Must have for any tox student

My only complaint for this book is the lack of chemical equations but beyond that this book is absolutely wonderful. I discovered it accidentally while doing an assignment from the Google preview and knew I should have it to prepare for my qualifying exams. It has all the classic toxic agents, gives history of them, and the explanations for the mechanisms are simple, easy to understand and quite detailed. And when a toxicant has multi-system effects he references them for you, so it's easy to keep track. He also provides his sources for further reading at the end of the chapter. I love this book!

The real deal

I'm a professional software engineer with twenty years experience, so I've read my share of computer books and dipped into hundreds more.
This is quite simply one of the best computer books I've ever encountered. A classic.
So many computer books are just rehashes of vendor documentation, vague or misleading or wrong in all the same places the vendor documentation is. This book is different. The author clearly has tested every assertion with his own "spelunking" code. He explores every nook and cranny of COM+, and every sentence is carefully considered, clearly stated, and as far as I can tell, absolutely accurate. There's no "hand-waving", no BS, it's just absolutely solid. Crystal clear, razor sharp.
It's a shame, really, that the title is "Transactional" COM+. I had the book for quite a while before I got around to reading it, because the title misled me into thinking that if I wasn't using transactions then it didn't apply to me. Wrong! This book covers COM+ generally, not just transactions, with particular emphasis on the elements of COM+ that are most likely to affect scalability of middle tier applications. Want to know what threading models to use in components called from ASPs? Want to really understand why? This is where to find out.
It's a serious work and really deserves to be studied with some care, but whatever effort you put into studying it will be amply rewarded.
If only all computer book authors were as smart, as conscientious, and as intellectually honest as Tim Ewald. Bravo!

After reading this book there's only one question left....

...What the hell is the IMarshal3 interface?
The previous reviewer seems to be disappointed that most of the book's sample code is written in C++. Alas, at this time (and until the moment, perhaps in the second release of .NET, when the COM+ component services are implemented in managed code) a significant part of the COM+ infrastructure is simply inaccesible from Visual Basic.
As the title and the preface state, the book's focus is on transactions in the COM+ environment of Windows 2000. Perhaps a list of "requirements", and don't take these too serious, will decrease the number of disappointed readers:
The reader should:
-know the basics of COM
-be comfortable reading C++ code (Although VB or JScript is used now and then)
-know, or read up on, the ATL util classes (CComPtr, CComBSTR)
-same thing for OLE DB (& the ATL consumer wrappers)
What the book does not cover (and again, this is stated in the preface):
-LCE (COM+ Events) and QC
-CRMs
-Security topics
The structure loosly resembles "Essential COM". (that's a compliment :-) )
In my opinion the book delivers on it's promises.

Writing a COM+ application ? You _NEED_ this book!!

If you're an architect or developer working on a COM+ application that needs to be scalable, you should read this book. If defines what scalability is, explains how COM+ applications should be written to achieve scalability, and explains in clear and concise detail, COM+ concepts such as apartments, contexts, activities and causality.
A lot of people just don't get COM+. Whether this is due to the absolute trash that is written about COM+ in a lot of others books or MSDN, I don't know. You simply cannot stick all of your components into a COM+ application and expect it to scale. It just doesn't work like that. Even if you think you've got your design right, there are lots of hidden caveats to catch you out. You need to understand what COM+ does with your components, how it manages context, the cost of this management vs traditional non-configured components etc
This book presents a clear picture of how to do things the right way. It starts at a nice high level, and drills down into more detail as the chapters fly past. Further more, it gives you a warm feeling that the author really has worked on real world applications, and not just written `play and experimental' applications. Other books have come close to this (the Richard Grimes and James Conard books sprint to mind) but this is the best to date.
In Summary....
If you think you know COM+ inside out, read this book and see how your understanding of COM+ fits with what Tim has to say. I'm glad to say I fully agreed with nearly every word, and couldn't put the book down. I learnt a couple of things too, so I'll certainly be changing our applications in future releases.

Excellent Book!

I never like to lose more than 10 pips on one trade, it's like a red line for me that separates staying cool in a trade and doubt taking over: this book fits my risk profile to the pip-> therefore, a scalper I am.

After making it halfway through the book and putting the setups to the test, it has become clear to me that Bob (hope you don't mind me calling you Bob) went the extra mile to uncover the fundamental details that are required to successfully trade his setups. In my experience, 98% of the other books out there (especially Forex books) leave those little but essential details up to you to figure out over time. The problem with that is, if you are lazy and want something for nothing like many of us do, you are probably gonna drop those other books fairly quickly, jump back on your horse, and continue your search for the Holy Grail (instead of doing the hard work that is required to be successful with them).

