About the Author
Avinash Dixit is Emeritus John J.F. Sherrerd University Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he offered his popular freshman course in game theory. He is among the world’s leading economists, having made fundamental contributions in several major fields as well as in game theory. He is the author of many books, including Dixit/Nalebuff: Thinking Strategically (Norton, 1991), Dixit/Pindyck: Investment Under Uncertainty (Princeton University Press, 1994), and Dixit/Nalebuff: The Art of Strategy (Norton, 2009).

Barry J. Nalebuff is the Milton Steinbach Professor at the Yale School of Management. Nalebuff applies game theory to business strategy and is the co-founder of one of America's fastest-growing companies, Honest Tea.

One of the best introductory works on strategy

Thinking Strategically is one of the first books I ever read on strategy. Since I read it it has changed my perspective and way of thinking and analyzing all sorts of problems from business to personal life. The book in a sense has become a manual of problem assessment in my life I have used its concepts in situations where I have to predict rivals moves in business, work and personal life. Also its concepts help you in situations where you have to bargain or assess opportunities and disadvantages in purchases, investments or even in choosing your partner. Thinking Strategically is a rational approach to decision making that can reduce the stress and anxiety of uncertainty and will give you better control in life. In the end outcomes in life are statistical and through good strategy you have a more dominant position reducing risk and loses.

The only thing missing in the book might be Harvard's strategy expert Michael Porter, who is one of the most important proponents on business strategy with his theory of the 5 forces. However Porter's approach is eminently business oriented and it doesn't have much applicability in other types of non-business scenarios.

Thinking Strategically is more a general overview of the most fundamental concepts and theories in strategy and definitely a must read for those interested in understanding more about decision making. Its power for the general public is the easy to understand reading of complex mathematical and economic concepts.

Fun Read - Good Book

So I recently moved from Banking industry into consulting. I keep hearing strategy this, Strategy consulting and it just confused me as to how is it different from plan. So I went online and looked this book up, an man is it interesting. It is a good book. So let me make few key points here:

- It is fun to read from page one (This is important to note as I am not a reader, i am a watcher, i love to watch movies)

- It is laid out well, I was infact so impressed that i started making notes as a I read it, and i suggest to get most out of this book make notes.

- Will this help you think strategically, umm I am not so sure, however, it will help you analyze what you read in the newspapers on a daily basis. Be it Budget talks in the white house and how one side is pushing the other over, how they strategize, you can actually guess and understand more than what you read at the surface in the news papers. And trust me it is a cool nerdy feeling. So in a way it helps you look into how people respond and build your best response. So over time it will help train you to become a strong strategist, but don't expect to be running Bain and company by the end of this book.

- Finally Price - you cant beat it, so much knowledge for so little, its like the arm chair economist, you should buy that too, if you like fun reads like this.

"Strategic thinking is the art of outdoing an adversary, knowing that the adversary is trying to do the same to you." So begins Dixit and Nalebuff's guide to gaining the competitive edge. They intend this book for "businessmen," politicians, football coaches and parents--anyone who contends with an adversary. Their goal is to teach readers about game theory, the "emerging science of strategy," without jargon or mathematical formulas.

They begin with "ten tales of strategy" from a variety of settings. Using examples from sports, politics, history--and even a children's fairy tale--the authors illustrate the pervasive need for strategic thinking. Successive chapters present aspects of strategic thinking and explore their variations. Initial chapters address anticipating a rival's response, seeing through a rival's strategy, and adopting the best strategy in the cooperate-or-betray game of the Prisoner's Dilemma.

The authors then explore the art of making strategic moves, actions "...designed to alter the beliefs and actions of others in a direction favorable to yourself." We learn about unconditional moves as well as threats, promises, warnings and assurances. Succeeding chapters explain the value of making credible commitments, of sometimes being unpredictable, and of "playing chicken" with brinksmanship. We learn the relative strengths of cooperative and competitive strategies and how to choose between them. The final three strategy chapters explore the possible moves when adversaries are voting to make decisions and how to make the best use of bargaining positions and incentives.

There are numerous brief examples throughout the book. Each strategy chapter closes with a more elaborate case study to be analyzed using the chapter's principles. The final chapter is a collection of 23 fresh case studies that serve as a "comprehensive final exam" by drawing on strategies from all chapters. The authors achieve their goal of a readable, nontechnical introduction. They even lead us into some minimally-painful use of decision trees and contingency tables.

