The Perfect Dictatorship: China in the 21st Century, by Stein Ringen

The Chinese system is like no other known to man, now or in history. This book explains how the system works and where it may be moving.

Drawing on Chinese and international sources, on extensive collaboration with Chinese scholars, and on the political science of state analysis, Stein Ringen concludes that under the new leadership of Xi Jinping, the system of government has been transformed into a new regime radically harder and more ideological than the legacy of Deng Xiaoping. China is less strong economically and more dictatorial politically than the world has wanted to believe.

By analyzing the leadership of Xi Jinping, the meaning of "socialist market economy," corruption, the party-state apparatus, the reach of the party, the mechanisms of repression, taxation and public services, and state-society relations, The Perfect Dictatorship broadens the field of China studies, as well as the fields of political economy, comparative politics, development, and welfare state studies.

Review

A new interpretation of the Chinese party-state―shows the advantage that derives from a comparative theorist looking at the Chinese system.

(Tony Saich, Harvard University)

This is an excellent book which asks important questions about China's future. In a lively and persuasive manner, the author vividly analyzes key data in a comparative and theoretical manner. Far and away the best introduction to how the CCP dictatorship works.

(Edward Friedman, University of Wisconsin-Madison)

There is no lack of scholars and pundits abroad who tell us that dictatorship in China is for the greater good. In a timely and engagingly written book, Stein Ringen systematically demolishes all the components of this claim.

(Frank Dikötter, University of Hong Kong)

Ringen provides a wealth of information regarding Chinese leadership and policies in a style that doesn't assume prior knowledge, thereby making it accessible to a wide range of readers interested in the region.Library Journal

(Library Journal)

Mr. Ringen explodes this favorite propaganda slogan [that Beijing has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty] even further and does so with the fresh eyes he promises.

(Howard W. French Wall Street Journal)

About the Author

This is a timely book that produces insightful conclusions drawn ...
By Denis
This is a timely book that produces insightful conclusions drawn from objective observations and research evidence obtained through the writer's associates, friends, connections and government or party officials in China.

Born 50 years ago and educated in Hong kong, I have been living and working here all along. I have found this book has presented objectively, with the support of evidence, the observations and the current situation in today's China, that most mainlanders and even Hongkongers have been already well aware of, but many of them have chosen to turn a blind eye to them or have decided to refuse to accept them by saying that all these have been fabricated by some people with ill intention.

This book has helped me clear some doubts as to why the party-state always uses heavy-hand approach to subdue civil right activists, though many of them just employing gentle attitude and mild actions. In addition, it also explains why after 2012 when Xi Jinping took over the helm, he has been tightening control within CCP, in different aspects of the society, and on every level of government, including, recently, applying unprecedented controls on some cornerstones of Hong kong in defiance of strong oppositions from Hongkongers.

Lately, he has solidified the political, military and economic powers into his ownself alone as the core of the party-state, making himself comparable with Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong. The book also provides a logical reason behind Xi's move to concentration of powers.

Though the book's conclusions are critical and maybe objectionable to the pro Beijing Chinese, it helps many understand more why the leaders of the party-state have done what have been done to their countrymen in wake of the era of Mao, which might be, sadly but angrily to say, necessary from the point of view of CCP for their ambition to maintain its perpetual leadership in China.

Overestimating China, Underestimating its Leaders
By David Wineberg
This monograph of China explains the entire government structure, including naming all the opaque black boxes in the schema. It lays out the rankings, the social services, the offices, the departments, and most importantly, the guiding principles of all of them - The Party. It is comprehensive, realistic, and most of all, revealing. China is not doing nearly as well as it says or we think.

Ringen says the present nihilistic, materialistic, money grubbing state of China is a direct result of the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. At that time the Chinese believed they were on an upward curve, but The Party/state informed them in no uncertain terms that freedom was not and never would be available to the Chinese. “The economy is for the state; it is not for the other way around,” Ringen says. As long as the perception is that China is growing at near double digit rates, people and business are pacified, and The Party can flourish. That is why the official statistics are all lies.

