More attractive than practical

I will say that the models are beautiful and well photographed. However, the calendar pages are dark brown with yellow characters, which makes them hard to read (a yellow layout with brown characters would have been much better). If you appreciate nude photography, this work is fine, but if you want a practical calendar, you may want to look elsewhere.

I like it however

I like it however, I noticed that it didn't come wrapped in plastic for protection. Because of this, there were a lot of finger indentations throughout the entire calendar. Highly disappointed.

Is this guy considered "Alpha" or just plain rude?

I thought the book description of billionaire Gaelan's coldness towards his six year old daughter and his inability to feel love for her must have been exaggerated. But then I read the book, and it is quite accurate. Not only that, but he keeps her virtually imprisoned in their house, home schooled and not allowed to have friends visit. The description did not mention his rudeness and arrogance, which he possesses in abundance.

He hires Chloe sight unseen to be his daughter's in-home tutor. Upon meeting her, he immediately fires her and declares, "I don't have to explain myself to you. I've met you, and I don't want you here. End of story." So what was Chloe's transgression? She's too young and too pretty; he had thought he was hiring a grandmotherly type. Shortly after, he hires her back, then practically attacks her with a kiss, and then SHE threatens to quit. She doesn't, of course, and the reason provided is that she feels such a strong bond with the child she had met mere hours before.

They spat and spar as they gradually learn to trust each other, and Chloe learns the reason for Gaelan's attitude towards his daughter. It is quite dramatic, as expected, but it's an absurd excuse for mistreatment of a young child. We know how the book will end, because we've seen it all: walls will come down, misunderstandings will be understood, obstacles will be obliterated, etc.

About 1/3 of the way through the book, Gaelan begins his transition to Completely Different Person and decides that he's in love with Chloe and that it might be a good idea to stop forcing his daughter to address him by his first name.

Soon after, Sophia and Chloe are in a car crash. Chloe is fine, but little Sophia is hospitalized with a concussion. When Gaelan learns of the crash, he seems more concerned over Chloe's welfare than his daughter's. I guess this is supposed to be romantic. Rather grossly, Gaelan's and Chloe's first romantic encounter occurs in the honeymoon suite of a hotel (yup, the only one available) while Sophia lies in the hospital. They express their deep concern over Sophia through sex and also consider partaking in the room's available champagne and hot tub. Never addressed is the fact they left Sophia in the hospital overnight alone! Also not addressed is the fact that Chloe was responsible for the accident by accepting a ride in a stranger's car and not properly restraining Sophia. I'm not even a parent, and that bothered me!

The book features a few Big Misunderstandings, quick forgiveness, a couple of Big Twists (that actually surprised me), and two minor villains. The author attempted to wrap everything up with a bow in a manner that would test even the most tolerant reader's credulity.

My review probably sounds like it should be no more than 2 stars. I'm trying to be fair with the 3, because the author's writing itself is not bad, and some people might actually enjoy this book. I happened to dislike the lead characters, and that feeling was intensified because I felt that the author glossed over or ignored some pretty horrible behavior and expected us to like the characters as soon as she waved her magic wand.

I just wish there were more books about men who are kind, self-confident, compassionate, and yes, SEXY, with amazing techniques in bed. Is a man like this really less appealing to readers than a man like Gaelan? Obviously, there's a big appeal for the Gaelan types, based on the amount of books I see.

I love to read stories like this so i decided to take a chance. I was severly disappointed. I felt the plot was really jumpy and that the story did not have a nice flow. I had to go back a re-read parts because i was confused as to things that had happened. I do not recommend this book to anyone. It was awful.

Cliched but the author shows promise

The Billionaire's Secrets has a wonderful premise with great mood and setting. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was set in Newfoundland, a rare place to set a romantic suspense. I also felt that the writing was clean and the very few mistakes I found weren't bothersome, with the exception that I always thought that the rum, Screech, was a brand name, yet it was never capitalized. But what really bothered me was although the novel had been revised in 2012, the same issues remained in the new copy. The hero gets mad at heroine, then kisses her, then she gets mad and forgives him. Then the cycle starts again in a different scene. The hero appeared to have a bipolar disorder.
The plot was cliched and unbelievable. In the opening scene, the heroine is nearly run over by the hero who then drives off after telling her that if she can walk to his home, with all her luggage, she has the job. The hero is difficult to like and the heroine, though strong, is too forgiving, mostly because the hero is handsome and the child she is to educate is too cute. I also felt that the scene in the hotel was staged as if the author was trying to install the requisite love scene. It was hard to believe that in the city there was only one hotel room available and it was the honeymoon suite, and that the hospital would not allow a parent to stay with an injured child. The characters did not endear themselves by wanting to make love and open a bottle of champagne to celebrate that the child was not injured too badly.
When the lovemaking is finally consummated several scenes later, a spare bedroom magically appears beside his home office and the pair can make love there. The plot twists at the end of the book were more than predictable and the unlikeable hero switched too suddenly. The author has talent, but should employ a brutal editor to point out plot problems in her future stories. She tried too hard to recreate a Jane Eyre styled book at the expense of believability. Jane Eyre is a book that reflected the times in which it was set. It does not translate well in today's world.
But there is enough quality writing in this book to warrant saying that if the author publishes another book, I might try her again.

