Awesome Resourceful Book

Very Resourceful book. This book has a wide variety of scholarships to meet you at every stage of your educational level. Whether you are fresh out of high school, or going back, it's here. They even have scholarships you can apply for as early as middle school. I love how the beginning of the book list scholarship tools and information and the importance of applying for scholarships. I definitely recommend this book.

Very helpful information. I think the layout could be greatly improved on, however. For example, in the section where the scholarships are listed by location, why not actually sort them by location? In other words, have all the scholarships applicable to Iowa grouped together. I don't need to sort through 150 pages of stuff that is mostly irrelevant to me.

Oh, so that's what happened to Joey Bishop

Mr. Starr should be complemented for taking the time to write a book about a comedian that has been long forgotten. I would have preferred a longer book but perhaps Mr. Starr was afraid of being redundant. One reason that the book is not longer, I assume, is that Joey's career does not really lend itself to a study of a body of work.

Joey--when he was at his best--had the ability to snap a very witty one-liner. However, while not stated in Mr. Starr's book--I believe that Joey's real downfall was the laziness he exhibited on his late-night talk show. He never really took the time to do a monologue or prepare any post-monologue comedy bit. Instead, he let Regis share the opening spot with him and then he went right to his guests. That would never sell today and it didn't sell in the sixties.

Mr. Starr takes the time to indicate how Joey was unbearable to much of his staff, somewhat reminiscent of various accounts of how Eddie Cantor treated his radio staff. But Joey and Eddie do share one extremely admirable trait--a dedication to charitable causes (as set forth by Mr. Starr) and for that alone, Joey deserves our respect.

Incidentally, Mr. Starr's recounting of one Joey Bishop joke about the Texan who goes to Israel is one that I'll be telling people for a while.

Readable book about a marginal entertainer

Ask anyone under 45 about Joey Bishop, and the response you'll get will be "Who?" Michael Seth Starr aims to change that, although you'll be wondering by the end of the book why he bothers. Bishop was, at best, a marginal figure in the annals of American entertainment. During the 60's, he somehow managed to share the stage with superstars like Frank, Dean and Sammy despite having none of their charisma. And although Starr often describes him as the "top comedian of the 1960's," he also has to admit that Johnny Carson thrashed him in the late-night ratings, and Bishop's early 1960's sitcom was an utter flop.
Still, the book is readable. Bishop comes off as a hard-working, but demanding comic, with few friends. I hope he truly got good audience response in the 60's, because the lines quoted in this book fall flat on the printed page. I guess you had to be there. Starr is a good writer....perhaps he will choose a more intriguing subject for his next bio.

Denigrating and Skimpy Bio of Famed Comedian

Joey Bishop was the least-known of the Rat Pack and became the last of the group to have a biography written about him with this demeaning book. It is written tabloid-style by a writer who appears to go out of his way to denigrate his subject.

The book is way too short--less than 180 pages of material including photos (the last 50 pages list his TV episodes and movies)--and skips through Bishop's career with few details. This isn't a deep, insightful look at the man's personal life or his work. Instead it's rehashed clippings from magazines like TV Guide. So it's just a peripheral overview of the subject. Bishop deserves better.

In the final pages the writer reveals why the book is filled with so much negativity--Bishop wouldn't cooperate with him on it and in his one face-to-face meeting with the star, the author felt verbally attacked. Okay, so Joey was hot-headed with co-workers and as he aged got grouchy. There are dozens of similar stories of rich Hollywood celebrities that are the same. For some reason this book seems to only emphasize the negative aspects of Bishop's life (except for a couple token mentions of Joey's charity work, such as going deep into Vietnam to visit soldiers--and even that gets dissed!).

You certainly don't come away understanding the subject any better. There's only a passing mention of Bishop's wife and son. There are almost no first-person accounts by people involved with Joey. Instead it is quotes from magazines, lengthy quotes from Rat Pack routines and excerpts from Regis Philbin's book that mentions his time with Bishop. And there are numerous small factual errors and mixing up of dates.

Since the book is the only source on the subject, it's worth reading if you are extremely interested in Joey. But be prepared to be disappointed.

easy read and very information - highly recommended

Before reading this I didn't think that I'd ever want to be called a salesperson, but it's clear to me now that sales is a NECESSARY life skill that I can't afford to do without. This book teaches you the subtleties in sales technique...which I've now learned are confidence, attitude, curiosity, discipline, focus, honesty and lastly knowledge. Robert's experiences in various forms of selling contribute to his depth of knowledge on the subject matter. This was a quick, easy read and very information - highly recommended!

All too often, books by "celebrity" authors are little more than brazen attempts to play off their name recognition, with weak content that doesn’t really carry the publication. This book is different.

"Shark Tank" celebrity Robert Herjavec really has something to say and he delivers his message of value in a way that is pleasant and interesting.

He talks about his life, including his fears and failures, in a way that is frank and disarming. He talks about "Shark Tank," about sales, about life in general and about success in particular. Herjavec and his collaborator, John Lawrence Reynolds, have done an excellent job of distilling a substantial amount of practical wisdom in a way that is easily digestible, with lots of entertaining stories about Herjavec’s life and numerous insights that have developed from those experiences.