Like any garden variety dictatorship, China is paranoid. There are files on literally everyone. There are untold numbers of different police forces, operating thuggishly and plainclothesed. Local officials are promoted on the basis of their intelligence gathering. Local housewives are community spies. Photocopy stores feed directly to intelligence services. Arrest and unlimited detention do not require charges, and when they come, they are often bizarre and clearly not in violation of any law. Nonetheless, people are sometimes held for life, their families evicted, and if they had students, they can be jailed and tortured too. Nothing can interfere with the ethos The Party wants for China. Ringen’s longest most detailed chapter concerns such cases of arrest or censorship. It seems that China’s whole internal focus is to prevent people coming together. Any concerted effort from anywhere is crushed, often before it can act. That is how thorough and subversive the intelligence gathering is. The country can afford over a million people censoring the internet, but it won’t allow people driven from the countryside to the cities the same social rights as city dwellers. Ringen says China has performed remarkably poorly in raising living standards, compared to other countries such as South Korea or even Britain when compared from the same starting point in 1949. The Party, however, has performed miracles for its members. Ringen estimates the state skims more than half and possibly two-thirds of GDP. It clearly does not give that much back. Taxes are oppressive, and daily corruption adds to the burden.

The bulk of the book examines the structures in place: the tax structure, the safety net, the justice system, the hukou residency system, the class system, and of course, The Party, for which everything else has been built. Ringen says China is not there for its people (a welfare state) and it is not there for its vision (ideological state). It is there purely to support, sustain and promote The Party, which he calls a “trivial state” – no greater purpose.

Ringen cautions that we might be at common turning point, one we always miss. The rise of the Nazis, the rise of the USSR – and maybe now China. The parallels are eerily similar. We have long, and continue to pretend, that China is moving towards liberalization and democracy. It isn’t. It is moving to secure the future of The Party, and that does not involve either democracy or liberalization, he says. The leadership makes no bones about it. The sooner we start taking the official words of Chinese leaders literally, the better we will be positioned to deal with the fallout.

Fascinating
By Autamme_dot_com
China is a fascinating country with a very interesting political and economic system that is often inscrutable to outsiders. This book sets out to explain how things work in the country today and seek to guess how things will be in the future.

The system may be protected by a façade or misunderstanding, aided perhaps by a spate of good fortune. The author believes that the government today is a relatively hard-line regime that is less strong economically and more dictatorial politically than the world has wanted to believe. This reviewer doesn’t know, but the author seemingly knows his stuff and puts forward a sensitive, powerful and engaging series of arguments to sustain his position. It brings forth a number of interesting questions and observations against the Chinese state which, at worst case, could translate into traumatic economic actions and maybe even civil disturbances. The author goes against the grain and does not agree that the existing system works for the common Chinese good, even if it may appear different to western eyes.

The Chinese economy is large and there has been massive economic growth, yet the economy has not transformed into a strong, structured and sustainable system. Question marks exist as to whether it has been built on a weak, questionable structure that may fall down like the proverbial house of cards in the future. If it should happen, the reverberations both internally and externally will be long-ranging. Are the current leaders really leading, or clinging on with a harsh, dictatorial style, desperately trying to keep the train on its tracks? The author seems to believe that that they are struggling to keep the lid on things rather than driving the country forward with a strict, authoritarian yet benevolent style. What of the future? The author believes that there is a tug-of-war about ideologies and how they are implemented and it is far from clear which side will win.

This was a fascinating and enjoyable book that is packed full of information that provides a great overview of China and a bit of what makes the country tick. The book does not claim to have all the answers or even can develop all of the key questions, yet it does not pull its punches with what it can comment on. You don’t even need to be a “China nerd” to enjoy this book. It is more than capable of satisfying the casual, curious reader at the same time.

