About the Author
Janette K. Klingner, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Before earning her doctorate in reading and learning disabilities from the University of Miami, she was a bilingual special education teacher for 10 years in California and Florida. Dr. Klingner is a co-principal investigator for the National Center for Culturally Responsive Educational Systems, and recently was an investigator for the Center on Personnel Studies in Special Education. She has authored or edited 49 journal articles, 9 books, and 14 book chapters. Her research interests include reading comprehension strategy instruction for diverse populations, overrepresentation of culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education, and special education teacher quality. She is past Coeditor of the "Review of Educational Research "and an Associate Editor of the "Journal of Learning Disabilities," In 2004 Dr. Klingner received the American Educational Research Association's Early Career Award for outstanding research.
Sharon Vaughn, PhD, holds the H. E. Hartfelder/Southland Corp. Regents Chair in Human Development at the University of Texas at Austin and has served as the Editor in Chief of the "Journal of Learning Disabilities "and the Coeditor of "Learning Disabilities Research and Practice," She has received the American Educational Research Association's Special Education Special Interest Group Distinguished Researcher Award and has written numerous books and research articles that address the reading and social outcomes of students with learning difficulties. Dr. Vaughn is currently the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on several Institute ofEducation Sciences, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and Office of Special Education Programs research grants investigating effective interventions for students with reading difficulties and students who are English language learners.
Alison Boardman, PhD, is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in special education and educational psychology. She works with school districts and state departments across the United States to plan and implement effective professional development in reading. Dr. Boardman is also a consultant for the Vaughn Gross Center for Reading and Language Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests include struggling readers, providing effective professional development, and collaboration among general education and special education teachers, and she has published research articles on these topics in leading journals. Dr. Boardman also has many years of experience as a special education teacher in elementary and middle schools.

Mediocre - not very insightful

Just finished reading the book - it's a very quick read. Unfortunately, I didn't find the book all that insightful. It does a good job of explaining how DMB really has to be experienced in a live setting vs. listening to a CD; and does a good job of describing how this band's performances have emotionally touched fans through the shared experience. However all of this is conveyed in a few pages, and the rest of the book becomes extremely redundant. Non-fans won't really get it without attending a show; and fans already get it anyway. There is no new or insightful information on the band or it's history - the author's lack of access to the band is very apparent, and she relies on published articles or interviews for information as opposed to firsthand interviews with the band members.

Save your money, go to the super fan website (ants marching) and read some of the threads - you'll get a more direct connection with the fan experiences (or better yet, go to a show).

Fun read

Received the book in the mail about a week ago (living in Berlin, Germany) and have thus far read the first two chapters. As a die-hard fan for 15 yrs., I enjoyed them a lot. Some so far isn't new, lots is though! I am excited whats to come in the remaining chapters. Highly recommended to anyone who's fascinated by this band, to me creators of some of the most ambitious music around!

"Nothing" To Say

I was exceptionally eager to read this book assuming that a relatively well-credentialed writer might actually produce a work worthy of covering DMB; however, I was stunned at the continual redundancy and commentary that any mainstream or novice fan would have observed within the first hour of watching or listening to them. Nor was it in any way, as stated several times throughout the novel, a reflection of a conglomerate group of fans - most quoting was simple, superfluous, vapid, non-informative babble by a few of the early associates and a fan here or there but it certainly did not meet the standard the reader was invited to expect. The photos were great I will say but quite frankly, the writing, at best, was primitive, lackluster and void of information and color any fan or non-fan would expect. I found it interesting that in an interview several weeks ago that Mr. Matthews said in response to a question about this new book that he really couldn't comment as he didn't even KNOW about it whereas the writer implied that she had quite a longstanding history with the band - hardly an insider as the reader is led to believe. I'm sure the author is a very nice lady - but, she really should stick to the Washington Post where no doubt, her style of no substance is much more appreciated. If you want to know more or learn about the Dave Matthews Band, I'd suggest you obtain a ticket and run to the nearest venue. And if this book should appear on a vendor table, run right on by.

Making math too fun to resist

This is an incredible book- really more of an activity center. My three year old absolutely loves it and the paper engineering is gorgeous. The book consists of many pages of pop-up illustrations and countless cards to explore different facets of numbers, shapes and introductory time skills. Text for adults gives suggestions on how to use the materials. My son adores the number stencils and especially the "pop-up die"- it pops into a 3" cube. It goes along with the simplest board game ever invented. You roll the die, and move your animal game-piece that number of spaces. Then the animals can come in "first", "second", or "third". There are countless cards: colored shapes to arrange into designs, and 2-D vs 3-D shapes too. Some cards have numbers 1-10, or domino dots to count. You can sort them into order, or use them for elementary equation excercises too. There are rudimentary counting games. For example, the two lilly pads. There are three frogs on one pad, move one to the other pad and two remain. For more advancved children there are sets of basic equations presented as a sort of pop-up book slide rule. There is also a cool teaching clock- as you rotate the hour hand, each number turns from white to red, the digital clock read-out shows below too. There are cards with the days of the week, and with pictured activities that occur at different times of the day. There is even a section with number rhymes to learn. This book is exciting and fun for my three year old and will continue to provide him with challanges as he grows and learns. I can't believe it...what a deal.

