Good subject matter, horrific writing. Typos like you would not believe! "...the topography and physical environment of one's residence may increase one's chances of being inflicted with an can we leave in disease?" A very accessible text with good information for use in a clinical setting or for students preparing for clinical practice. I use this text to facilitate discussion and learning with pre-professional health students and appreciate its practical approach to learning the aspects of culture most salient to providing good and culturally sensitive health care.

On a picky and academic note however, it is poorly edited. The text is rife with typos and also lacking in some text references; cultural theories from the social sciences are introduced and provide the backbone for some of the "domains," yet the theorists by whom they were developed are not identified.

Index is inaccurate

The information is great and informative but the index in the back of the book is completely wrong. Therefore, it is unnecessarily difficult finding information throughout the book. If memory serves me correctly, I had this same problem with an earlier version of this book when I was in school for my BSN.

As a psychologist, Kennedy is concerned with the mature person and notes that maturity is marked by the acceptance of the distress that is part and parcel of our relationships with others. Escape into drugs, work, vapid entertainment, or even prayer, is not a solution. We must accept the pain as well as the pleasure of relationships, for "close and affectionate relationships with other people are the prime signal of healthy personhood."

It is interesting that there is no place for solitude in Kennedy's world. Perhaps he is right that the primary obligation for all of us is the difficult work of loving others.

Accessible and Direct

The structure of Kennedy's venture into human mechanics allows for the reader to start, finish, and continue at any point in the book. With chapters not totaling more than five or six pages each, every idea is explored with concise consideration. I often found myself looking at the chapter titles and skipping to whatever section was applicable for that point of time.
Despite the melodramatic title, "Pain of Being Human" is one of those books you keep near your nightstand for daily reflection. It takes a Christian perspective on life and introduces morals that make sense in the modern world. I am not a religious person and I still gleaned so much insight from the text without getting the feeling I was being preached to.
It is a definite good choice and should go under the category "Self-Help book with dignity."

Pain = Growth

The Pain of Being Human crystalises all those thoughts you had about existence - but never wrote down. Lucidly written without the usual psycho-babble that psychologists like to impress us with. Another book that gave me greater insight into the pain of being human, was the inspired "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. Patton's Jesus is faced with the unimagined dilemma of his own spirituality being confronted by his immense humanity. I enjoyed both these books but came away with a greater understanding after reading Patton's book. Admittedly Patton's book is written as a novel where Kennedy's book is written as a dissertation. Kennedy's book is accessible and sure to become a standard on Psychology. Recommended

    The Perfection of a Genre

    The term Ruthian, in honor of Babe Ruth, is a metaphor frequently used in sports to describe an accomplishment that doesn't merely break a record but so far exceeds anything that occurred previously that it deserves this ultimate superlative. On the subject of learning how to drive a race car, Carl Lopez' book, "Going Faster" is Ruthian. A road-racing fan for many years, I had always wanted to take up amateur, SCCA racing but had difficulty developing a budget for it. Now that I can afford it, I wanted to find a way to make up for lost time in learning driving techniques. Although a lot of progressive, in-car experience is a necessity, Going Faster prepares you for learning by its incredible detail and brilliant illustrations, presented in down to earth fashion, used to describe virtually every aspect of the interaction of vehicle dynamics, race course variation, and proper driver reaction. If you have a library of other books on the subject, donate them to a thrift store and buy this book. Even if you never race, reading a book that covers a subject brilliantly is a pleasure.

    The Best Manual of a Beginning Competition Driver

    I couldn't "swallow" this book at once, it took me three sessions during a couple of months to figure out that amongst the good books on motor sports this one serves the role of a guidebook, of a manual of a beginning competition driver, best of all.

    What do I mean by "good books"? Competition Driving by Alain Prost, The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi, Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson, Sports Car and Competition Driving by Paul Frere, to name a few. All of them are wise and not overcomplicated, and have no buzz about the success stories of champions, the buzz which is useless for the reader interested in driving techniques.

    I've found out that the definition of oversteer and understeer here is the most complete and most correct amongst the books that I've listed, yet without the formulas that may frighten somebody. It took the author 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behaviour. This is the first big advantage of this book.