Fundamental Success for Any Business - Sales

I had the advantage of having an advance reading copy of this book. I love this book and believe that it is must reading for every serious executive. This book is strictly focused on sales. In fact, the author points out that "The most important thing you will ever sell is yourself." The book is broken down into easy to read chapters. This is a very practical book and Robert Herjavec shares real life experiences. However, I would rate the book more inspirational than practical. One of my favorite parts of the book was when the author listed the ten things you need to do when making a change in your life. I could easily see this becoming the next book that the author writes. The point of this book is to remind the readers of the fundamental truth for the success of any business, and that truth is great businesses learn how to sell. This is a fundamental truth that is often forgotten. Would be a good book to give to any sales person in the organization.

Something new, something old

I've always loved the original USPC manual that I owned (still own), and while I really do think it was high time that the manual be updated, I'm a bit disappointed that the Standards of Proficiency weren't included. I can understand WHY they weren't, but I'm going to miss being able to pull out the D-Level Manual and look at the requirements while IN the section being examined; it was super helpful for myself at the D-Level, and I'd hoped that the new manual would be the same for my younger Pony Clubbers. Ach, well!

I'd also like to caution people who want to use this manual as a guide to learn to ride -- Pony Club comes from the English hunt tradition, which was very much about forward seat and getting over fences. It's not the best way to teach a child to ride, and it's certainly not something you should use as any sort of manual to train a horse. (I would recommend classical texts, but that's my preference.) However, like my boss is always telling me, Pony Club is the gold standard in horse management (with few exceptions,) and the manual is worth buying for the horse management section alone!

Not just for kids

I consider this a "must have" book for all new horse owners. If every owner knew what was in this book, there would be a lot more happy horses. The most comprehensive book I've read to get you started with horses, For less than the price of one riding lesson, you will have a huge amount of information at your fingertips. Great illustrations and descriptions. I buy several when on sale, and give to new horse owners.

Good for Adult Beginners too

The trainers at my barn recommend this series for the adult beginners too (like me). I have found this and the 'Intermediate' book highly readable, straightforawrd and helpful. They are highly instructional and cover aspects of riding, groundwork, horsecare, and tack. They are a great supplement to instruction.

About the Author

Duncan C. Richardson, PE, has worked 43 years in engineering, construction, and commissioning of heavy industrial facilities. Prior to becoming an engineer he was a full time journeyman craftsman and technical writer for 12 years. He is licensed by NCEES as a professional engineer in six states and also has 10 construction licenses by state examination. He is presently working for PGESCo (Power Generation Engineering and Services Company) under a consulting contract with First Egyptian Engineering. Having participated in over 100 industrial engineering and construction projects, 40 of which were power plants and often as manager supervising all disciplines, his industry experience includes process, plant, maintenance, and infrastructure engineering in mining and desalination, water treatment engineering (including in the Red Zone in Iraq), and power engineering in the United States, South America, the Middle East, and Asia. Mr. Richardson has worked for such companies as Bechtel Corporation, El Paso Energy, and Portland General Electric; conducted formal classroom and on-thejob training for operations and maintenance plant personnel; and started and ran an independent engineering consulting firm.

Necessary Tool for any Power Plant Commissioning and/or Plant Engineer

Mr. Richardson has done a superb job here providing the basic design input, operating conditions, limitations and cautions, not to exceed, that are prerequisite for any hands-on power engineers. That is not to say that design engineers should also read and heed - saving us field guys some aggravation by better understanding how the subsystem interface. Overall the book provide first of all safety parameters that are a must to all of us that for sure could help novice engineers learning basics, Power Engineering 101 and experienced guys who might have been overlooking something - sort of 'if all else failed read the instruction' alike.

... a good insight into the perfume industry

This book is unashamedly chemical, written by and for chemists. It is multi-authored, but all the contributors are currently or were previously employed by the same company, Quest International, giving a cohesive approach to the content. The editor, Charles Sell, welds the various chapters together to give a good insight into the perfume industry. 

After an introduction on the history of perfumes and fragrances and on perfumery materials from natural plant sources, the longest chapter of the book covers the chemical synthesis of perfume ingredients, especially terpenoid ones. The industrial syntheses developed by the various companies in the fragrance business are well described in chemical and economic terms and accompanied by reaction sequences. 

The rest of the book shows how these basic ingredients produced by the chemist are used to develop fragrance products through formulation, and outlines all the other issues that the industry has to consider such as fragrance perception, fragrance performance, stability testing, biodegradability, safety and toxicology. 

A final section deals with the future search for new fragrance ingredients which the authors claim will involve chemists using their synthetic skills, inspired by nature, and aided by computers. 

A sniff page is included, the scent of which lasts long enough for the reader to finish the book in a cloud of lavender.

Very informative, excellent text

I also own Scent and Chemistry, this book is a lot easier to read. It's more well written and easier to comprehend, there are no annotations/diagram numbers breaking up every sentence. The diagrams are much fewer in number than the aforementioned text book but no less informative. If you are a student of perfumery this book is invaluable, I highly recommend it!

Very good book, covered many topics and subjects , to understand this book well, you should have a chemistry background , I think the benefite from this book is gaining wide knowledge not technics ,,, the structure activity relationship chapter is one of the advanced subject about finding new fragrances, specially about odor behavior and physical chemistry of the fragrances,,,