I recommend the book as a serious introduction to strategic thinking. Well, perhaps the occasional cartoon it includes disqualifies it as "serious." But its lessons prepare readers to act strategically in serious, real-life situations. Reading it is a good move.

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution , the biosphere has been continuously polluted with a myriad of contaminants that urgently need global attention. In this perspective, most of the genera of the plant family Brassicaceae (Crucifereae or the mustard family) are significant parts of the plants- and associated microbes-based strategies adopted for the cleanup of varied contaminants from environmental compartments. Important genera such as Alyssum, Arabidopsis, Brassica and Thlaspi from Brassicaceae which, besides acting as attractive genetic models, well-represent the metal hyperaccumulation among approximately 0.2% of all angiosperms and thus, play a key role in the phytoremediation technology. Informative Introduction

This book helps explain a lot of the basics of how extrusion dies are optimized for superior cooling and flow performance. It gets into a good level of detail but is not written with too high a required knowledge going into the book. It is useful for any entry level engineer or tool designer in understanding more about the process. I purchased this as I work in the plastics industry and desired to get a more in depth mathematical understanding in order to solve some real extrusion problems, such as warping during cool.

The book starts with basics of material properties and how they interact with extrusion. It then goes into basic flow equations, not much more than you probably got in college, but then expands it to topics such as Melt Fracture. Then it goes into the CFD, or flow field, part when they talk about optimizing shape of the die to improve the velocity profile.

The meat of this book is in its discussion of various die designs for monoextrusion and coextrusion of thermoplastics and elastomers. There is then a short 10 page section on heating of the die.

The ending is on basics of calibration, operation, mechanical design, and maintaining of dies.

Suitable for everyone

This book was recommended during my MBA at LUISS in Rome as the best possible reference for those who are interested in developing a thorough knowledge about Innovation and Corporate Strategy. It provides a complete overview on the subject, starting from which kind of company is more likely to innovate, how to overcome market uncertainties, what kind of human resources and network relationships you need to use, how to finance innovation and so on. The explanation is so fluid and the terminology so plain it could be easily read in a couple of days. Some useful case studies are also included. The only missing element is the strong emphasis on the IT sector. It would have been absolutely useful to include more cases on manifacturing and services companies. However, it should be considered one of the best available textbooks for Postgraduate students.

A multi-dimensional framework "for all seasons"

In this second edition, Allan Afuah develops in much greater depth many of the same concepts introduced in the previous edition (1998) but changed some of the terminology and rearranged the sequence of material while separating strategy issues from those concerning implementation and adding an entirely new chapter, "The Internet: A Case in Technological Change" (Chapter 16). He also incorporates many of the readers' reactions and suggestions generated by the earlier edition. However, he retains the same seven themes that "underpin the synthesis and intregrative framework" that can allow students of innovation "to get their minds around this increasingly important field - a framework that allows them to build on and make cause-and-effect predictions." That is again his goal in this second edition and he achieves it fully.

Opinions are mixed as to whether or not it is possible to "manage" innovation. Perhaps some of the disagreements have to do with how manage is defined. Afuah seems to be among those (I among them) who believe that it is possible to establish and then manage an environment in which innovation can flourish, and it is also possible to manage the adoption, production, marketing, sales, and distribution of products that result from innovative thinking. In this context, I am reminded of what a French romantic poet (I think it was Baudelaire) said when asked how he wrote a poem. "First, I draw a bird cage, and leave the door open. Then I wait and wait and wait. Once in a while, a bird flies through the door. Then I erase the cage."

In his introduction, Afuah poses a series of 17 questions and then answers them, devoting a separate chapter to each. Following Chapter 1, "Introduction and Overview," he organizes his material within four Parts:

I (Chapters 2-4): Fundamentals (e.g. models of innovation)
II (Chapters 5-10): Strategizing (e.g. strategies for sustaining profits)
III (Chapters 11 and 12): Implementation (e.g. of the decision to adopt)
IV (Chapters 13-17): Globalization (e.g. the role of national governments)

Several books are invaluable sources concerning brainstorming, idea generation, etc. (notably Tom Kelley's The Idea of Innovation and The Ten Faces of Innovation) and Afluah fully understands and appreciates that process. However, the seven themes that he develops throughout his narrative (discussed later in this review) indicate that his perspective includes but is not limited to such activities. He thinks in terms of an entire enterprise, one whose strategy is based on several key factors that Afluah examines in Part II. When explaining how to create a foundation for execution, Jeanne Ross Peter Weill, and David Robertson observe: "The focus needs to be higher - on [in italics] enterprise architecture [end italics], the organizing logic for core business processes and IT infrastructure reflecting the standardization and integration of a company's operating model...[Therefore] enterprise architecture boils down to these two concepts: business process integration and business process standardization. In short, enterprise architecture is not an IT issue - it's a business issue." This is also Afluah's perspective throughout his brilliant book.

