About the Author
John McCormick is Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Politics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He was educated at Rhodes University (South Africa), the University of London, and Indiana University, and has been a visiting professor at Exeter University and the University of Sussex in Britain, and at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. He has lived in, traveled to, or undertaken research in nearly 40 countries in North and Central America, Europe, Southeast Africa, and Southeast Asia. Before completing his Ph.D. in political science, he worked in the public sector for two environmental interest groups and was a consultant for a number of specialized agencies of the United Nations, including FAO and the UN Environment Program. His teaching and research interests lie in comparative politics and public policy, with particular interests in environmental policy, British politics, and the politics of the European Union. His other publications include EUROPEAN UNION POLITICS (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), EUROPEANISM (Oxford University Press, 2010), and CONTEMPORARY BRITAIN (Palgrave Macmillan, 2nd edition, 2006).

Alan Downs, PhD, is a clinical psychologist practicing in Beverly Hills, California. The former CEO of Michael’s House Treatment Center, Downs now maintains a thriving private psychotherapy practice and an intensive outpatient addiction program.

Important but flawed

This book, particularly the first third (as other reviewers have noted) and the lengthy second edition add-on (Chapter 14) is a good starting point in understanding the origins and life-long impact of gay shame and how to overcome it. The author's three stage model for how gay men experience/deal with shame (overwhelm, compensation, authenticity) is useful and occasionally eye-opening as are his observations of how shame at each stage can be "foreclosed" on (ignored, buried, etc.) or healthfully resolved. The solid practical advice offered in the aforementioned Chapter 14 ("Skills for Living an Authentic Life), while being tailored to the gay male experience, could be of benefit to a much wider audience.

The main flaw with "The Velvet Rage" -- and it's a stunner -- is that it focuses almost exclusively on only one type of gay man, i.e. the urban, successful, materialistic, attractive, sexually promiscuous, well-traveled, fabulous "powergay". Life examples from the less-than-fabulous, i.e. rural/suburban gay men, unsuccessful or non-materialistic gay men, poor and middle-class gay men, ordinary-looking gay men, gay homebodies, senior gay men, disabled gay men, gay men of color, and many others are almost nowhere to be found, likely because these people appear largely absent from the author's social and professional circles (which he talks about a great deal, almost to the point of bragging at times). Though surely unintentional, this is a terrible oversight for a book that seeks to provide psychological support to a marginalized minority, and I suspect a fair number of gay men reading this book will feel further alienated in some way as a result.

I would still recommend "The Velvet Rage", as it is vitally important for gay men to understand the toxic shame that lies at the core of our personal and collective psychological shadows as well as acquire the psychological tools necessary to make positive changes in our lives. Just don't expect to see your life experiences adequately reflected if you're an average gay Joe.

Now where do I begin? Mallory Monroe I look forward to buying your books if I could only buy books from just one author it would be your books. Now I love how Big Daddy stepped up to the plate and went gangster. This is where Mick gets his bada$$ from.I am so in love with Trevor, and he loves his girl.
Ok, Mallory Monroe you opened up a can of worms, you know I want to know more about Angelo plus he is related to the Sinatras. I hope to see more of Trevor and Angelo in your books. The Gabrinis show their loyalty all the time. Well done you and your books rock. Now, I a going to reread this book,

Big Daddy and Brother and Nephews - WOW!

I can't remember the last time that I gave a Monroe book five stars even though I love all of them for the most part. I don't think that I've even given books with Tommy in it four stars but I need to review the last book about Tommy for it certainly deserves 5 stars. I was more interested in the review of Barkbad, who is an excellent reviewer. I loved this book, as I do any of the books with Reno, Tommy, Sal, Mick and Charles working together. I wish I had some uncles like them. Two problems: one, the book is too short even though full of action; and the second problem is how did they know about Trevor to pick him up in Las Vegas. I must have missed something, or were they looking for him at the places on the list? I think Reno and Tommy gansta as Mick and Sal, if not more. Now we find out that Charles also has it in him. I could say a lot about this book but don't want to spoil it. Can't wait for the next book.

Didn't miss a beat from the last couple of books!!!

I made the "good" mistake of checking late last night to see if "Papa Don't Play" was released and found that it was. What did that mean? That I had to have it and had to read it all in one night!!! Sitting here at work bleary eyed and still pumped from the book!!! To me, this is the "best" of the "family get togethers"!! Big Daddy is Big Daddy is Big Daddy!!!! Loved, loved, loved the story. Definitely a must read and is the best of Charles Sinatra!!! Story was well developed; sex scenes were just right; Jenay didn't have to get totally gangster; and Mr. Trevor was the man Charles needed him to be for his Carly. Again, loved, loved, loved the story!!!

Drawing is a very fragile, sensitive and powerful thing. Learning to draw is like starting to talk or to play an instrument. At first, it is about following a natural inclination, which, with disciplined cultivation, gradually undergoes both small and great progress and soon provides thrilling satisfaction. This path of knowledge becomes more and more fascinating and indispensable from the very moment it begins.

The human body—whether drawn from reality or invented, interpreted or imagined—is the main object of representations, and most artistic pursuits revolve around it. Regularly practicing drawing from real life is an endless and invigorating source of technical, compositional and formal inspiration, as well as a substantial element of art. And the human body is simultaneously a point of departure and point of arrival in such a process. Drawing a human figure is not so much a question of representation as it is of affinity with the body to be discovered; it is the response of the observer's body to that of the observed. And sight is not the only sense that is used; on its own it can easily be deceived when it is not acting as a vehicle for the accumulated experience of the other senses.

