Once my preferred textbook
By Radovan Škultéty
When I was choosing the teaching material for a private English course in China at the end of 2006, I came across this Face2Face Elementary. It appeared as simply yet effectively organized textbook, and this first impression was later confirmed by my classroom experience. I would love to keep on using this textbook in my later courses but it is quite hard to get (in time and in reasonable quantities) here in Taiwan, for which reason I cannot compare it to the newest stuff on the textbook market either.
Note: The accompanying CD-ROM is a strong point of this set. It won the prestigious English-speaking Union President's Award for Innovation in Technology back in 2005.

The Diary Of Soren Kierkegaard, by Soren Kierkegaard

Soren Kierkegaard, who was born in Denmark and died there at the age of forty-two, is regarded by many as the father of existentialist thinking. During his lifetime the Hegelian theologian he reacted against the Hegelian theologists in Denmark, denounced organized religion and held that the act of choice by an individual was all-important.

The Diary covers the important elements in Kierkegaard's life, including his childhood, his relations with his father, the influence of other writers on him, his broken engagement (which had a far-reaching effect on the rest of his life), and his celebrated quarrel with the Church.

Kierkegaard's writings are important because he is almost the first European writer to take a modern, analytical, psychological approach to religion. Proust, Joyce, and Aldous Huxley were only a few of the modern writers influenced by the Dane; and Jean-Paul Sartre's philosophy of existentialism is based on his thinking.

A MARVELOUS COLLECTION OF EXCERPTS FROM HIS DIARIES
By Steven H Propp
Kierkegaard (1813-1855) was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, social critic, and religious author, who was the first existentialist philosopher. He wrote many other books, including Philosophical Fragments, Fear & Trembling; The Sickness Unto Death, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Attack upon Christendom, The Concept of Irony, The Concept of Dread, Training in Christianity, Christian Discourses, Either/Or, etc.

He wrote in 1837, "Each person takes his revenge on the world. Mine consists in carrying my grief and anguish deeply embedded within myself, while my laughter entertains all. If I see somebody suffer I sympathize with him, console him to the best of my ability, and listen to him quietly when he assures me that I am fortunate. If I can keep this up to the day of my death I shall have had my revenge." (#15, Pg. 17-18)

He observes sardonically, "In former days a man derived self-importance by being born noble, rich, etc.; today we have grown more liberal, more `world-historical,' now all of us derive self-importance from being born in the 19th century---Oh, Thou marvelous 19th century! Oh, enviable lot!" (#23, pg. 20-21)

He points out, "It is an awful satire, and an epigram on the materialism of our modern age, that nowadays the only use that can be made of solitude is imposing it as a penalty, as jail. What a difference there is between those times when, no matter how secular materialism always was, man believed in the solitude of the convent, when, in other words, solitude was revered as the highest, as the destiny of Eternity---and the present when it is detested as a curse and is used only for the punishment of criminals. Alas, what a change." (#27, pg. 23)

He reveals, "Torn to pieces as I was inside, without any prospect of leading a humanly happy life here below... without any hope of a happy, cosy future---as most naturally results from and rests in the historical continuity of domestic family-life---what wonder that in despairing desperation I seized upon the intellectual side of man only and clung to it so closely that the thought of my considerable mental talents was my only consolation, ideas my only joy, human beings objects of indifference." (#39, pg. 31)

He contends, "If Hegel had written his entire Logic and said in the Preface that it was merely an idea-experiment for the sake of argument, wherein even in many places he had shirked something, he might well have been the greatest thinker that ever lived. As it is, he is comical." (#99, pg. 89)

He states, "If by means of research in the natural sciences something could be found that would help to define the concept of mind and spirit, I would be the first to acquire a microscope, and I hope I should be as persevering as anyone. However, as I easily perceive by qualitative dialectic that... the world will not have advanced another step in 100,000 years, I will do precisely the opposite: preserve my soul and not waste one second of my life on curiosity." (#116, pg. 96)

He explains, "I am accused of causing young people to acquiesce in subjectivity. Maybe, for a moment. But how would it be possible to eliminate all the phantoms of objectivity that act as an audience, etc., except by stressing the category of the separate individual. Under the pretext of objectivity the aim has been to sacrifice individualities entirely. That is the crux of the matter." (#121, pg. 101-102)

