Slow Start

I was intrigued by the title and concept but took a very long time to read this book.

The story took a very long time to develop, thus I had a hard time getting in to it. By the midpoint, it was fun to watch Lanigan's plan unfold. I guess four years in hiding allows one to think of everything.

The deals did have me thinking it was all too easy, and that's pretty much how things turned out.

Not one of my favorite Grisham novels. Didn't really pick up any emotional attachment to any of the characters and left with little to think about after the last page.

The Partner by John Grisham - entertaining but incredible

The Partner by John Grisham is entertaining, but unbelievable. It talks of a law partner who stole 90 million dollars from his law firm & it's client, feigns his death & runs away from a law firm that was about to boot him, from a miserable marriage, & from a bastard child. He ultimately got caught, but he had all the answers or strategies to overcome all the charges against him - theft, murder, divorce, etc. What a genius he is for plotting, planning & gathering all evidence against those who filed cases against him, even before the cases were filed against him. That is how the novel becomes unbelievable. It also had a lousy ending by the disappearance of the woman he loved & losing all the money he stole or made. He escapes all those pursuing him, but in the end he lost the girl who knew where his money was, who he believed loved him & did his bidding. Well, he couldn't have all the luck in the world. His good luck finally ran out. Merece!

Grisham's best work in years

I liked this one because it wasn't the standard Grisham legal fare in a different wrapper. The last few Grisham books, in my opinion, For those of you, like me, who thinks Grisham's books were getting a little stale with the same basic theme, "Small firm or entry-level big firm lawyer risks life and limb defending the little guy and taking on giant multi-national corporation, etc etc...," this novel might be worth your time.

Our main character in The Partner is, in true Grisham fashion, a young attorney slaving away trying to climb the ladder in his firm when a terrible and fiery car crash claims his life. Where this story varies from the typical Grisham is that the lead character is essentially a criminal himself, albeit one who designs an elaborate plan of stealing from high ranking, corrupt officials by out scheming the schemers - the story, for the most part, is not centered around legal maneuverings as much as it is about a lonely guy whose life lacks meaning trying to change things for the better. A failing marriage, a career he doesn't enjoy, corrupt bosses, financial hurdles. He finds meaning in an unconventional way and the story unfolds with "only in a Grisham" suspense and detail. Throw in a devoted love interest, unforeseen plot twists, and a dazzling ending, and you have the best Grisham effort in several years.

A Great Introduction to Social Media

Understanding who this book is for and who it is not for will really impact how you benefit from Likeable Social Media. First a few things of note:

1. The book is a quick and easy read with lots of excellent examples
2. There is an excellent introduction to social media for novices
3. The author clearly has mastery of the topic

So, if you are new to social media and are focused on end-user engagement then you will probably really benefit from this book.

However, if you are already using social media and really want to take your strategy to the next level you may want to rely on alternatives. What I was hoping to get from this book was specific strategies on the various social networks highlighted on the cover. Instead, the book was really focused on general social media strategies - listen to your customers, engage, etc. These are all important but anyone engaged in social media tends to understand why it is important. As someone that works in the B2B space I wanted something more tactile such as 'here are some great tools for following trends on twitter' or 'here are ways to get your tweets better noticed' or 'posting on Mondays on Linkedin is a bad idea'. Again, I still got something from the book but it wasn't really what I had hoped for.

The only area I would specifically highlight where the book let me down is the decision to highlight several social networks on the cover and in the title. This led me to believe there would be a discrete discussion on best practices for each network but most warrant passing mentions which left me a little disappointed.

Even useful for people who don't buy social media books anymore ...

In the past five years, I have probably bought more than 50 books about social media. In the past three months, I have hardly purchased one.

Instead, I now rely on a flood of blog posts, ebooks, white papers, and videos to keep me up to date on the latest news and insights about social media. So when I heard Dave was releasing a new second edition of his popular book - I was ready to buy it because I know and like him, but I didn't expect too much more. This book surprised me.

As a fellow believer and writer about the power of likeability in business, I am already inclined to like the underlying message of this book. But I also consider myself fairly critical of most social media "bible" style books. The sad truth is that most are bloated and dated. Likeable Social Media is just the opposite.

