About the Author
Nicole Burnham is originally from Colorado, but as the daughter of an Army dentist, grew up travelling the world. After obtaining both a law degree and a master's in political science, she settled into what she thought would be a long, secure career as an attorney. That long, secure career lasted only a year. Faced with a lifetime of writing stale legal briefs, Nicole soon decided she was better suited to the adventure of writing romance. Nicole now resides in Massachusetts. The Knight's Kiss

I love this series of books. The back story was great and I loved that Isabella got her HEA. Nick was just perfect for her since he lived the history that she loved so much. The interactions between them were so easy that you want them just to stop fighting their feelings.

It was also great to catch up with the other characters from the first two books. Don't miss this story.

A charming fairy-tale type story

Nick Black has been around for centuries. He had been a knight during medieval times, in the small country of San Rimini. He had been cursed by a witch when he refused to help a young boy in need because he thought his mission for the King far more important then a peasant child's life. His curse left him to wander the Earth, never aging until he learned the importance of sacrificing for the benefit of another.

Princess Isabella of San Rimini has a pet project she needs help with. Her mother's dream, before her death, had been to have a museum display of San Rimini historical artifacts. Isabella intends to see her mother's dream realized and needs Nick's help. For he is the expert on San Rimini history, though none know the real reason for that... that he had lived it all. She comes to the US where he lives the life of a recluse, except for a couple close associates, to hopefully hire Nick to work on her project.

Nick refuses at first, fearing the attention and publicity from the media. He can't let anyone discover his secret and turn him into a scientific experiment. When Isabella agrees to all of his conditions, and agrees to give him full access to all artifacts, he can't refuse. He had spent the past 800 years collecting documents and artifacts, hoping to find something... anything... that will lead him to the witch who cursed him, and a way to break it.

What Nick never counted on was falling in love with Isabella and she with him. Now he has even more to fear - how would she react to finding out about his curse? Does he stay with her and risk her hatred bound to develop once she realizes the full impact of his curse? Or does he leave San Rimini and Isabella to protect his secret? Will his curse ever be broken so he can finally find peace?

Ms. Burnham continues her San Rimini Royal Family miniseries with this pleasant tale. She shows her talent for spinning a sweet story, full of love and joy that many people live to experience. She expands a little more on the family in this book, and the reader gets the chance to visit with characters from past books, and some who likely will be getting their own story before too long.

Nick and Isabella are a good couple and Nick's turmoil is believable. He may have started out as a man committed to one thing, his King, but that changes as through time he learns he must learn to care more about other things, and people, if he ever hopes to break the curse and live a normal life. In a way, Isabella is like him - dedicated to her country, family, and causes, above all else, even herself. She had forgotten how to just live, experiencing life for the sheer joy it brings. Together, they learn to live again, experiencing happiness, as they had never really known it before.

This book has everything lovers of romance novels want. There is a fine story fully realized, plenty of charming and endearing characters, a little bit of adventure, a touch of fantasy, and of course the key elements - love and romance. This book was this reviewer's first read by Nicole Burnham, but it intrigued her enough to want to seek out the rest of the series as well.

Marvelous paranormal! Very highly recommended

In 1163 a knight entrusted with the King's business, Domenico di Bollazio Black stood at a turning point that would transform his life. Rather than going back to save a child, he decides to keep to his schedule and fulfill his mission for the King. But when the boy's red headed mother stops him, she leaves him with a curse of immortality. The curse can only be broken if he can learn to sacrifice himself for others. In the current century he calls himself Nick Black, living the life of an eccentric hermit and searching for records of the woman who could free him of his eternal life.
Princess Isabella diTalora seeks Nick out personally, having heard remarkable recommendations from other historicists in the field. Little does she suspect he was born in San Rimini and has walked the same halls as she, albeit 800 years ago. Isabella intends to finish a historical project begun by her mother, and she needs Nick's help cataloging a huge collection of artifacts and historical documents currently gathering dust in the royal palace. Fulfilling such a request affords Nick the opportunity to examine hereto unrecorded documents that might hold the clues to his quest. It also presents his greatest challenge yet: not acting on his attraction to the princess.
Readers who enjoy a touch of the paranormal will treasure Nicole Burnham's THE KNIGHT'S KISS. In this mesmerizing novel, Burnham demonstrates a remarkable gift for transforming the improbably into something absolutely believable. Nick's understanding of Isabella's need for anonymity provides the perfect date, and an amusing outcome. As their relationship develops, it is at once tender and endearing. Readers will delight in this paranormal, even as it takes a sharp departure from the glitter casinos of Burnham's previous work. One can only wonder at what might spring from this marvelously creative author next! THE KNIGHT'S KISS comes very highly recommended.