Good news, in this book, Bob has already done all of the hard work for you. This book is like food-stamps for the starving trader. I highly recommend this book.

Most Excellent

For some time I have wanted to jump into learning price action trading. The trouble is, there is not a lot of material out there. Of course, there are Al Brooks' excellent books. But, if you are like me, digesting and understanding Brooks is like unraveling riddles of the sphinx - most difficult and fraught with expensive mistakes. Enter Bob Volman's book. Volman's lucid treatment of what could be a dry subject is refreshing. Volman's writing is clear, sometimes funny, and terribly engaging.

Volman presents each chapter with a general introduction to an idea. He then proceeds to give many examples with much, much commentary. At first, I was a little dissapointed with the book. This is the real stuff, too. No smoke and mirrors, laggy indicators and outlandish performance metrics. Read Volman's book, and turn a simple candlestick chart into an amazing drama of tug-o-war.

First impressions

Well I've never heard of Bob Volman or of Light Tower Publishing but after reading this book I can tell you that it's on par with what I've read from Al Brooks. The author has a very readable and insightful style which makes for strangely quick reading for this subject.

In some ways it strikes me as a sort of a price action short hand when you compare it to Al Brooks writings but nevertheless I think it very insightful and I plan on using some of the methods in trading equities.

I don't remember anything in the book that struck me as off or not matching my experience in the market. Every chapter rings true and fits the true reality of day trading like only a very small percentage of trading books do. I found myself nodding my head quite a few times in agreement with Bob's lucid explanations of many of the details of trading as a whole. My favorite quote is... "simple because the edge is not a thing that can surface by itself. It can only be obtained by the blood, sweat and tears of committing oneself to countless hours of studying markets, patterns, set ups and price action principles."

A Hideous Ruin that Should Have Been Combusted!

When publishers give a successful author a two- or three-book contract, it may sound like a fine idea. The publisher gains a lock on the writer's future manuscripts. The author's agent is delighted with the extra advance $$$. A win-win situation, right?

Not always! All too often, authors run out of creative steam, or their supportive editor leaves for another house. Rather than break their three-book contract, they fulfill the contract by submitting a piece of drivel, which--again all too often--the editor wearily accepts as part of the "divorce settlement." Which may explain why this unreadable mess got published.

John Collier has written "Fancies and Goodnights" and "His Monkey Wife" (both novels with solid 4-star-plus reviews on Amazon), along with an anthology of his writing. But this offering has no other reviews, which is usually a warning sign to readers. (For example, look at Amazon's listing for Kitty Dukakis' "Now You Know.")

Collier subtitles his effort "A Screenplay for the Mind," but totally ignores standard screenplay format. His opening sequence describes the fall of rebel angels from heaven as a comet that "transforms" itself in close-up into a series of bubbles filled with screaming faces. He replaces Milton's majestic verse with prose that's startling lackluster,along with gruesome descriptions that ramble on like the Marquis de Sade on mescaline. Though he sticks slavishly to Milton's outline, he erases Milton's eloquence at every turn.

As a final clue of the publisher's flop sweat, each page is adorned with a decorative border--the sure sign of a book designer painting rouge on the cheeks of a corpse.

A far better adaptation (and one that would work beautfully as a stage production) is Jean-Pierre Aubaine's "Paradise Lost in Four Acts" on Kindle. The transcript of a lost 17th- or 18th-century stage version that compared Satan with Oliver Cromwell and God with King Charles I. It features new characters like Cain and Abel, and endows Milton's demons and angels with recognizable personalities. It's a tragedy in the classic sense--and all in fluent iambic pentameter!

I can't say enough about this book. It gives me all kinds of FEELS. It's not only beautiful to flip through, but the author also provides really cool ideas to incorporate creative letter writing into your life!

Such a beautiful book. It's got everything from great anecdotes on writing letters, examples of letters from wonderful historical figures and a great take on modern vs old world ettiquete. there are also practical ways to make your own letters beautiful and special, shown in amazing projects, photo's and illustrations. There are even pages of super cute stickers which you can use on your own mail - Love it!

beautiful book!

I just got this book, and I love it so much!
It has very nice binding and cover, and the design is very cute. It was a lot bigger and had nicer paper than I expected.
inspiration and crafts, including care packages, envelope art, and more.
I already am a letter writer, But this could easily convince anyone to become one!
It also has cute post- themed stickers in the back. :-)