With regard to the aforementioned themes, they are:

1. There is "no better practice than good theory."
2. Competitive advantage is gained and sustained through innovation.
3. Innovation is not limited to high technology.
4. Innovation usually means change and requires cross-functional involvement
5. Both strategy and its implementation are critical to successful applications of innovation.
6. Innovation entails dealing with new knowledge.
7. In its imperative to understand to apply it; once learned, it must be practiced.

Readers will also appreciate the two appendices, "Dominant Designs and Standards" and "Some Organizational Designs." They and Afuah's thoughtful responses to the 17 questions during which he develops the seven themes will provide a wealth of information and counsel but presumably he would be the first to agree that it would be a fool's errand for any of his readers to attempt to implement all of his recommendations. Difficult, but a real treasure

This second volume of the Laws of the Icelanders has now become available nearly a quarter of a century after Volume I appeared. Sadly, that first volume has now gone out print, although from taking with the publisher, I understand a new edition of Volume I will soon be ready.

Great news, because together these are tremendously important documents. They not only give wonderful insights into the medieval world, but also hold the seeds of much of English law that in turn would find its way into the quirky American legal system. If you believe legalistic thinking is a kind of insanity that often goes against common sense, you'll find lots of proof in these "Viking" laws, that seem to cover every possible worry of medieval man -- how a whale is to be divided, the punishment for composing unflattering poems, the fine for kissing someone else's wife, how murder is to be reported, and so forth. Eighty-year-olds slipping off and marrying without the permission of their kids was apparently a big enough problem that a special set of laws had to be made to cover that situation. There was one fine for a poke in the nose, another for a kick in the testicles.

Being a collection of laws, however, they're not easy reading and probably will need to be taken in small doses of a page or two at a time and thought about -- much like Donne's poetry, say. Many of the laws require some real untangling to be understood at all, while the meaning of others has likely been lost forever.

Just the same, the translators have done a super job of making the laws accessible. They've grouped them logically and provide plenty of footnotes for assistance, along with a dictionary of technical terms and a glossary with the original Icelandic vocabulary.

Obviously these are scholarly works meant for a specialized audience, but that audience should certainly extend to everyone in the legal profession and everyone with an interest in the Middle Ages, especially those who would hope to fully understand the Icelandic Sagas. Actually, anyone who likes to read should enjoy skimming these volumes. Even if you can't afford to own them yourself, you should encourage your local library to have them. They are priceless.

A treasure trove of interesting information

Like all legal codes, this is not an easy read. This is made all the more difficult by the attempts to leave some of the technical vocabulary intact in the manuscript. One often has to get the sense of how everything fits together to understand a given regulation (for example, the idea that one can have meadowland rights on someone else's property). At the same time, of course, leaving this technical side intact makes the book more useful.

This being said the book is an amazing treasure-trove of information. There are sections in this volume which deal with dog bites, tame polar bears, divorce, remarriage, and torts involving interfering with a marriage. The Icelanders had some sense of something like community property though it was not evenly divided (2/3rds of the community property belonged to the husband).

Moreover the sense of legal protections for vulnerable persons was very different in this system. For example, an individual has a right to search for stolen property on the land or in the houses of others with a band of up to 30 men, none of whom are free to refuse to help, but a search area must be contiguous, so all farms in between two suspects must also be searched. This seems to help reducing abuse by inconveniencing those who are legally required to render judgement (clearing verdicts done by a panel of five neighbors). Similarly, upon getting married, a man had to pay a "bride-price" to his bride, and if they divorced, she was entitled to keep this money. This was her money and not part of the community property.

Understanding how different societies solved social problems is immensely interesting in its own right but it is also important. By looking to how other cultures looked at issues, we are better prepared to look at the problems in our own time with a new set of eyes. This can be of help in understanding the social diseases of our day.

I'd highly recommend this work.