He argues, "Actually, a Reformation for the purpose of abolishing the Bible now would have a good deal more validity than Luther's abolition of the Pope. This thing about the Bible has developed religiosity in scholarly and legalistic circles, but merely as entertainment. A sort of `learning' in that field has gradually seeped down to the very lowest class, and no one any longer reads the Bible merely as an individual human being. But this way of reading it causes irreparable harm; it then comes to be a stronghold for apologies and evasions etc. in relation to LIVING, for there is constantly some reference one must look up, and always this sham that one must make sure the doctrine is in perfect shape before one can begin to live in accordance with it---which means that one never gets around to it. The Bible Societies, this insipid caricature of the Missions, a company which, just like any other business-company, works with money ... in just as worldly a way as other enterprises their wares: the Bible Societies have done irreparable harm." (#135, pg. 110-111)

He suggests, "Oh Socrates, Thou Noble Sage! Amid the crowd, surrounded by these thousands upon thousands, thou workest to split up `the herd' and seek out `the individual' that represents man's spiritual destiny. And Bernard [of Clairvaux] was a Christian, and it was in Christendom that it happened---and Socrates was a pagan---and yet there is more Christianity in the Socratic method than in the method of Saint Bernard." (#161, pg. 127)

He confesses, "It is true that I believe in forgiveness for our sins, but I understand it in this way: that I must bear my penalty as heretofore, which means that I must remain in the painful prison of my reserve to the end of my days, remote, in a deeper sense, from community with others---yet feeling my penalty attenuated by the thought that God has forgiven me. I cannot, at least not yet, rise so high in faith... that I can eliminate this painful memory by faith. By clinging to faith I ward off despair, bear the pain and penalty of my reserve---and am so indescribably happy or blissful in that activity of mind and spirit which God so plentifully and mercifully has vouchsafed me. (#167, pg. 132-133)

He laments, "My task is new in this sense that in the 1800th year of Christianity there is literally no one from whom I can learn how to go about it." (#179, pg. 147)

He asserts, "There is only one proof of the truth of Christianity: the inner proof... In the Epistle of St. John (1, 5, 9) this is hinted... It is not the reasons that motivate belief in the Son of God, but the other way round, belief in the Son of God constitutes the evidence." (#201, pg.164-165) He adds, "A dogmatic system should not be built on the basis of understanding faith, but on the basis of understanding that one cannot understand faith." (#202, pg. 165)

He proposes, "No, I would be tempted to make Christianity another proposition: Let us gather in every single copy of the New Testament, let us cart the whole collection out to an open place, or up a mountain top, and then, while all of us kneel down, let someone speak to God, saying: Take it back, this book; we humans, the way we are, should not get involved with such a book; it only makes us unhappy. Now, I suggest that... we ask Christ to take another road. That would be talking honestly and humanly---something else than this disgusting, hypocritical parson's twaddle about life being of no value to us without the invaluable boon of Christianity." (#216, pg. 177)

He adds, "Thus with the worship of God in Christianity. Man too has wings; he has imagination. It is meant to help him really to soar---but all we do is play, we let imagination entertain us in a quiet hour, in a Sunday reverie, and for the rest we stay as we were; then on Monday we regard it as God's grace that we grow plump, fat, tasty and put on an extra layer of yellow fat, save money, acquire prestige in the world, beget many children and are successful---all this we regard as proof of God's grace. But those who really get involved with God... suffer and look worried, have trouble, toil and affliction---of those we say: There, it is quite obvious that they don't enjoy the grace of God." (#217, pg. 178-179)

He concludes, "Christianity can be communicated only by witnesses, i.e. by men who existentially express what they proclaim, realize it in their lives." (#219, pg. 180)

This is a fascinating collection of excerpts from Kierkegaard's diaries, that will be "must reading" for anyone seriously studying Kierkegaard.

