the environment, as Georgescu was, it's a perspective that could save the planet.

Far Too Negative on Nuclear Power which emits no CO2

The author covered very negative subjects on the one energy source that could displace the Big Gorilla - fossil fuel, and that is nuclear power. I know the fossil fuel industry through people like the Koch brothers pay scientists and writers to put out negative information about nuclear power to insure they will never take over from fossil fuel, even though they are clean, smoke and soot-free and do not emit CO2. It would be good to hear the author come clean about whether his negatives views of nuclear were inspired by fossil fuel money.

Just Okay... Book has many grammatical errors and does lots of content repeating. It reads as if the author did lots of Wikipedia research then summarized. About the Author
David Emory Shi is a professor of history and the president emeritus of Furman University. He is the author of several books on American cultural history, including the award-winning The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture and Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture, 1850–1920.

George Brown Tindall spent many years on the faculty of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was an award-winning historian of the South with a number of major books to his credit, including The Emergence of the New South.

Great Textbook

I can't really complain to much about this book. Very informative however I felt the chapters were kind of all over the place. For example when talking about the colonies one mintue you could be talking about the middle colonies and then something different and come back to more information about the middle colonies. Very easy to understand the text however.

The book has great content but the glue from the first 100 pages ...

The book has great content but the glue from the first 100 pages or so came loose. Those pages just fall out now as I get farther into the book.
