5 Stars for Information, 1 Star for Communication

I would recommend this book to geology grad students, advanced chemistry majors, the many PhDs, post-docs, and professors whose research is mentioned, and people who are willing to stop often, do some outside research, figure out exactly what the author is saying, think about how it fits with the rest of the book, and continue reading. I would not recommend it to the proverbial “intelligent layman”–even if that person had some background in chemistry and biology and geology. If you think the word diagenetic (which Canfield uses without definition) has something to do with the double helix, this book is probably not for you.

Canfield really knows his stuff. There is an awful lot here about how much oxygen was in the earth’s atmosphere when, and what processes might be responsible.

But, OMG, there are so many problems with the writing and organization. Orson Scott Card’s one star review is unfair (it is NOT easy to make all this information “entertaining and absolutely clear”) but his statement about “telling things way out of order and assuming knowledge that most readers won't have” rings true. Canfield needs to explain things early, in a way that readers can understand and use for the rest of the book. E.g.,what does it mean to say “sulfate is reduced to pyrite” and why does it matter?; what is the difference between ferrous and ferric iron and why does it matter? This one made me crazy: On pages 89 and 90 (out of 158) are a series of paragraphs about the chemistry of iron. “To understand this,” he begins, “we need to know something about the chemistry of iron (Fe).” But he’s been talking about iron reactions for a good deal of the last 89 pages–as if we not only know something about the chemistry of iron but know a lot! Why the bleep are these paragraphs more than halfway through the book?

It IS hard to write a book like this. You have to make lots of decisions about what ideas to introduce when, and how much detail to go into. Canfield has chosen poorly for people who aren’t “in the business.” Reading the epilogue, which is sort of a summary earth history, I wondered how much better the book could have been if he had started with this, suitably expanded and explained: “what I think happened”–and devoted the rest of the book to what the research says: “why I think it happened.”

Distracted by the academic chit-chat

I found Canfield's obsession with inclusion of academic chit-chat and academic crediting in the text to be distracting, not endearing as he perhaps intended. I spent years in academia and I understand it is important to give out atta-boys and atta-girls, but not in the middle of the story. Save it for publication in specialist academic journals where such score keeping really matters and keep it in footnotes in a book like this aimed at a wider audience. For an example, see p. 43 and the digression on hotel repairs by his mentor Dave Des Marais.

A glossary would have been helpful, too. I've also been reading Nick Lane's book on oxygen for an overlap in coverage, which is a much more no-nonsense style of writing.

A weak attempt to explain flow

I bought this book after having spent a couple of years learning lean at a company that does it pretty well. I didn't feel as if true flow was being implemented, and was hoping to find some knowledge that only highly experienced consultants could give from years spent at multiple sites. This book disppointed me greatly in my expectations. The way the authors deal with flow is on the surface at best. They talk of taking timings, but don't give details on how to do it well (like leave the stopwatch running so as not to lose observations). They fail to discuss movements of the operator that add to lack of flow. Instead they focus on "cells" that are created where there are piles of WIP between stations. Well, no kidding, they didn't get flow implemented. The book leaves you with the feeling of not having really gotten the whole story, and wondering if this was just a Lean Enterprise attempt at getting you to buy the next book they can come up with meant to answer all unanswered questions.
Stick to Learning to See as far as I'm concerned and move on to other authors.

Top 10 Lean Books

After reading approximately 30 "Lean" books, I reached a point where I was finding only a few new ideas from each book -- and I felt I knew as much or more than the author on some covered topics as well. But every once in a while, I read something that pushes me down to a "student" level, opening my eyes wider than before, and realizing how much of a lean journey lies ahead of me... that is what "Creating Continuous Flow" did to me. This book confirmed my understanding of key concepts such as takt time, total work content, and line balancing; but it also filled me with new knowledge on topics such as work distribution (e.g. "splitting the work" versus "the circuit") and building to pitch. And I use the guidelines for cell layout, machines, and materials management with each and every kaizen event. Although the book lacks an index and glossary that would help referencing the material (and it's Table of Contents is not detailed enough to be useful), the authors (Mike Rother and Rick Harris) do a fantastic job in simplifying the tactics of implementation while packing the short book (about 100 pages) with useful lean information. This is one of my top 10 Lean books, and I give the "red book" 5 stars -- highly recommended!

A Great Book!

This book is even better than Learning to See. There is much more detail about how to implement in-cell improvements. You are not doing LEAN until you start doing what this book teaches. I was able to start applying the principles immediately. This book shows you a practical, detailed, direct approach that is easier to understand and apply than the more theoretical LEAN Thinking and Machine that Changed the World.

About the Author
Diane Larsen-Freeman is Professor Emerita of Education, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, and Former Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is also a Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dr. Larsen-Freeman has been a conference speaker in over 60 countries of the world and has published over 100 articles in her areas of interest. Her Heinle/Cengage titles include "The Grammar Book: Form, Meaning, and Use for English Language Teachers" (third edition, 2015, co-authored with Marianne Celce-Murcia), "From Grammar to Grammaring" (2003, authored), and the fourth edition of "Grammar Dimensions: Form, Meaning, and Use" (2007, Series Director). From 1980-1985, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was Editor of the journal "Language Learning." In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was selected by ESL Magazine as one of "the ESL pioneers." In 2000, she received the lifetime achievement award from Heinle & Heinle.