    Another major advantage of this book is the serious attention of the author to the role of hardware, which is sometimes overlooked by the other writers, who claim that hardware is important, but do not write in-depth chapters about it. The book has may illustrations and explanations how the center of gravity, wheel base, and the suspension elements like springs, shock absorbers and the roll bars affect longitudal and lateral load transfer speed and motion, which occurs during acceleration, braking and cornering; how various adjustment affect the weight applied to each of the wheels, and how this affects car behaviour. He is the only author to mention the effect of download on coefficient of friction of the wheel, and why the total friction of the wheels is at its highest level when the download on each wheel is the same, i.e. the car is balanced. The other writers in this case did only mention that to keep the car balanced is important without a sound explanation.

    The book has an appendix with the listing of racing resources, it has a good bibliography and a useful glossary and an index.

    I highly recommend this book, although sometimes I had a feeling that more humour and liveliness would have made it even better. Please also consider buying "Skip Barber - Going Faster" DVD in addition to this book.

    Confidence Booster 2.0

    I've been excited about this book's release ever since I read Juth's first book about the art of compression. I've always tried to capture the best audio possible at the source, but when things don't seem to fit together like a puzzle I generally start questioning my EQ choices. This book is a quick read and really insightful for understanding proper and creative ways of using EQ, which was definitely a confidence booster for me. This book is a must read for anyone serious about engineering and wanting to get more confidence in their EQ choices. Juth has awesome insights on both EQ and compression, and I'm grateful he felt the desire to share his years of wisdom with the world, because it's helped me out a bunch.

    No book can be everything to everyone, but this one comes very close! The book is essentially several books in one (supporting the "Comprehensive Treatment" part in the title). The coverage is broad and deep. In fact, it covers the contents of Shreve's two volumes plus much more at roughly the same level of rigor. For this reason I find it useful as my go-to reference. The numerical methods chapter is particularly well written, owing to the authors deep understanding of Monte Carlo methods. The level of rigor and style is at the upper undergraduate to graduate level. One particularly interesting feature is the difficulty of the problems. All the chapters contain the standard problems (often found elsewhere in other books as well) but most chapters also have surprisingly difficult, original and extremely illuminating problems as well. However, what is missing in such a comprehensive treatment is a section on credit risk. This of course is the reviewers favorite area, but also one that is absolutely fundamental in Risk Management and should be included in the Second Edition.

    Highly recommended

    I was lucky enough to use this textbook in multiple classes. This is not only a huge benefit for students looking to save on books - but the cohesive nature of the text & notation connects concepts from various courses (probability theory; stochastic calculus; financial math) quite easily. For example, you may not get the same experience if you learned stochastic calculus and financial mathematics from two different textbooks.

    The authors did a great job covering pricing from various user levels (discrete; continuous; single asset; multi asset; path-dependent; etc) as well as all the math behind it (it -really- is quite comprehensive.) The problem sets are challenging enough to engage students/users but I found that the the sections that preceded the questions outlined clear (& often multiple) methods on solving similar problems. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in quantitative finance, whether academically or professionally.

    this would be an excellent choice for studying financial mathematics

    I was assigned this book for several fourth year undergraduate level courses. The text contains an advanced treatment of the type of mathematics needs for options pricing, including stochastic calculus and brownian motion.

    Ultimately, I have yet to find another text that covers this breadth on the topic, with this level of complexity. The book is well-written and self-contained. For any upper division mathematics student, this would be an excellent choice for studying financial mathematics.

    About the Author
    Dr. Liqun Luo earned his bachelor degree from University of Science & Technology of China and PhD from Brandeis University. Since 1997, Dr. Luo has taught neurobiology to undergraduate and graduate students at Stanford University, where he also directs a lab studying the assembly and function of neural circuits. Dr. Luo is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

    The newest and best introductory neuroscience text around today

    PRINCIPLES OF NEUROBIOLOGY is brand new neuroscience text book aimed at the upper division undergraduate neuroscience major or the first year neuroscience graduate student. It is exceptional in its organization that, as sole author Liqun Luo states in the preface, ",,, intentionally breaks from the traditional division of neuroscience into molecular, cellular, systems and developmental sections. Instead, most chapters integrate these approaches." It is wonderfully successful at this. In addition, the single author approach results in a uniform style and even depth of coverage. The 13 chapters are carefully organized and sequenced so that the book can be used, as written from beginning to end as a one or two semester course that covers a huge amount of material, from 19th century psychophysics to the newest state of the art in molecular neurobiology.