An excellent introduction to the life and thought of Kierkegaard
By Shalom Freedman
This Diary is an excellent introduction to the life and thought of Kierkegaard. Selections are made from Kierkegaard's ten- thousand page diary and placed in a rough chronological order. Interpersed are separate sections devoted to his Writing his view of Christianity and Christendom. Kierkegaard in the great share of his books used indirect methods of communication, in part because he did not want to preach to the reader. He rather wanted the reader to by thinking for himself come to the right conclusion.
In his diaries Kierkegaard was able to express his feelings and opinions more directly. He also in them wrote down his major ideas and worked them out. The Journals are the great mine from which he takes the materials for the books.
This Diary opens with a section on his Moods in Life. It has sections on his Childhood and his relation to his Father, on his reading of Paul Moller. The Corsair Affair also has a section of its own. The great turning point of Kierkegaard's life was his breaking of his engagement with Regine Olsen,of which he later said "Had I had faith I would have married Regine'. Its relation to his 'thorn in the flesh' is one of the most speculated upon questions in regard to a philosopher's life.
Kierkegaard was not only a writer of immense spiritual depth but also one of great irony and hidden humor.
These Diaries do give a sense of the real Kierkegaard.
They are accompanied by excellent explanatory notes.

what a great diary
By Beth
Well it isn't really a diary. It's more like reading his philosophy, but more intimate. Even though I like his philosophy, I preferred this the most. In this, he doesn't make subtle hints about his father and Regine. He completely bares his relationship with them and it's rather heartbreaking. Also
Kierkegaard has a fresh sarcastic wit that I wasn't expecting.

Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won.

Or should he have?

In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, offering a new interpretation of what it means to be discriminated against, or cope with a disability, or lose a parent, or attend a mediocre school, or suffer from any number of other apparent setbacks.

Gladwell begins with the real story of what happened between the giant and the shepherd boy those many years ago. From there, David and Goliath examines Northern Ireland's Troubles, the minds of cancer researchers and civil rights leaders, murder and the high costs of revenge, and the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful classrooms---all to demonstrate how much of what is beautiful and important in the world arises from what looks like suffering and adversity.

In the tradition of Gladwell's previous bestsellers---The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers and What the Dog Saw---David and Goliath draws upon history, psychology, and powerful storytelling to reshape the way we think of the world around us.

*Starred Review* Gladwell’s best-sellers, such as The Tipping Point (2000) and Outliers (2008), have changed the way we think about sociological changes and the factors that contribute to high levels of success. Here he examines and challenges our concepts of “advantage” and “disadvantage” in a way that may seem intuitive to some and surprising to others. Beginning with the classic tale of David and Goliath and moving through history with figures such as Lawrence of Arabia and Martin Luther King Jr., Gladwell shows how, time and again, players labeled “underdog” use that status to their advantage and prevail through the elements of cunning and surprise. He also shows how certain academic “advantages,” such as getting into an Ivy League school, have downsides, in that being a “big fish in a small pond” at a less prestigious school can lead to greater confidence and a better chance of success in later life. Gladwell even promotes the idea of a “desirable difficulty,” such as dyslexia, a learning disability that causes much frustration for reading students but, at the same time, may force them to develop better listening and creative problem-solving skills. As usual, Gladwell presents his research in a fresh and easy-to-understand context, and he may have coined the catchphrase of the decade, “Use what you got.” --David Siegfried

Review
"Truly intriguing and inspiring, especially when Gladwell discusses 'desirable difficulties'....Gladwell's account of the journey of Dr. Emil 'Jay' Freireich is unforgettable." ---Hector Tobar, Los Angeles Times

"Provocative....David and Goliath is a lean, consuming read....The book's most crafty, engaging chapter ties together the Impressionist movement and college choices to highlight the fact that gaining admission to elite institutions, which we typically perceive as an advantage, is no guarantee of success." ---John Wilwol, San Francisco Chronicle

"As always, Gladwell's sweep is breathtaking and thought-provoking....I've long admired Gladwell's work." ---Joe Nocera, New York Times

"David and Goliath readers will travel with colorful characters who overcame great difficulties and learn fascinating facts about the Battle of Britain, cancer medicine and the struggle for civil rights, to name just a few topics upon which Mr. Gladwell's wide-ranging narrative touches. This is an entertaining book." ---Christopher F. Chabris, Wall Street Journal