What sets this new edition apart is how actionable all the lessons and stories in the book actually are. Dave lives the experiences he talks about and tries all of his advice with his own companies and clients. There's a reason the first edition sold hundreds of thousands of copies and has been translated into 13 languages (so far).

In a space as fast moving as social media - you might be tempted, like me, to think that blog posts and online content is the only real way to stay up to date. This book might prove you wrong.

Overflowing with Durable Strategies

[[VIDEOID:d18a017223acc7600288a7e5b367d8bd]] Our initial assumption might be that a book about social media would become obsolete a month or two after publication, because the social media scene changes so frequently--new regulations, new offerings, and altered procedural steps. However, Dave Kerpen provides, quite clearly and convincingly, a mindset that will remain valid under any circumstances.

Starting out he says: "We all intuitively know what makes some people at cocktail parties interesting and enjoyable to interact with. Yet most companies have not figured out how to be likeable in the cocktail party known as social media." Sadly, "Many companies still act like the sales guy who won't shut up about his products, or someone who tries too hard to dazzle people, or the person who bores everybody to death talking without listening and not asking other people what they want to have a conversation about."

Which leads me to mention what I like most about the book: Kerpen's recurring theme that our purpose online is not to bombard people with our information and instant pitches--but instead to read, hear, and evaluate accurately what our contacts want to hear and need to hear.

A major plus for the book is Kerpen's eagerness to illustrate and document his assertions by referring to companies who are implementing his recommendations: Ann Taylor, Cisco, The Gap, and many others.

Have your highlighter handy when you read the Appendix: "A Refresher Guide to the Social Networks That Matter Most."

I'll put this book in a spot where I can refer to it frequently, and my prediction is you'll do the same thing. To borrow Kerpen's most-used word, this playbook is indeed "likeable."

About the Author
Ciby Joseph (FCA, FRM) is a veteran credit and finance professional with two decades of banking experience. His expertise includes credit risk analysis, credit risk management, financial analysis, relationship management, Basel regulations, investment management, derivatives and feasibility studies.  His banking exposure included banks such as CSB, HSBC and Lloyds TSB. University Rank holder (1989) and a recipient of a ‘Letter of Appreciation’ from HSBC (2003) for best credit risk analysis, Ciby headed the corporate credit risk of Lloyds TSB Middle East where he enjoyed corporate credit sanction authority. He is currently a Director at Crowe Horwath, UAE and a Partner of Transcend Investments & Credit Advisory, India. Ciby advises CEOs, CFOs and senior executives on optimum credit/borrowing strategies and participates in strategic assignments with respect to financing, debt syndication and risk management and conducts classes on credit risk. He has also contributed articles to various publications including Global Association of Risk Professionals, (GARP) USA.

“I have gone through the book and can confidently say that the book is highly useful for banking professionals and to anyone who want to know more about credit risk. The book discusses formulation of effective early warning indicators and covers the impact of business cycles, industry risks, entity level risks and provides best in the class financial risk analysis. The book explains how to make credit risk judgement and discusses about risk grades, PD, LGD and EAD. The book covers credit risks in project finance and working capital situations and critically evaluates Basel Accords and links Merton Model to the mainstream credit risk analysis. It also delves in credit portfolio risks and shows how credit contributed to 2008 Global Crisis. Each chapter is presented well with good illustrations. There are thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter as well as detailed case studies.”

An excellent book for bankers and lenders

The practical approach of ‘Advanced Credit Risk Analysis & Management’ is commendable. Many the credit risk books just covers ‘credit analysis’ and are very light on the ‘credit risk management’. ‘Advanced Credit Risk Analysis & Management’ covers both ‘credit risk analysis’ and ‘credit risk management’ comprehensively, from banking perspective. Besides, External Risk Analysis, Industry Risk Analysis, Company Risk Analysis, Financial Risk Analysis, the book also covers Credit Portfolio Risks, Credit Portfolio Risk Mitigation Techniques, Credit Risk Pricing, Credit Enhancement, Reasons for Credit Crisis, etc. One of the best chapters is the one that discusses financial analysis, from credit risk perspective. For example, the Cash From Operations (CFO) from lenders perspective is given in the book. While the CFO from equity/owners perspective is after interest and tax payments, the CFO from the perspective of a bank or lender is before interest and tax payments. Such subtle attention to detail makes the book highly useful. Another technique is the use of Free Cash Flows (FCF) for assessing the term loans. Strongly recommend the book.