A Wonderful, Frustrating Read
By J.C. Prins
On the one hand, the story is absolutely wonderful - evocative, compelling, and mesmerizing. The premise is great, although I have some questions about the long-range effects of that premise. The characters are well-developed, even the minor ones. The basic writing style is enjoyable. Following the adventures of Will, the main protagonist, has been an adventure for me as well coupled with significant lack of sleep as I am seemingly forced to keep finding out what happens next. Because of the excellence of the story, I will likely get the next book in the series.

On the other hand, the editing sucks. It is not a matter of typos. There are few of those. However, there is every manner of other types of editing errors. Many times it seems like the author dictated the book, but never read it to make sure the words came out right. So "clouds" is used instead of "crowds" or "exaggerating" instead of "exacerbating." It becomes almost a game to identify the correct word. Many sentences seem to have too few or too many words such that the sentences are indecipherable. Then there are the factual errors. Just one example - neither Gen. Grant nor Gen. Lee were at the battle of Gettysburg. The author seems compelled to contract any word structure with "had" or "could" so that it is sometimes hard to tell which is meant. Worst of all, for me, the author frequently writes as if he hasn't read his own work. There are constant errors of fact regarding things that have happened, which is frustrating and aggravating. There are annoying summaries of things that happened just chapters earlier. All of these editing errors cause the reader to stop her headlong progression to go, "What? Wait!" It is almost, almost enough to make me want to stop, but I still need to read the next chapter.

This book and this series could be one of the greats, if a final thorough edit had been done. As it is, the substantive editing errors hold this book (and all the others) back. It was a hard decision whether to give three or four stars. I chose four stars, because I want to recommend the series with the caveat that some teeth gnashing will occur.

Too bad the science is bogus
By Casey Elliott
I have enjoyed this series to this point, but I don't think I will finish it.
When an author takes liberties with basic science in a science fiction story, especially when the error does not help the story, I get impatient.
The first error that caught my attention was the "below sea level" lake on an island southwest of England. Really. What causes it to drain?
In this book, our hero teleported into a cave that in a vacuum. Really?! Give me a break. And how does this help the story?
These types of errors detract from an otherwise pleasant time loop story with interesting characters and a decent love story.
I won't finish this series and I doubt I will read any more from this author. I'm sorry I wasted my time. Sorry Alex.

not like the Aliomenti which is self centered all about Me ...
By Amazon Customer
Will keeps his journey going in the 4th book "Birth of the Alliance". There are issues for Will but he overcomes them. He makes the Alliance to be what it should be helping people (humans) out, not like the Aliomenti which is self centered all about Me (Arthur). Will takes the Cavern and makes it a home for everyone of the Alliance. The Alliance grows. With Wills knowledge he invites things before their time which helps the Alliance. There are problems along the way but are things worked out for the good? What happens to Will.

To find out you must read the first three in the Aliomenti Saga. This is a must read book. Alex you are a great authur can't wait to read the rest of the saga and move on to other books you have written. Keep up the good work.

Despite the fact that thousands of English-wheel machines have been sold the past ten years, no book has been dedicated to English wheeling until now. Owners of these machines have been at a loss on how to really use them because of the lack of detailed published material.

This new book from Wolfgang Publications covers all aspects of English wheeling: from making your own wheel to learning the basics and from fabricating high-crown panels to creating reverse flares.

The photos used throughout the book illustrate what makes a good English wheel and exactly how to use an English wheel. Sidebars and interviews with famous wheelers and fabricators from around the world give personal insight from the best of the best.

As a serious auto hobbyist, long-time English wheeler, published author, and retired shop teacher William Longyard is ideally suited to finally lift the veil of missing and incorrect information regarding the best and most productive use of the English wheel.