"Fascinating....Gladwell is a master of synthesis. This perennially bestselling author prides himself on radical re-thinking and urges the rest of us to follow suit." ---Heller McAlpin, Washington Post

"What propels the book, like all of Gladwell's writing, is his intoxicating brand of storytelling. He is the master of mixing familiar elements with surprise counter-intuitions, and then seasoning with a sprinkling of scientific evidence....Gladwell is a master craftsman, an outlier amongst authors." ---Rob Brooks, Huffington Post

"Gladwell sells books by the millions because he is masterful at explaining how the world works---the power of critical mass, the arbitrariness of success, etc.---packaging his ideas in fun, accessible, and poignant vignettes." ---Lionel Beehner, USA Today

"Gladwell's most provocative book yet. David and Goliath challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, drawing upon history, psychology, and powerful narrative talent to rethink how we view the world around us and how to deal with the challenges life throws at us." ---Susanne Jaffe, Columbus Dispatch

"The bestselling author behind the inventive Outliers, Blink, and The Tipping Point is back with another thought provoking theory that fascinates, entertains, and informs. He gives underdogs their due this time, challenging everything readers believe about facing-and conquering-life's stumbling blocks, using the 'real' story of David and Goliath and more to make his point." ---Celeste Williams, Fort Worth Star-Telegram

"Gladwell has made a career out of questioning conventional wisdom, and here he examines the allegedly unlikely triumph of the weak over the mighty and shows it's not so unlikely after all. 4 stars." ---Judith Newman, People Magazine

"The 50-year-old Canadian is a superstar, the most popular staff writer on The New Yorker and a hero in the frequent-flier lounge where journalism, social science, business management, and self-help hang out....It's a good story and he's got plenty more." ---Jeff Baker, The Oregonian

"Pop culture pundit Malcolm Gladwell is an idea blender, mixing concepts from vastly different sources (everything from business to science to the Bible) to produce new ways of seeing the world." ---Barbara O'Dair, Reader's Digest

"Engrossing.... Gladwell's singular gift is animating the experience of his subjects. He has an uncanny ability to simplify without being simplistic: clean and vivid Strunk and White prose in the service of peerless storytelling." ---David Takami, Seattle Times

"Contemporary society can't escape history when Malcolm Gladwell explains the world as he does with David and Goliath."---Jane Henderson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell explores the dynamics that inform and effect our everyday lives. By analyzing the Biblical account of the clash between David and Goliath, Gladwell presents a bold new interpretation of the lessons we should apply from it." ---Today Show

One Small Step for Gladwell, One Giant Leap for Superficial Analysis
By Michael I.
Malcolm Gladwell is the author most responsible for (guilty of?) popularizing the nonfiction genre we call behavioral science - the study of how forces outside our awareness influence our decisions big and small. Gladwell is motivated to prove commonly accepted notions about success are counterintuitive. Who succeeds and who fails, according to Gladwell, is largely a matter of chance and circumstance. In DAVID AND GOLIATH, the author widens (but not deepens) his exploration by examining Davids who rose to the status of Goliaths. It is Malcolm Gladwell's worst book.

Like Gladwell's previous work, the book is a collection of profiles connected thematically. Take a Hollywood producer whose childhood poverty spurred him to ambition, leading him to a fabulously wealthy lifestyle, a lifestyle the producer (and Gladwell) fear may be a detriment to his children since they won't have the same motivation. Or take a young, high-achieving high school student who aspired to study science as a career; she was accepted to Brown University, but quickly found herself demoralized because she was surrounded by fierce, moneyed competition - she never got to shine the way she would have at a lower tier school, so she left Brown and science behind.

It's a conclusion that is not only facile, it's a conclusion that is inaccurate on its face. Of course there are poor people who use their humble roots to launch themselves to great heights...but a rich kid is far more likely to have a fruitful, stable life than a poor kid. As for the big fish/small pond idea vis-à-vis Brown University, it is also nonsensical. If someone gets accepted to Brown and also the Duluth Community College, GO TO BROWN. Looking at it from a purely statistical angle, ten years after graduation, the profile of a Brown alum is vastly more desirable than a Duluth Community College alum.