Comprehensive and solid treatment of corporate credit analysis

A very interesting and informative book on corporate credit analysis, which stresses the importance of a comprehensive borrower analysis (external and internal factors, financial and descriptive facts, etc.) for a balanced and realistic judgment of the borrower's creditworthiness. Praiseworthy is i.a. the clear writing style and combination of theory with examples. I also liked the chapter on working capital management, however, in order to avoid potential misunderstanding of the notion of net working capital, which is used by finance people to denote different concepts, two different terms could be used like e.g. working capital needs or net working assets on the one hand and net working capital (as long term financing source of working capital needs) on the other hand. I wished a more in-depth discussion of the proper category of cash flow to be used as cash flow available for debt service (before or after capex, before or after working capital changes, and for 2 cases: when we have only historical financials and try to extract from them a CF that can be deemed "sustainable", i.e. likely to be repeated in similar amount in the future years, and when we have financial projections). All in all I find it a sound and recommendable book on credit analysis both for novice analysts (despite the word "advanced" in the title - given the clear language and explanations) and for seasoned bankers to refresh and enrich their knowledge (given the good quality of the topic treatment).

I enjoyed this book and am sure that my grandchildren will as well. I was surprised that it was smaller and less interactive then the companion book. "Egyptology, Search for the Tomb of Osiris" which everyone in my family loves. But this one is fun and full of understandable information.

Stunningly gorgeous & creative cakes at home

This cookbook is absolutely stunning and holds a huge variety of cake and frosting recipes, ranging from traditional to adventurous and exotic. Flipping through the pages, I gave up on bookmarking all the recipes I'd like to try, as at least half of these 150 cakes are now on my to-make list. The introduction section is filled with some fantastic tips and an explanation of each step in the baking/assembly process. It definitely should not be skipped. I love that Tessa walks the reader through all the different ways to decorate a cake, from super simple to complex piping and ombre. I also appreciated her explanation of the buttercream dam around cakes like the lemon layer cake - I've seen it before, but never considered how to do it in my own home.

There are a few flaws that hold this cookbook back from being perfect. The largest one is the fact that the ingredients list and the instructions are almost never on pages facing one another. Instead, there is a gorgeous photo next to the ingredients list, and usually another beautiful photo next to the directions. While these photos are drool-worthy, it is really difficult/annoying to flip back and forth between pages mid-baking. That's particularly true in this case, where the publisher elected to make this hardback a board book - it does not stay open well (and half the pages were stuck together when I received it, although I think I've unstuck them all now). Also, a lot of these recipes yield 3 or 4 layer 6 -or 8-inch cakes. Those are not very typical pan sizes (in the US) - the most common here seems to be the 9-inch. This means that either you'll need to adapt the recipe for your cake pans (which is doable: google Food52's post on baking pan conversions) or you'll need to go buy around $30-120 worth of new pans (depending on your brand of choice).

In the end, I do really adore this cookbook. Tessa goes beyond a standard "recipe book" here, with very precise and well-written language guiding the reader through the process of recreating her masterpieces in their own home. Whether you're new to baking or experienced, there will be plenty here to learn from and enjoy. I'm looking forward to making a lot of the whimsical cakes, like the blood orange thyme cake, the butterscotch bourbon cake, the blueberry pancake cake, and the coconut mojito cake. Also, although there are multiple recipes that require ingredients I don't usually keep around the house or require more time than I have during the week, I was able to throw together her oatmeal cookie cake tonight - it's easy to make with pantry/fridge ingredients and is absolutely delicious!

Edit 04.28.16. I've now made the blood orange thyme cake, the chocolate stout raspberry cake, and the birthday cake. My co-workers asked me if I was planning to enter a competition with these cakes because they taste and look so stunning. Buy this book immediately and start baking!

This one goes to 11!

I have a lot of cookbooks, most of which were purchased online (buying by faith? ;-) I've run across some disappointing books because of that, and vowed to wait for reviews on the "maybe" ones before I make a decision.