Great introduction to the English Wheel
By Jon P. Olson
I'm the kind of guy who sees a tool, knows he's interested in using it and wants to start using it right away in order to learn how to apply it best. That's not necessarily something you do with the English Wheel. I seem to have a vague recollection from childhood of being introduced to this sort of machine, though I can't recall how or where, and initially thinking how easy it was to operate, what a simple thing it was. The person showing me told me to take it slowly, showed how the simple pressure of the wheel against the anvil caused the sheet metal to gradually bend. It seemed so easy I immediately got careless and did the natural thing... I failed to run across the proper length of the metal and ended up with the wrong degree of curvature. The guy showing me said it was okay, told me it was possible to correct it and how, but I just seemed to lose focus as I tried to adjust, and then I made the big mistake... pulled the panel out without releasing the pressure. There was a loud clack of the wheel against the anvil, and the lesson ended immediately. I don't think I ever saw an English Wheel again. Then I requested a review copy of this book since I've been looking to brush up on my understanding of all things automotive, and that old memory stirred in my mind, creating a strange fascination with the notion of auto body restoration and this tool in particular.

The great thing about this book is that it explains things well. Despite my vague recollection of failing dismally with it in my first encounter, the wheel still doesn't seem to me like a complicated machine. In fact, it plainly isn't. But therein lies the difficulty, because the simplicity of it makes the patience and skill of the user all the more important. And to be honest, I struggle with the patience required for something like this. It's a craftsman's tool, and the dictates of modern life require that craftsmen be both accurate and work quickly in order to succeed. The skill and experience it must take to produce panels both quickly and to the precise requirements with this tool must be enormous, but this book prepares you well for learning. I like that it explains not only the basic functions of the wheel, techniques, how and why to be cautious, and the various wheels available on the market, but a handful of other shop tools that may be useful in conjunction with it. I even began to think of other uses for the wheel... I suppose I should have been aware of its use for crafting panels for aviation but I wasn't. And now that I think of it, I suppose it would also be possible to perhaps find some work potentially crafting medieval replica armor for Renaissance Fest enthusiasts, or some such thing. I guess the sky's the limit, or at least your imagination is, if you can think of a use for a shaped and planished sheet metal panel, you can apply the wheel to it. It could even be useful for medium- to large-scale art sculpture, though I don't know that most folks who are looking to learn its use would generally lean in that direction. All in all, I highly recommend this book as an introductory volume. At the very least, it's capable of inspiring and educating, and the abundant illustrations really help in understanding the process.

lots of info, starting with the basics
By Stephen Wittkop
Mr. Longyard did well with this book, starting with the most basics and working you toward visual lessons by some that are masters in the field. I particularly liked the starting lesson, put a curve in a piece of metal and then make it flat again...

This is a very good book dedicated to the English wheel
By Graham Gott
This is a very good book dedicated to the English wheel, which usually gets a small section in most metal shaping books. While I have seen some of the material before in other books or videos, there is definitely a new twist on it here and it's the first time I've seen all this information gathered in one place. This is very well illustrated with color photos that clearly illustrate what the author is talking about in the text. I really liked that there were several chapters that followed expert metalworkers step-by-step as they worked on part of a larger project. This shows how one might apply some of the basic techniques shown in the book to an actual project. I am patiently waiting for Amazon to get Mr. Longyard's next book in stock.

What Got You Here Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful!, by Marshall Goldsmith, Mark Reiter

What’s holding you back? Your hard work is paying off. You are doing well in your field. But there is something standing between you and the next level of achievement. Perhaps one small flaw–a behavior you barely even recognize–is the only thing that’s keeping you from where you want to be.

Who can help? Marshall Goldsmith is an expert at helping global leaders overcome their sometimes unconscious annoying habits and attain a higher level of success. His one-on-one coaching comes with a six-figure price tag. But, in this audiobook, you get Marshall’s great advice without the hefty fee!

What is the solution? The Harvard Business Review asked Goldsmith, “What is the most common problem faced by the executives that you coach?” Inside, he answers this question by discussing not only the key beliefs of successful leaders, but also the behaviors that hold them back. He addresses the fundamental problems that often come with success–and offers ways to attack these problems. Goldsmith outlines twenty habits commonly found in the corporate environment and provides a systematic approach to helping you achieve a positive change in behavior.