Every single idea presented in this book fails under minimal scrutiny. It's not that they're purely false, it's that they're misguided or selectively presented.

An extra star is awarded due to the fluency of Gladwell's writing. It's mysterious how he's able to propel his prose forward so smoothly while inundating the reader with facts and abstract concepts. He's truly a talent, but he's a well-intentioned utopianist who bends his findings to conform to his yearning for how the world should work.

The Slipping Point
By Jim Muccio
David and Goliath, the Tortoise and the Hair, The Little Engine that Could... these are the stories we grew up with that spoke to us about overcoming the odds. As if somehow learning as a child that overcoming the odds was not only possible it was a good thing. When you're a kid with nothing to lose you might dream big…”This only goes to show what little people can do” to quote from the Musical Les Miserables. As we grew older we understood more deeply just how impossible overcoming the odds can be. To truly overcome the odds the reality of the “Kobayashi Maru Scenario” sets in. From Star Trek the Kobyashi Maru Scenario is the no-win scenario that cadets going through Starfleet Academy must face. Only one cadet ever won the Kobayashi Maru Scenario. That’s would be Captain James T. Kirk. How did he win? He cheated.

OK, for the most part, these “David and Goliath” tales of youth are fictional. Enter Malcolm Gladwell and his his forth is a series of winning titles starting with “The Tipping Point”, “Blink”, and then “Outliers”. Now Mr. Gladwell brings us “David and Goliath -- Underdogs, Misfits, and the art of Battling Giants”. He’s not coining a new phrase as he did with his other books. We all know the story of David and Goliath and we all know it’s about doing something that ought not be possible. Except instead of fiction, Mr. Gladwell brings us a series of real life accounts of underdogs prevailing against the mountain of odds stacked against them. These are real life David and Goliath stories as only Mr. Gladwell can tell them... deep, compelling, and poignant...his trademark. How did these underdogs prevail? In some sense they cheated. As Capt Kirk would say, “He changed the rules”. In all cases it’s about seeking advantage from the strengths you have, versus trying to capitalize on the traditional strengths that you will never have. And no matter how hard you wish for it, the odds will forever, not be in your favor. If you're a Hunger Games fan. So changing the rules of the game is always necessary. Only after the fact can one judge whether the ends justified the means…and that’s a very slippery ethical slope indeed. Mr. Gladwell stays away from the ethics of it all.

These real life “David and Goliath” stories stand well on their own, overcoming dyslexia, winning with a full court press in basketball, defeating childhood leukemia, prevailing in the race struggle in Birmingham Alabama, and outwitting the Nazi’s in Vichy France. And Mr. Gladwell brings them to us with epic and sometimes heart wrenching prose...tears were streaming down my face at least twice. He brings to us a different perspective on what’s necessary to win...and if an underdog does win, look closely, there’s always something else going on, and then sometimes...winning big might mean ultimately losing. This is where his attempt to bring too many stories together...with a single logical thread...seems to break down. Is he trying to say if you're an underdog you should cheat? Is he trying to say, maybe, we shouldn't win at all? That’s harder to tease out. The main premise however is that if you've grown up an underdog you have a hidden strength you can exploit...just because you've survived the adversity that makes you an underdog you must have some strength in you. And this is definitely an inspiring moment. Sadly, many more underdogs don’t survive to be those underdogs...and those huge overwhelming numbers don’t show up in the text. We only hear about the underdogs that win. David was the big winner and he rose to become a King. We don’t hear about the David’s that lost...and I can assure you there are many more of those loser Davids out there...countless loser Davids.

So in the end, Mr. Gladwell gives us something interesting to read, stories to tell, and true to his journalistic form, an extremely well written book. But he hasn’t given us the same game changing insights he brought forth in his earlier three works. This is only a must read for his fans, so I can’t give it five stars. And it is no where near the same book that is “The Tipping Point”, “Blink”, or “Outliers” so I will deduct another star. Three stars for “David and Goliath”, Mr. Gladwell may have reached a “Slipping Point” of his own. I hope he can recover.