Simply Indispensable.

The definitive resource and price guide reference for the entire comic book collecting industry. Every dealer on the planet has one, and uses it as a benchmark for pricing. And even when they sell books at a different price, they always do so in reference to The Guide price (i.e. "Above Guide, " or "Below Guide.").

The values in this book are not guesstimates. They are based upon a wide survey of North American comic book dealers and collectors. At the very least this book tells you which books are more in demand and which are not.

The only criticism I have is that 3rd party graded books definitely command a price premium in the market over so-called "raw" books. The Guide should make an effort to reflect this somehow in their valuation system. Either designate that the prices are for certified grades, or raw, books.

I also believe that eBay sales of standard books should also form the guide pricing. It does account for auction sale prices, but mostly of key books.

Additionally, the people who buy the hard copy should also be given access to a digital copy.

Otherwise, this is the best Comic Book collecting reference you can own. Highly recommended.

The authority on prices ever since its inception

Ah, the Overstreet price guide. Good gosh how long have I been purchasing this tome...

Well, actually, it's been a few years, but before then it was every year since it first came out (yeah, I'm that old).

Beyond the meat and potatoes of the fully-loaded pricing by grade for every comic book known to man (and most unknown as well), the articles and market insights are well worth the time invested.

And, as always, a treasure trove of covers to look at, old and new. This book keeps getting better every year.

Now, when am I going to pull down all those white boxes and get started revaluing my collection?

Great Reference Guide

I used to buy this book every year, and the anticipation I felt was akin to when I was a kid and looking forward to the new season of Saturday morning cartoons. Years ago, I had given my old editions to thrift shops, as I drifted away from comic fandom. And whenever I wanted to find a value of a book, I'd just do an online search - it seemed so much easier and convenient - after all, it seemed the price guide kept getting heavier and the font size smaller. But now I wish I had kept those earlier editions. I had forgotten what I had been missing.

Not only is it more convenient to just flip through pages, but I can easily view key issue notations and individual issue values for each title at a glance. But the Overstreet Price Guide is much more than that. It has articles about comic book history, not just for collecting and valuation, but also the cultural aspects of the books. It is really a connection between the individual collector and the hobby at large.

Recently, especially with all the movies based on comic books, I've slowly been "returning to the fold." Buying this edition, at least for the moment, has accelerated this interest. I don't know, and actually doubt I'll reach the same level of interest in comics I had years ago, but the Overstreet Guide has certainly brought back memories and is doing its part, along with fandom related tv shows, and local conventions to re-acquaint me with the hobby.

Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was born in France and came to live in the United States at the age of 24. No one is left unfed by the fruits of this Perennial Classic!

A timeless classic filled with timeless ideas and ideals.

I think Merton writes for all of us in this book. He leads us, he uplifts us, he motivates us, he accuses us, he challenges us, and he comforts us. He exudes such a solid spirituality.

I read this for the first time in the mid 70's, riding the #7 IRT subway to and from Manhattan every day. I look back at how Merton (or maybe it was not him) had the ability to captivate me in that environment. He just seemed to draw me in, amidst all the noise and heat of summer (there was no air-conditioning). I still remember the experience--a challenging, transforming, spiritual experience.

Part of my memory of this was that I encountered Truth--It was alive!--though I could not always describe how that was so. That memory has always allured me to reread this book. I did--a number of times. A reread of this is a completely new experience! I recently read him again, first the book--next as an audio book. I think the latter experience was even more impressive. Hearing his words has a remarkable effect. I don't think Merton (or Truth) leaves anybody unchanged!

You will never consider this a waste of time!

Great Spiritual Book indeed

Great Spiritual Book indeed! The author takes you from the basics of catholic spirituality (and even there he takes you into its profound spiritual meaning) to the depths of Catholic faith delving into a wide spectrum of stepping stone in depth journey that tackles different subjects with indepth of insight and modern spirituality such as the love of God and love of neighbour, the virtues such as faith and hope, discernment, right intention, prayer, sincerity and humility, God ''s will, vocations, mercy, recollection and more. A valuable spiritual book and great spiritual author.