From Publishers Weekly
Goldsmith, an executive coach to the corporate elite, pinpoints 20 bad habits that stifle already successful careers as well as personal goals like succeeding in marriage or as a parent. Most are common behavioral problems, such as speaking when angry, which even the author is prone to do when dealing with a teenage daughter's belly ring. Though Goldsmith deals with touchy-feely material more typical of a self-help book—such as learning to listen or letting go of the past—his approach to curing self-destructive behavior is much harder-edged. For instance, he does not suggest sensitivity training for those prone to voicing morale-deflating sarcasm. His advice is to stop doing it. To stimulate behavior change, he suggests imposing fines (e.g., $10 for each infraction), asserting that monetary penalties can yield results by lunchtime. While Goldsmith's advice applies to everyone, the highly successful audience he targets may be the least likely to seek out his book without a direct order from someone higher up. As he points out, they are apt to attribute their success to their bad behavior. Still, that may allow the less successful to gain ground by improving their people skills first. (Jan. 2)

From Booklist
By now, the CEO as celebrity is old hat. (Just start counting the books from former company heads.) That goes for the executive-recruiter-cum-president-makers. What has yet to be explored--until now--is the celebrity business coach, the individual who helps C-level executives correct flaws, whether invisible or public. A frequent interviewee in major business magazines like Fortune, Goldsmith, with the sage help and advice of his collaborator Reiter, pens a self-help career book, filled with disguised anecdotes and candid dialogue, all soon slated for bestsellerdom. His steps in coaching for success are simple, honest, without artifice: gather feedback from appropriate colleagues and cohorts, determine which behaviors to change (and remember, Goldsmith specifically focuses on behavior, not skills or knowledge), apologize, advertise, listen, thank, follow up, and practice feed-forward. Admittedly, this shrewd organizational psychologist only works with leaders he knows will listen, follow advice, and change--especially considering that he doesn't receive fees until improvements are secure and visible. On the other hand, these are words and processes anyone will benefit from, whether wannabe manager or senior executive. Barbara Jacobs

Review
"As a guy who has had some success in my life, I especially understood and appreciated what this book taught me. The point of the book is actually the title and subtitle. He states: "The problems we'll be looking at in this book are not life-threatening diseases (although ignored for too long they can destroy a career). They're not deep-seated neuroses that require years of therapy or tons of medication to erase. "More often than not, they are simple behavioral tics 'bad habits that we repeat dozens of times a day in the workplace' which can be cured by (a) pointing them out, (b) showing the havoc they cause among the people surrounding us, and (c) demonstrating that with a slight behavioral tweak we can achieve a much more appealing effect.

"One of the keys to a good business book can be found in the Table of Contents. This book is not different. The four sections are titled: The Trouble with Success; The Twenty Habits That Hold You Back from the Top; How We Can Change for the Better; Pulling Out the Stops. If you go into a bookstore to check this book out, just look at the twenty habits. They were a scary eye opener for yours truly. I used up one hi-lighter on this book and found way more bad habits I have and need to change than I care to admit. The nice thing about this book is that you can identify the flaws you didn't think you had and fix them without anybody knowing you had a problem. Now that is a huge benefit. All in all, this is an important book." -- Jack Covert, Jack Covert Selects, 1800CEOREAD

"Goldsmith has no interest in probing why people behave the way they do. He doesn't try to reshape their personalities. He measures success by the extent to which other people's perceptions of his clients change for the better . . . he teaches them how to apologize for their shortcomings -- 'the most magical, healing, restorative gesture human beings can make,' he writes in his book [What Got You Here Won't Get You There] . . . and then to ask for help in getting better . . . 'It's much harder to change people's perceptions of your behavior than to change your behavior,' he says . . ." -- Barbara Rose, Chicago Tribune