Quite honestly, the cover of this book didn't do it for me... I figured the author was playing off of a layering fad, and I'd end up with a cliched book with run-of-the-mill recipes. Been there; done that.

Well, I am now prepared to 1) thank all of the people who gave this book 5 stars, and 2) apologize to the author for almost slighting her book. This is as close to baking perfection as I could hope for. Only faults are that it could be longer (not the author's fault, simply me loving the book so much that more of a good thing is, well, a Good Thing) and the size pans the author uses (I have a bunch of 9" pans, and the author uses 6", 8" and 10"... again, not her fault, it simply means that I need more pans 8-)

"Layered" is well laid out: the author covers everything from her own family history to decorating/frosting tips that don't require much time or effort but look amazing. Visually, the book is a winner. Almost every recipe has a picture of both the entire cake and a cut slice. If there are specific techniques used on a cake, there are pictures of those too. By covering the decorating techniques at the start of the book the author has allowed the reader to say, "I can do that!" with confidence. The photos show thoughtful presentation, and highlight the flavors that make each cake unique.

The most amazing (and most appreciated) element of this book is the wide variety of flavors and flavor combinations used. The sections are divided into "Classic Cakes", "Chocolate Cakes", "Casual Cakes", Whimsical Cakes", "Adventurous Cakes" and "Holiday Cakes". "Classic" includes everything from Neapolitan to Brooklyn Blackout to a delightful twist on French Opera Cake. "Chocolate" covers the Ultimate Candy Bar Cake (OK, the author had me at that one) to Chocolate Matcha to Peanut Porter. "Casual" covers fruits, nuts and more (um) casual options, such as a Honey Apple Cake and a Sweet Tea Cake. "Whimsical" ranges from Rainbow Sprinkle to Strawberry Confetti Cakes. "Adventurous" features Raspberry Stout Cake and Pink Peppercorn Cherry Cake. "Holiday" boasts Winter Peppermint Cake, Pumpkin Pie Cake, and many others.

If ever there was a bake-my-way-through book, this is it. The author explains her flavors choices and combos, and I appreciate her effort to share her personality and thoughts. She has created a book of unique cakes, but done it in a way that makes them accessible and suitable for whatever event you may need a cake for.

Best Cake Cookbook Ever!

I love this cake cookbook in so many ways! The beautiful cakes are stunning to look at even if I never made one recipe (but I will try many!) The photography is really first rate! I also love the variety of cakes, many of which Tessa Huff has created herself. I love that she has a story for each one so this is more personal than a cut and dried cookbook. I appreciate that there are simple cakes too so anyone can dive in and bake one! I also appreciate all the help given in the beginning about tools and how to frost and cake and decorating tips. I love looking through it over and over, just a fabulous cake book!

Great Beginners Book

This book is very informative, well writen, and basic for new students of kabbalah and individuals interested in the subject. Kabbalah is a difficult topic to understand and learn. The author did a wonderful job by making it kabbalah easy to understand. I have read over 20 kabbalah books and would sometime have questions about the books I have read. I did not have that issue when i read this book, my questions were answered.

I also love the fact the author teaches you how to pronounce many of the jewish words. I will now pronounce the words correctly with the group of students I study kabbalah with.

As a kabbalah student I now understand the Tree of Life (Ten Sefirot) more from the book. I finally learned how to connect to it and the meaning about each sefirot.

I highly recommened this book, add it to your shopping cart right now. :)

Terrific

Not only does this book cover the basics of traditional Kabbalah, it explains meanings, has pronounciations, includes a few graphics and is nicely organized. It also delves slightly into the major branches of Judaism if one is unfamiliar, and shows how it's impossible to take the Torah away from Kabbalah and still find what you are seeking spiritually.

Torah and Kabbalah and Judaism go together. You can learn things from Kabbalah that might help you in your life, but you can't expect to live a lifestyle based on Jewish teachings if you're not living in accordance with Torah.

Great Insight

I bought this book for my mother a few months after she lost my sister to cancer. She couldent comprehend how this can happen to such a young person in life, especially her daughter. Naturally, she was really depressed and this book really helped her recover. She constantley talks about this book and how much it helps her understand why things like this happen in life. Her outlook on life has changed for the better. This is the best gift I could have given her.