In this book you will not find instructions on how you should draw, but instead suggestions to begin drawing, and in particular, drawing the human body. It is aimed at those who, either because they attend drawing schools or because they feel attracted to drawing, want to set off down a path of knowledge; at those who already draw and are interested in discovering other points of view; and at those who teach drawing and are looking to find an integration of methods and new associations aimed at developing creative exploration.

I love the exercises and advice in this book. It is less of a how to book and wouldn't recommend it to people that one a book like that. However, this book did help me improve as a gesture drawing artist more than a lot of books that I have bought.

I've done all 5 levels of Pimsleur Mandarin...in retrospect, I would say levels 4 & 5 are actually a waste of time because the core foundation for the structures are in levels 1 through 3...after that it's just a matter of expanding vocabulary and Pimsleur is a very slow & inefficient way to expand vocabulary, there are much more faster ways of expanding vocabulary...AGAIN, Pimsleur Mandarin 1 through 3 are GREAT because they establish a core foundation for the structures, but levels 4 & 5 are a waste of time

I love the Pimsleur Method

I love the Pimsleur Method. The pacing of the lessons is good, like having a patient teacher. You develop listening acuity and work on your pronunciation. The whole course consists of listening and responding to voices on CD's. It is pretty much all oral, without books. Chinese is not easy, and I consider this an important supplement to my textbook work.

About the Author

CIXIN LIU is the most prolific and popular science fiction writer in the People's Republic of China. Liu is an eight-time winner of the Galaxy Award (the Chinese Hugo) and a winner of the Nebula Award. Prior to becoming a writer, he worked as an engineer in a power plant in Yangquan, Shanxi.

KEN LIU (translator) is a writer, lawyer, and computer programmer. His short story "The Paper Menagerie" was the first work of fiction ever to sweep the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards.

Opening salvo top notch Science Fiction series

First, this does not read like a translation. Ken Liu's translation of Cixin Liu's original Chinese language novel, "San ti" (2008) comes across seamlessly in the spare, translated English prose (though I cannot speak as to the authenticity of the translation, rather, just the style). Ken Liu sprinkles footnotes throughout the novel giving some useful background with regards to the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960's and 1970's, as well as background in math and physics.

The plot's political and scientific setting reminded me quite a bit of the writing of Gregory Benford, specifically, his novel Timescape. If I were to hazard a guess, if you like Benford's writing, you'll enjoy this novel. If you dislike Benford (he isn't everyone's cup of tea) you might want to pass on this. This is very much hard core, traditional science fiction. The backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution gives a memorable setting. Cixin Liu's personal experiences as a Chinese citizen (a young child - he was born in 1963) lends a degree of authenticity to that aspect of the novel.

Please, please, please read at least to the halfway point. Mr. Liu's plot slowly and steadily increases the pace. I loved the entire book, but one fellow reader was going "meh" until she read enough to tell me SHE wants to read the entire series now. If you find yourself thinking, "What's the big deal" just keep on going. This is a FUN read!

Note that this is the first of an original trilogy by the author, and I'm hooked. Try to avoid reviews that give too much of the plot away and just enjoy the work. Having never read this author before, I can see why he is one of the best selling science fiction writers in China. With this series I think he's about to widen his audience.

UPDATE: I read this book again and it has led me to preorder the next in the trilogy, The Dark Forest, which doesn't even come out in English until some time in 2015.

Science Fiction that Relies Heavily on Physics

Ye Wenjie, a young astrophysicist, suffered during the Chinese Cultural Revolution seeing her physicist father killed by an out of control group of young students. For awhile she buries herself in the forests as part of the Construction Corps, sawing down irreplaceable old trees. This experience like the Cultural Revolution convinces Ye Wenjie that humanity is not redeemable.

Her father's past as a famous physicist follows her into the Construction Corps. Before she is convicted, she's whisked away to a remote antenna station to serve as a technician. She intends to spend the rest of her life there, but events push her into the forefront of a new revolution, one to discredit science.

The book moves back and forth between Ye Wenjie's experiences and Wang Maio's. Wang is an applied physicist working on nanomaterial. He is drawn into the investigation of why so many famous scientists are committing suicide. At first he doesn't see how he fits the mold, but as the investigation progresses he gets caught up in the three body problem.

This is one of the best science fiction books I have ever read. The background relies heavily on physics which makes it fascinating. The author does an excellent job of weaving real concepts into his story. If you enjoy physics, this is a must read.

Wang and Ye are good characters. Wang grows as he faces the looming catastrophe. Ye is an enclosed woman who hides deep secrets. However, my favorite character was Da Shi. Unlike the scientists, he is a pragmatic observer who doesn't worry about theory. He looks at life. His common sense is one of the most refreshing parts of the book.

I highly recommend this book. It's the first book in a trilogy. The other two books are not available yet. If you like reading really good science fiction, you'll love this book.

Completely spectacular and engaging

As a longtime fan of science fiction, from pulpy schlock to the deep, literary works, I was quite curious to read this Chinese book that has become a bestseller, and see how it might differ. It doesn't, really, though it is completely and totally Chinese, from well footnoted history to the language used. I particularly appreciated the translator's hard work to maintain the Chinese spirit of the book while creating something understandable for Americans.

I found this book engaging from start to finish, and could not put it down. My only regret is that the second book is not yet available.