"If you decide to purchase one new book this year I encourage you to make it What Got You Here Won't Get You There. This is the top tier of leadership information available!" -- weLEAD Rating - highly recommended

"The book is written pretty much the way Marshall speaks. It is simple, brutally honest, and humorous. It doesn't try to get fancy. It's economically composed, crafted to be useful. It will appeal to people with no time to waste. Like its author, it's practical and to the point . . . What Got You Here will be required reading for many years to come. -- David Zweig, Senior Editor, World Business Academy Perspectives

"This is a superb book, practical with a rich understanding of human behaviour and how to change. Mr. Goldsmith has endless examples from his work and his own personal failings, and the result is a chance for readers whose companies don't hire him to get the benefit of his expertise." -- Harvey Schachter, Globe and Mail

"What holds you back from achievement? Marshall Goldsmith is an executive coach who has worked with over eighty CEOs in the world's top organizations -- so he's in the perfect position to examine how global leaders overcome self-defeating habits, translating these lessons to the modern condition and everyday man in What Got You Here Won't Get You There. From key beliefs in successful leaders to common behavior flaws, this book translates drawbacks to success, and will find an audience in any general-interest collection where self-improvement is of interest." -- Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review/California Bookwatch

"You'll see the results whether you're a CEO or just getting started." -- BookPage

To Marshall Goldsmith: Thank You for Writing This Book (And We're Not Sucking Up):

Marshall Goldsmith is one of the most successful of corporate America's celebrity coaches -- he typically makes upwards of a quarter-million dollars for a year or so of work with each individual client -- and is also one of the best. ... The beauty of Goldsmith's approach lies not just in the simplicity of his insights, but also in the clarity of his advice. ... Goldsmith has written a leadership manual that could double as a guide to good parenting and marital peace. -- Knowledge@Wharton

Misleading title; should be called "how to be less of a jerk"
By Alex
I suppose it's my own fault for not researching this book more carefully. Based on the title, I thought it would be about how the habits or activities that lead to success in lower levels of a person's career might become less important or even limiting later on in their career, and how to deal with that. Like how a manager needs to act differently from an individual contributor, or how a middle manager needs to act differently from a line manager. That's not what this book is about. This book is about how talented people who are arrogant jerks can become nicer in order to progress in their careers. That's useful if it's what you're looking for, but it's not what I was hoping to find.

As a corollary, I also felt the author perceived the world with a "cop's fallacy". Police officers sometimes assume everyone in a certain neighborhood or of a certain demographic is scum, because they are only called in to deal with crime, so most people they deal with in that neighborhood or demographic are criminals. Much in the same way, Goldsmith seems to believe that all successful people are arrogant and overconfident, when the truth is more likely that successful people who are not hugely arrogant do not lead their employers to hire a consultant like Goldsmith to fix their behavioral issues, so he doesn't interact with them.

Just Shut Up & Say Thank You
By Mark Raciappa
So much of our stress (in life & business) and conflict could be avoided if we simply followed the advice in the title above. This was one of the really outstanding points in this book that I can benefit from. The author has the experience, stories and track record helping successful people implement positive change in their behavior and now, you and & I can apply the same learning. Some of the other key points that jumped out at me:
1. Avoiding a bad deal is sometimes better than closing a good one;
2. The fallacy of "added value";
3. The "playing favorites" test;
4. The four commitments we must make today to move forward;
5. The daily "baker's dozen" questions;
6. How to implement the process of "feed forward";
7. The "eight rules" with #8 being my favorite: "The best time to change is now. Look at the time line - sanity does not prevail. There's a good chance that tomorrow will be as crazy as today."
8. What would the "95-year old you" say to the "you of today"? ( a very powerful exercise that stopped me in my tracks.)

