About the Author
The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults was developed by th Ad Hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism of the Catholic Church of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). It was approved by the full body of bishops at its November 2004 General Meeting and received the subsequent recognitio of the Holy See.

Old is sometimes best in education.

Whereas the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) Catechism of the Catholic Church is a large book, more like a book of theology than what we have grown to expect in a catechism; this book, US Catholic Catechism for Adults selects material important to the Church in the USA and it is in the Question and Answer format. The Bishops have done an excellent job in their selection of material to put in the Q and A format we are comfortable with. It is attractively done and much easier to find the answers to questions anyone might have. As the title indicates the topics here are of more interest to adults and late adolescents than for children. Personally I like using this book rather than the CCC because the same material is more accessible and answers easier to find.

The Main Book for RCIA in the US

The United States Catechism for Adults (US Catechism) is THE book for RCIA in the United states. I am in my 7th year as director of an RCIA program in DC and use it in our RCIA program as the book the students read at home; the book that has assigned readings for each week. Then I ask the students to write in the "Reader's Journal for the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults" (Readers Journal), which they bring to class for small group discussions each week. They only have to bring the Readers Journal to class.
In class we use questions from the "Compendium : Catechism of the Catholic Church" (Compendium) to launch into topics and teaching, and read aloud from paragraphs in the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" (CCC) to reinforce the points. As the teacher I am aided by the "Study Guide for the U.S. Adult Catholic Catechism" (Study Guide), which identifies what questions in the Compendium and what paragraphs in the CCC match the Chapter of the US Catechism.
Then for video supplementation we are aided by components of the Catholicism series by Fr. Barron, and by the great new resource arrangement at Word on Fire (http://www.wordonfire.org/resources/browse/catechism/) which has Fr. Barron's 10 minute topic video pieces arranged by the Chapters of the CCC.
Arranging the delivery and coverage of content at RCIA has gotten a lot easier!!

content is right but Kindle Fire HD formatting is wrong

We bought the Kindle version for use in a class at our church. While all the content is the same as the printed edition, the formatting is different, making it difficult to follow along with the priest leading the discussion. First issue is the lack of page numbers in our Kindle Fire HD. Second, and more importantly, the printed edition contains blocked text in gray boxes which interjects pertinent commentary. This is presented in the Kindle as a section of text with a line before and after, but otherwise indistinguishable from the main text, which disrupts the flow of the reading and understanding.
The US Catholic Catechism is unique in providing supportive description and examples. It is not just the dry presentation of question and answer like the Baltimore Catechism of my youth, but may include real world examples of people living the faith as well as theological truths. Despite being a Catholic all our lives, we are learning new things in an adult format about our Church.