About the Author
Misha Glenny is the author of Dark Markek McMafia, The Rebirth of History, The Fall of Yugoslavia (which won the Overseas Press Club Award in 1993 for Best Book on Foreign Affairs), and The Balkans: Nationalism, War and the Great Power, 1804-1999. He was a BBC Central Europe correspondent-he covered the fall of Communism and the wars in the former Yugoslavia-and has been regularly consulted by the U.S. and European governments on major policy issues.

A true tour-de-force, even better than McMafia. An amazing primer on the rise of favela culture, humanized by the portrayal of one of its most notorious Don's. Terrific!

I picked up this book from the library on a whim and couldn't put it down! It is extremely well written and researched making you feel as if you are actually in the midst of the story. It answered a lot of questions that I always had about Rio de Janeiro, and more specifically the culture and politics of the infamous favelas as well as the country at large. This isn't a story about a sociopathic criminal, rather it details instead how an ordinary, decent, hardworking initially law abiding human being who was simply trying to play the cards he was dealt, found himself drawn into the vortex of crime through sheer (and very sad) desperation. With the 2016 summer Olympic Games fast approaching, this book makes for an especially compelling read. It is a tragic, haunting and exciting story that will keep you turning each page long into the night.

Rio, crime bosses -- great adventures -- marvelous stories

This is a fascinating story, well told but for some over the top sections that could have benefitted from some more careful editing.

The "hero" owned a vast section of Rio, and there are many echoes of the Godfather in Mario Puzo's The Godfather . Francisco Bonfim Lopes is just an ordinary guy who understands how to get ahead in a very complex world. Crime, of course, but he fills a very important governmental function in a part of Rio where the formal government does not function, some times at all, often badly, and almost never well.

It is fascinating to read about all of the various activities he engaged in, and to marvel really that Glenny was able to earn Lopes' confidence enough to see this rise to power from the inside.

If you have any interest in the fascinating history of Rio or Brazil, or in crime bosses wherever located, you will enjoy the story and make allowances for the writing.

About the Author
Martin R. de la Pena, a veterinarian and ornithologist, studies the reproduction of birds, on which he has published three books, alongside a dozen others, in his native Argentina. He has also produced several films on the life of birds. Maurice Rumboll, one of Argentina's top naturalists, directs environmental education programs for students and plans interpretive trails, brochure texts, and visitor centers for his country's National Park Administration, whose Ranger Training Institute he formerly headed. Previously he directed visitors' services and research at Iguazu National Park and served as Traveling Naturalist for the Argentine Museum of Natural History.

Good guide, but could be improved. I would recommend it.

I took an extended trip (2 months) through Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. This book was adequate and quite useful. I wish the range maps weren't in the back of the book, it slows you down a bit. However, from what I have seen, this is probably the best book to carry if you will be traveling over a large part of the region. The pictures are pretty good, but not great. The descriptions are also pretty good, but not great. I understand some concessions had to be made in order to make it a compact field guide. Overall I think a good job was done of balancing information/size of the book. If you can get by without regional range maps then "Birds of Chile" might be the way for you to go. It is a slightly better quality guide. If you want the range maps for the entirety of South America, and you need a compact, "backpacker friendly" guide, then don't hesitate to purchase this one.

Very Portable and Useful Little Guide

I am going birding in Bolivia -- which does not yet have it's own field guide -- later this year. So instead of carrying one guide I need to figure out which combination of books will strike a balance between usefulness and space/weight. I have a feeling this is going to be one of my main resources. It is very portable and so far about 85 percent of the birds I may potentially see are in here. In no way is this book intended to replace a full scale field guide such as "Birds of Columbia" by Hilty or "Birds of the High Andes" but then again it is less than one quarter the size and weight. Also, FYI -- it is quite a bit more than merely an illustrated checklist: you do get a small one paragraph description for each bird, a range map at the back which is a little inconvenient but many full size guides use this format also. The book is probably a little out of date as far as some of the finer points of taxonomy -- but many of the recent arguments are at least explained. All in all -- I feel this will be a very useful book to have along, though it will definitely not be the only book I'll have along.

A mandatory book for South American birders

De la Peña & Rumboll's "Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica" is a well illustrated field book with more than 1,000 species of birds from Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, southern Brazil and southern Bolivia, plus Antarctica. Easy to use and carry in the field, one can identify any species fast, being either a male, a female or a juvenile in many cases. Illustrations from Non-Passerine birds are more accurate than Passerine birds. Each plate has the English vernacular name, the latin name and some key informations about the bird sighted as colors (male and female, whether this is the case), habitat and even vocalization in some cases. Unfortunately, the distribution maps for all species are useless and should come after the description of any bird. Despite of the maps, this book is really a good purchase, a mandatory book for South American birders.

Got this book because of the pictures. Nice summary of different astronomers. Should be careful to explain to our children the difference between actual scientific facts and theory being taught to them as facts (not proven by scientific method.)