While the examples of Goldsmith's work focus on his success with "high-powered" CEO's and corporate leaders, the principles are applicable to all (humans) regardless of career or social status. I recommend this book highly and believe that more and more insight will be gleaned from subsequent re-reading. So go get it, read it, study it, re-read it, use it. If in doubt, refer to rule #8 above.

Exceptional
By Reasonable Reviewer
There is an old saying that it is not failure that trips us up, it is success.

Mr. Goldsmith's book certainly bears that out.

The fundamental premise of the book is that highly successful people can get caught in ruts that are invisible to them, but painfully obvious to those around them. In turn, these ruts prevent success at the current level and further upward mobility.

Goldsmith points out that successful people tend to spend more time contemplating their successes and not focusing on their failures. Successful people then often miss the opportunity for self improvement that might come from a more unvarnished look at one's own performance.

The book includes a myriad of examples and some great, common sense insights.

I highly recommend this book.

In service,

Rich

"Greg Taylor is the up-and-coming author in this field, and what he has to say makes fascinating reading." -- Graham Hancock

From the Publisher

"Greg Taylor is the up-and-coming author in this field, and what he has to say makes fascinating reading." -- Bestselling author Graham Hancock.

In 2004, Greg Taylor decoded clues left on the cover of The Da Vinci Code to reveal the topics of the sequel to Dan Brown's bestseller. Five years before publication of The Lost Symbol, he wrote a book (Da Vinci in America, subsequently republished as The Guide to Dan Brown's The Solomon Key), correctly predicting that Freemasonry, Washington, D.C., the House of the Temple, Kryptos and many other locations and historical elements would play a part in the new book.

Now, in his revised and updated The Guide to Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol, Taylor gives the ultimate guide to Dan Brown's latest bestseller. From Noetic Science to the influence of Freemasonry and Deism on the Founding Fathers, the Guide fills in all the details so that you have a better understanding of many strange and secret topics that are covered in The Lost Symbol.

Greg Taylor is the perfect tour guide to The Lost Symbol.

From the Author
"The controversial storyline of The Da Vinci Code has catalyzed a re-evaluation of the ‘history ’which many of us were taught in school. Dan Brown’s next book, The Solomon Key, is set to act in the same manner upon the history of the United States – outlining the Masonic ideals behind the founding of the nation, and which may still have an influence today through powerful secret societies like ‘Skull and Bones’. I’m pleased to offer this primer to the ‘hidden history’ of the United States of America, which will be a great resource for understanding the topics in Dan Brown’s next bestseller."

Fantastic companion piece to Dan Brown's next novel!
By J. Young
Being a student of "alternative history", in the same vein as Dan Brown, and being a reader of The Daily Grail, Greg Taylor's alternative news website, I am anxiously awaiting Brown's next edition. After getting Greg Taylor's book, I am even more excited, but much more prepared!

Greg takes us through many possible twists and turns of the next Brown novel. Even if Greg's ideas and possibilities are not included in the novel, I learned so much and found many other books I needed to read, study, and add to my personal library. I feel more prepared for Brown's next book and will not have to stop and look up nearly as much information as I go through the story.

Taylor's book is well written, well noted with a great bibliography! One you will want to use as a "wish list" and study guide. I thoroughly enjoyed it! If you're just a book worm and have enjoyed Brown's books, get this one and see if Greg turns out to be correct in what he believes the story line might be and the history intertwined within.

Liked it so much I bought 2!
By Regina Shultz
Greg Taylor is not a newcomer to these subjects jumping on the Da Vinci Code bandwagon. Greg has many years of scholarly work to back up his views and enough research to fill several books. I look forward to reading them all.

I am a long time reader and fan of his Daily Grail web site and continue to be amazed at the volume of research and facts Greg has access to. His readers had information into the background of the Da Vinci Code long before Dan Brown's book came out. If you want the real inside scoop into the heart pumping, mysterious adventures, look for this name...Greg Taylor.