Cute book!

I purchased this for my son's fourth birthday and he loves reading it. Puppy Birthday to You is a Little Golden Book about the Paw Patrol team planning a surprise birthday party for Chase. The power goes out while they are trying to bake a cake and the pups go out to fix the problem. They discover that the windmill is broken so Marshall, Rocky, and Ryder set about fixing it so that it can spin and produce electricity. Chase directs traffic while the power is out and Skye, Zuma, Rubble, and Katie set up Chase's surprise party. The Paw Patrol saves the day by getting the power back on and still manage to surprise Chase for his birthday. My son enjoys showing us pictures in the book and telling us about his favorite characters and the things that they do. I love it when a book can get my little ones excited about reading!

Paw Patrol! Puppy Birthday to You; another classic Golden Book Adaptation

I bought this for my 4 yr old son who has been watching Paw Patrol for quite awhile and is a huge fan. Like with any Golden Book adaptation, the story is well done but simple enough for short attention spans, is well illustrated, and really makes the Paw Patrol characters shine. The story length is just right with nice vivid color illustration with the classic gold "Little Golden Books" binding.

Another great hit in the Golden Book lineup of Paw Patrol books, and one that little ones will love to read over and over (which is already happening here!) Go Paw Patrol!

Must have book for my little Paw Patrol fan's 3rd Birthday!

Puppy Birthday to You is such a cute story! This was a must have for my son’s Paw Patrol themed Birthday! He just turned 3 and is CRAZY about Paw Patrol! He wants to read this story every night. On the back of the book there are other Paw Patrol stories that he points to and says “we need to get these stories too!”

The quality of the book is just like any other Little Golden book! Well binded, cardboard cover with paper pages. At 3 years old, my son still tears things up when left in his bedroom unsupervised. For that reason we keep this book where he can’t get to it. As long as we continue to do so, I expect this book to last many years!

Brief Simple Introduction To Netduino Open Source C# Platform

The writing is clear and succinct. In this brief tutorial which simplifies its content, it is impossible to appreciate the full power of a platform that allows Object Oriented Programming, as well as Event-Based code, and which permits Multi-threading, Sockets and HTTP access to the Internet. Good start but needs updating.

I wrestled with how many stars to give this. At points I was going to give it 2 stars. The problem is this book is seriously out of date which could give beginners a great deal of angst as none of the project code in the book work as is and require knowledge to fix/rewrite that many beginners won't have and there is no corrections file online that I have found. Yes there is a good forum at the Netduino site where you can request support - and they will answer your questions (even the author chips in), which is why I ended up giving the book 4 stars. But you will need to request support on each experiment. I'm a beginner with C#.Net , having done much VB.NET development, and haven't played with microprocessors in many years, so I did find this hard going and have yet to get some of the later experiments to work after a few weeks of tinkering.

Perfect for Getting Started

If your getting started with Netduino, this book is the ideal place to begin. As others have mentioned if you have an interest in Netduino than you'll certainly out-grow this book, but it lays a great foundation.

If your a beginner this book won't bore you to death with the nitty gritty, but you'll learn what you need to know. If you already have experience with Netduino, there is a decent chance that you'll still learn something but you won't be bored to death with beginner info on how to program.

Humane, beautifully written, smart, thoughtful

I've read a lot of academic work on loneliness, and the sterility of such work amazes me. This book stands out in its passionate and personal tone--and in its focus on how loneliness can help people grow. ("I realized that man's inevitable and infinite loneliness is not solely an awful condition of human existence but that it is also the instrument through which man experiences new compassion and new beauty"--p. x in 1961 edition). The writing style is unusual, and may not be for everyone, but Moustakas' tone deeply affected my read of the book, and in my opinion, is one of the book's many strengths. It is a philosophical treatise that can help illuminate the assumptions in shallow self-help books. Obviously, I highly recommend it.

Compassionate & rich

Written long before the flood of shallow self-help books that engulf us today, this slim volume remains one of the finest explorations of loneliness I've ever read. More philosophy than psychology -- a meditation on the state of loneliness -- it's written in a personal tone, one that invites the reader into a warm circle of understanding. There's nothing maudlin or cheaply sentimental here, no superficial quick fixes or allegedly spiritual steps to follow. It's written to make you think as deeply as you feel, to look at loneliness clearly, and to enable you to recognize the loneleness of others -- which is not unlike our own, is it?

Again, if you're used to contemporary self-help books, you may be startled to find this is nothing like them. It's written for intelligent, thoughtful human beings who are willing to give up the comforting womb of ego & self-pity, and discover something worthwhile & meaningful in the cold darkness that often surrounds us. The more you read it, the more you realize that the last thing in the world it's about is, "me, me, me." But it may well help you to discover You -- a more mature You, a little closer to wholeness than before. It definitely deserve to be in print once more -- highly recommended!