Some Interesting Stories, but Not Quintessential Gladwell
By John C.
I generally enjoy Malcolm Gladwell's writing, and have read his other books. I've also heard him speak, watched his TED talk on "David and Goliath," and read recent interviews he's given about the book. I say all that, to make it clear that I'm a Gladwell fan, and wanted to love this book. Sadly, it's not a great read.

The title story is interesting, but I think the author would like for readers to be surprised by David's skill and ability. Most of what he writes about David will be pretty familiar to Christians who have been actively studied the Bible. Certainly nothing he said about David and/or Goliath was controversial, and most of it could be gleaned from the notes in a good Study Bible.

The stories that follow in the first section, and even the second section, are also interesting. It's thought-provoking to consider that a perceived disadvantage might spur a person on to do exceptional things. As the book continues on, the stories are less exceptional, and the premise less exciting.

For me, the book failed on three counts:
1. The stories used to illustrate Gladwell's point failed to consider the negative side. Yes, a percentage of people when faced with adversity overcome it, however, an overwhelming majority suffer greatly. For every successful businessperson with a learning disability, there are several more who are in menial jobs. The same is true of most of all the other examples in the book.
2. The examples given in the third section of the book were simply not compelling. Maybe an interesting newspaper or magazine article, but not compelling on a "Gladwell-ian" scale.
3. The author failed to connect the examples given into an obvious conclusion, and no effort was given to purport one for the reader. Maybe the weakness of the last section was the cause of this, but after I put the book down, my only thought was, "so what?"

Gladwell is still a fine story-teller, and I think he was on to something good here. It just didn't come together like it might have. If you're considering this book because you've heard about Malcolm Gladwell and this is his newest offering, I'd suggest reading Outliers or Tipping Point instead.

Great reference, needs better editing
By T. Nguyen
This book is comprehensive and has a lot information on A LOT of herbs. My biggest qualm with it is the editing. I keep finding typo after typo. Okay, maybe I've found like eight, but I have only read about 30 plant profiles in the whole book and they seem to pop up more and more. This matters when you are writing up information about plants and include Latin names, constituents and herbal actions. Spelling matters. I like the book and find the spelling errors forgivable. It's good that I have a few other books to cross reference the spelling. Or I can use the internet.
Some of my other herb books, that are written by more well-known herbalists give completely opposite information, mostly in areas regarding the moisture of the plant or its temperature. Hard to say who's right and plants can have opposite effects on two different people.
If you can only buy a few books on herbal medicine, I wouldn't choose this one. Although, I personally like it and use it. I would have given this book 3.5 stars but I rounded up because I have a few herbs books that I bought and never use. At least this one comes off the shelf.

By Amelie K Morgan
Admittedly, I am not educated in this type of science, and while this appears to be a very thorough guide, there are no photos or illustrations of the herbs described. Of course, I can use the internet for this end, but had I known the book completely lacked photos and/or illustrations, I would not have purchased this volume. That said, I'm sure its value and use will prove itself with time.

Varanasi, by M.T.Vasudevan Nair

Women of character and strength, reveal his failings, one by one. And, Sudhakaran runs; from village to town, from town to city and city to city. The city now is Varanasi. This ancient city reminds him of all that it stands for—dharma, lust and death—and that there is no place where one can hide one’s mistakes. Of all places one cannot hide in Varanasi, where memories hold the city together; and, where Kalabhairavan, astride his fierce dog, punishes everyone before salvation.
Varanasi, in his trademark austere writing style, is Jnanpith laureate M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s latest novel. Non-linear and set through the protagonist’s reminiscences, this novel is MT’s experiment in style. The narrative is in the unusual ‘alternating person view’, where the narrator smoothly shifts between the first, second and third person. Complemented by a steady stream of paradoxes and allusions, legends and parallel realities, this novel makes for an engaging read.
Translated by Sahitya Akademi award winner N. Gopalakrishnan, this work is laced with the flavours of the original Malayalam, even as its protagonist leaves his native far behind and for too long. However, Sudhakaran and other etched characters of Varanasi are here to stay, for a long time to come—like the grand old city itself.