Clybourne Park: A Play (Tony Award Best Play), by Bruce Norris

Clybourne Park spans two generations fifty years apart. In 1959, Russ and Bev are selling their desirable two-bedroom at a bargain price, unknowingly bringing the first black family into the neighborhood (borrowing a plot line from Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun) and creating ripples of discontent among the cozy white residents of Clybourne Park. In 2009, the same property is being bought by a young white couple, whose plan to raze the house and start again is met with equal disapproval by the black residents of the soon-to-be-gentrified area. Are the issues festering beneath the floorboards actually the same, fifty years on? Bruce Norris's excruciatingly funny and squirm-inducing satire explores the fault line between race and property.

Clybourne Park is the winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play.

Review

“A spiky and damningly insightful new comedy.” ―Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“Superb, elegantly written, and hilarious.” ―John Lahr, The New Yorker

“Courageous…Norris's elegantly structured play nails marital tensions as much as it does racial disharmony in an evening of ebullient provocation.” ―Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

Deserving of Widespread Productions
By B. Silverberg
First of all, let me say that I'm glad to have purchased this book when it was selling at a price far more reasonable than the one it is being sold for at this writing. Apparently, the only edition currently available is the one published by the Royal Court Theatre in London, even though the play -- by a Chicago-based playwright -- was produced earlier by Playwrights Horizon in New York, where I was fortunate to have seen it last March.

Reading the play reminded me of how enjoyable it was to have seen, as images of the superb Off-Broadway cast repeatedly flashed in my memory. Mr. Norris' play presents a different perspective on Lorraine Hansberry's classic play "A Raisin in the Sun." While that masterwork focuses on the Youngers, a Black family in Chicago about to move to a new home in Clybourne Park, a previously all-white neighborhood, Act I of "Clybourne Park" takes place at the same time, 1959, in the house to which the Youngers are about to move. Hansberry's sole white character in "Raisin...", Karl Lindner, visits the home just after his attempt to talk the Youngers out of moving into his neighborhood. That attempt having failed, he now tries to persuade the Stollers, the family selling the house at below-market value, to revoke the offer. We gradually learn why the house is available at such a bargain rate, through scenes involving a quirky group of well-delineated characters. Norris skillfully combines serious themes with a good deal of humor, and provides all of the actors with very juicy roles.

This last continues to be true in Act II, which takes place fifty years later, in 2009, in the same house, now much changed. The same actors from Act I reappear in different roles, though some are in parallel relationships (e.g., married couples), and we soon realize how some of the Act II characters are connected to some whom we met in Act I. Norris cleverly shows us how the more things differ, the more they stay the same, as presumably "enlightened" characters prove to be even more uncivilized than their counterparts from half a century before. Once again, the characters are clearly drawn, and the dialogue is crisp and revealing. The play's conclusion merges the two acts neatly and theatrically.

"Clybourne Park" is an outstanding play which should be on the schedules of repertory companies all over the country.

Passage of time
By P. G. Springer
I like plays when there is a lapse of generations or decades between the first and second acts, like Cloud Nine and (in another way) Arcadia and various others. Clybourne Park does this extremely well, showing us racial and housing situations in Chicago with a gap of 50 years. Plays like this show is that every age thinks it is on top of it all, aware and understanding, when in fact we always live without awareness of what will come and our cleverness is sure to be surpassed by the future's own arrogance toward the past.

Strange, but oddly very good
By Mandy
Norris really does a great job of contrasting the views of racism in the 50's as compared to the views of racism in the modern day. You can distinctly see the differences in the way they talk, the way they act and react to one another's comments, the way they see the world. In act two, the issue of offense and what is and isn't offensive comes into the picture. It's a very well-done play. However, it only gets four stars from me for two reasons: 1. There are so many characters that it gets really confusing at times. They all talk in short, awkward sentences and there are times when everyone's talking at once. It really is supposed to be watched and listened to rather than read. 2. I didn't quite understand the significance of the ending, if there was any. Again, it might be different when I actually see it performed, but reading it left me baffled.