Thomas Merton has had a profound impact on my life. While not Catholic [Episcopal, and fairly orthodox at that] he is very inspiring in the way in which to be totally surrendered to a good heavenly Father. A LifeSaver for New Parents: How to Get Your Baby to Sleep Thru the Night

We have 5 month old twins and were ragged from feeding them every few hours around the clock until a mom suggested this book. Great advice and age appropriate schedules to train your baby to sleep thru the night. I only wish we'd discovered it sooner!

Miracle worker!

All my sisters recommended this book and at first I was skeptical....but as a brand new Mum all I can say is WOW....it works and don't hesitate. I followed the schedule and my baby girl was sleeping through the night within on week. (At 2 months of age). I am all for "demand feeding" at newborn age (the first 2 months) but beyond that I needed to get baby into a routine and encourage longer sleep patterns. The advice in this book was useful, straightforward and had lots of good examples/case studies to learn from. My baby is now 5 months old and sleeps from 7pm to 6am every night.....it is heaven!

An Excellent Resource for the new sleep-deprived parents!

This is an excellent read, and resource for those of us, who've been sleep-deprived as a result of having our first, and sometimes second and third child. My husband and I read it, got on the same page, and it didn't take but a couple of weeks to get our baby to fall asleep without having to rock/hold her for hours at a time. It's amazing!

Fantastic "guy" Bible.

This is a great new Bible recently released by Zondervan. I've taken occasion to really look it over and I am impressed.
The pages of this Bible are filled with one line study portions. There are several recurring themes for added reading that allow a young guy to explore the meanings of the Holy writ. They're short enough to pay attention to and rich enough to add something meaningful to the text.
There are dozens and dozens of colorful pages with tips and ideas for living the Christian Life. How about ideas for a date or team projects, there here with enough flair to grab a boy's attention and help him complete "steps" of life that will honor God.
I really pay attention to bindings and overall book construction, and Revolution: The Bible for Teen Guys is well put together. This Bible even feels like a guy's Bible. It is stout and has nice proportions. The hardback version has a cool cover design and is dark with just a tiny bit of color. The Leather addition has a rich leather or leather like appearance and feel. Supple would be a great word to describe the black leather cover.
If your looking for a Bible that a teen guy can feel pretty good about carrying around in front of his friends, this one will work. If you're looking for a guide to help spur a young man on to greater maturity in Christ, this is still your book. I would feel very comfortable giving this Bible to guys 12-16, and wouldn't be a bit surprised if the older guys liked it too ( I know I do). This is just one high quality offering in the New International Version.

OUTSTANDING!

Wow! This is a fabulous bible! I highly recommend it for young men. We just bought this for our oldest son, who is 12 going on 30!..=) He reads it everyday, and I don't have to ask him to! He told me the other day that it is the first bible he has had that is fun to read, and that makes sense to him- he said it's like they took all his questions and tailored his bible specifically for him! Definately well worth the money- this is a great version!

About the Author

Steve Niles is a film producer and writer of screenplays including the classic 30 Days of Night which is being made into a film produced by the legendary Sam Raimi for release in October 2007. Named by Fangoria magazine as one of the "13 rising talents who promise to terrify us for the next 25 years" is also penning the upcoming films Bigfoot (which he co-created with rocker Rob Zombie) and The Lurkers. He lives in Los Angeles.

Not Enough Meat In This First Volume

October Faction Volume 1 was a study of contrasts for me. I both liked and didn't like it; weirdly enough, it wasn't that part was good and part was bad. Rather, that I liked and disliked the same exact thing at the same time. The art was interesting but I didn't love it; the story never had an arc and meandered everywhere but I didn't get annoyed; the characters seemed really distinct and yet they weren't; the monsters felt fresh but none were. I'm not sure how to make sense of it other than to say that by the end, it just didn't pull me in - the promise of the first few pages never materialized for me by the end.

Story: Frederick Allan is a former monster hunter, now retired and lecturing at the local university. His kids have grown up and want to follow in their father's footsteps - but he's not quite sure he likes that idea. Compounding things, his former partner contracted werewolf disease and fights it every day. When his wife seeks to get his attention and lets loose an old enemy, things get fairly crazy for the everyone.