    The figures are beautifully done and well-chosen. The experiments illustrated range from redrawings of classical experiments from the middle the 20 century to state-of-the-art neuronal molecular and cell biology and optogenetics. The visual system is especially well done, but so are the sections on the other senses and motor systems. Regulatory systems are covered, including sexual behavior. Learning and memory and development and evolution of the mammalian central nervous system are here, as well as a chapter on neuropsychiatry disorders. The text closes with a welcome and badly needed chapter on techniques, something that is overlooked in most of the other general neuroscience texts that I have read.

    This text covers general introductory neuroscience from A-Z. I should note that by "neuroscience", I mean principally the structure and function of mammalian neurons and the central nervous system. While there are behavioral experiments described throughout the text, this is definitely a neurobiology-based approach to neuroscience as the title suggests. It does not venture into cognitive neuroscience, something that is better left to a more specialized text. There is also relatively little pharmacology or neurochemistry per se.

    PRINCIPLES OF NEUROBIOLOGY is, in my opinion, the best single textbook for teaching a comprehensive survey of modern neuroscience. The author is to be congratulated on this fine effort. We will be adopting this book next fall for our first year graduate course, "Foundations of Neuroscience".

    In loose-leaf version, holes impinge on text

    I have not yet started reading the book...but I was disappointed that in the loose-leaf version, there are holes punched that impinge on the text by about 1 mm. If they had just off-set the holes a little it would have been perfect.
    In most pages I've looked at, it is easy to guess at the word or letters the holes eliminated, but it is irritating.

This manual on test preparation in radiology is the first of its kind, and one frantically needed as medical examination joins the digital age with the abolition of the oral boards and the corresponding well-established preparatory methods. As Aristotle was a student of Plato, who ultimately surpassed his teacher in philosophic largesse, so too shall Prometheus Lionhart, as his gift of knowledge turns to wisdom, and that wisdom to the ability to repay student loans… maybe.

    Decent book in bad need of an editor

    First the good. I liked the style of this book. Easy to read vernacular and colloquialisms. It's like having a classmate explain things to you in a way that you can easily understand. And it seems to cover all of the topics that are fair game on the core. So it's definitely worth a read.

    The bad -- (1) it strongly relies on "buzz words", especially the "gamesmanship" chapter; I don't know if the author appreciates that the test is very different from the USMLE or "writtens" and is "image rich" and not going to ever give you a descriptive sentence full of buzz words to run with. instead they will show you the picture. So it doesn't help if you associate "punched out lytic lesion" with gout -- you need to get there from looking at a radiograph of gout. As such this book would benefit from significnt addition of images. Or you need to use it in conjunction with the Internet and look up images as you read along (which makes it a much less quick read). (2) this book needs an editor, badly. Clearly the author was in a rush to get it out in time for the next offering of the core, but there's a typo or grammatical error on virtually every page. And the author apparently doesn't know the differences between the word "effect" and "affect" -- he pretty consistently uses the wrong one, which is a bit distracting.

    So basically this is a very nice first draft, but hopefully there will be a cleaned up, more "image rich" second edition on the horizon.

    Wish I came across this resource sooner.

    I bought this one week before the examination, but wish I had it for longer. Used in conjunction with question banks and cases, it is a great reference to organize and consolidate your thoughts. Does a great job of explaining questions correctly. It is an excellent reference and I would recommend it to anyone studying for the core.

    Many typographical errors should be fixed imo - but still the best source out there.

    but I enjoy the style

    This is a review book. Clearly not intended to be your only resource studying for the CORE. I'm not sure why it helps me that the author calls all the silly things we need to know "trivia" or "high yield random facts", but I enjoy the style. There is a high correlation with Rad Primer questions, my other favorite study tool.