I wish the story had focused on one member of the family. We're given small bits of each - the son and the ghosts he sees on a schoolmate, the daughter wanting more excitement, the wife feeling neglected by her once exciting husband, and the put-upon professor. We get little glimpses but never anything more from the characters. I kept expecting to see a poignant moment but it all seemed to be vignettes that never really fleshed anyone out.

I enjoyed the art - it was suitably creepy with a monochromatic tonality and rough, unfinished quality. The watercolor-like style has a dreamy, painterly feel that suits the story perfectly. Oddly enough, like the story, the art never defines the characters and so they look as sketchy as they are written. Perhaps another reason I never really felt I 'knew' any of the characters.

There's not really a story arc here and some events intertwine but it felt fairly random. Perhaps things will coalesce more in future issues. But for me, I really wanted something more than we see in this first volume. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided buy the publisher.

Be Patient - This Builds Quickly to a Satisfying Conclusion

At the outset we find ourselves in a dark, gloomy classroom as Frederick Allan, retired monster hunter, lectures about terrible things that go bump in the night. Humorless and grim, this tale feels like it's going to be dark, angsty, heavy going. But wait.

Bit by bit we are introduced to the rest of the Allan clan, we meet the supporting cast, we are introduced to a range of villains, we answer a few questions, we add a bunch of new questions, and by the end the stage is set for a very entertaining family saga.

Frederick turns out to have a very dry and subtle sense of humor. His wife Deloris, who is introduced as a sour malcontent, turns out to be a much more interesting piece of work. The son is nervier and the daughter is less angsty, and both are funnier and braver, than one first suspects. Something that starts out as just some Gothic version of Orange County turns into a much more interesting and engaging ensemble performance. (Heck, the set piece in which Frederick takes the kids out to bury their first body is worth the price of admission on its own.)

This is all held together by very solid art work. Sure it's gloomy and grey and dark, but Damien Worm, (best name, ever), mixes it up. There are full page detailed scene and setting panels, kaw-pow action bits, and a lot of "family portrait" type group shots. There is a lot of attention to detail, but those detailed panels are mixed in with more impressionistic drawings. And, this is important, the characters are usually very expressive and natural looking. They are drawn to look "right" in every panel and their characters and thoughts and emotions are evident. There is nothing cartoony or careless about the figures. When they are then placed in detailed and evocative environments the effect is convincing and compelling.

So, the upshot is that you get good characters, a good story, snappy dialogue and a lot of things that are really interesting to look at. That does it for me.

Is this an Addams Family for the new millennium?

The October Faction is a graphic novel about Frederick Allan, a monster hunter who is now retired. His children want to follow in his footsteps ... an idea that Frederick doesn't care for. The daughter, Vivian, proves herself more than capable, though I'm still sure why the son/brother has any interest in hunting monsters.

In a story that centers around a family of monster hunters, it's certainly no surprise that there are some evil characters around but there is nothing outrageously monstrous (for a horror story), though 'Dante' makes for an interesting and intriguing semi-villain.

I'd initially thought that this book was going to be about the children, beginning to take over the business from their father, but it segued to the father not quite giving it up, then to the a man who is shot by Frederick in the parlor, buried, and rises again in the presence of his sister.

I couldn't quite get a handle on the story, but I think that's because there isn't one yet. We're still in the phase of discovering who the characters are. This might be fine in some cases, particularly in a comic book series that will be ongoing, but without at least a hint of where these characters are headed, it just rambles.

The artwork is quite unique. It is sharp, angular, and just enough off-kilter as to suggest a world that is also off-kilter. The coloring is beautiful. It is dark and rich with patterns. For me, this art was the saving grace of a book that meandered around a story. However, even with the art, there were strange issues. For some odd reason, an occasional panel would be blurry. It was too often to be anything other than planned, but because the art is unique enough (and beautiful) as it is, we really didn't need this distraction just to have the art make a statement.

This is an odd book, in so many ways. I liked the art and thought that the characters showed some promise, but the story rambled so much that there was nothing to sink my teeth in to. This is one of those books that if I should see the next volume, I may pick it up, I may not, but if I don't read the next volume, I don't think I'll be missing anything.

Looking for a good book? The October Faction is a dark graphic novel about a family of monster hunters, but nothing much happens in this volume.