Excellent tool in the fight against prescriptivism and learning by rote

This book is a breath of fresh air. First, it constantly challenges the reader to reassess their own view of language and the impact of that view on the way they teach. Second, it provides an approach to teaching that does not rely on grammar drills and rote memorization, a paradigm that is far too prevalent and almost always proves boring and disheartening to both teacher and student. The book gives me hope that language teaching practices and curriculum can continue to evolve to better serve the malleability of language itself.

Ms. Larsen-Freeman is not content to review past theories and pedagogical practices. Instead, she reminds us that language theories are constantly evolving, as is language itself. It is difficult to find one narrow definition of language and an associated teaching practice that will suffice. Grammar is more than a list of rules to memorize; the author introduces the idea of "grammaring," an idea of grammar as more dynamic and constantly evolving. Thus, the way we teach grammar (and language as a whole) should reflect that.

However, in addition to shunning rote memorization teaching practices, Larsen-Freeman also cautions against the opposite extreme, which is disavowing all formal grammar instruction in favor of a more organic method based on models of real life language acquisition. She reminds us that language teaching should not just mimic natural language acquisition, but augment and accelerate it, and formal instruction of grammatical structures--when taught with proper appreciation of their dynamic properties--does play a strong role in teaching language.

I recommend this book to anyone just starting off in the fields of language teaching or language acquisition, as well as anyone who is frustrated with outdated teaching practices and arbitrary prescriptivism.

Understanding Grammar

This book doesn't provide grammar activities or explain grammar rules. What you will get is an understanding of what grammar really is. Grammar is not just the rules that your English teacher taught you back in high school. It is much more than rules. This book presents how grammar is viewed through Second Language Acquisition Theory. Also the author dismisses some common preconceptions about grammar that may be holding teachers back from understanding what grammar really is--a dynamic process. To gain a better understanding of this process, I recommend that teachers pick up this book. It's not so thick, so it should be a quick read.

I took the course (online) and realized that there was so much more detail that I wanted to know. This is where I will get it. The entries answer precisely the questions I have had. There are many fine points, nuances and distinctions that are difficult to understand without further explanation. This book provides that guidance.

About the Author
Nicole Burnham is originally from Colorado, but as the daughter of an Army dentist, grew up travelling the world. After obtaining both a law degree and a master's in political science, she settled into what she thought would be a long, secure career as an attorney. That long, secure career lasted only a year. Faced with a lifetime of writing stale legal briefs, Nicole soon decided she was better suited to the adventure of writing romance. Nicole now resides in Massachusetts. When she's not writing, she enjoys spending time with her family, babying her rose garden, and travelling-the more exotic the locale, the better. Nicole loves to hear from readers. The Knight's Kiss

I love this series of books. The back story was great and I loved that Isabella got her HEA. Nick was just perfect for her since he lived the history that she loved so much. The interactions between them were so easy that you want them just to stop fighting their feelings.

It was also great to catch up with the other characters from the first two books. Don't miss this story.

A charming fairy-tale type story

Nick Black has been around for centuries. He had been a knight during medieval times, in the small country of San Rimini. He had been cursed by a witch when he refused to help a young boy in need because he thought his mission for the King far more important then a peasant child's life. His curse left him to wander the Earth, never aging until he learned the importance of sacrificing for the benefit of another.

Princess Isabella of San Rimini has a pet project she needs help with. Her mother's dream, before her death, had been to have a museum display of San Rimini historical artifacts. Isabella intends to see her mother's dream realized and needs Nick's help. For he is the expert on San Rimini history, though none know the real reason for that... that he had lived it all. She comes to the US where he lives the life of a recluse, except for a couple close associates, to hopefully hire Nick to work on her project.

Nick refuses at first, fearing the attention and publicity from the media. He can't let anyone discover his secret and turn him into a scientific experiment. When Isabella agrees to all of his conditions, and agrees to give him full access to all artifacts, he can't refuse. He had spent the past 800 years collecting documents and artifacts, hoping to find something... anything... that will lead him to the witch who cursed him, and a way to break it.

What Nick never counted on was falling in love with Isabella and she with him. Now he has even more to fear - how would she react to finding out about his curse? Does he stay with her and risk her hatred bound to develop once she realizes the full impact of his curse? Or does he leave San Rimini and Isabella to protect his secret? Will his curse ever be broken so he can finally find peace?

Ms. Burnham continues her San Rimini Royal Family miniseries with this pleasant tale. She shows her talent for spinning a sweet story, full of love and joy that many people live to experience. She expands a little more on the family in this book, and the reader gets the chance to visit with characters from past books, and some who likely will be getting their own story before too long.

Nick and Isabella are a good couple and Nick's turmoil is believable. He may have started out as a man committed to one thing, his King, but that changes as through time he learns he must learn to care more about other things, and people, if he ever hopes to break the curse and live a normal life. In a way, Isabella is like him - dedicated to her country, family, and causes, above all else, even herself. She had forgotten how to just live, experiencing life for the sheer joy it brings. Together, they learn to live again, experiencing happiness, as they had never really known it before.

This book has everything lovers of romance novels want. There is a fine story fully realized, plenty of charming and endearing characters, a little bit of adventure, a touch of fantasy, and of course the key elements - love and romance. This book was this reviewer's first read by Nicole Burnham, but it intrigued her enough to want to seek out the rest of the series as well.

Marvelous paranormal! Very highly recommended

In 1163 a knight entrusted with the King's business, Domenico di Bollazio Black stood at a turning point that would transform his life. Rather than going back to save a child, he decides to keep to his schedule and fulfill his mission for the King. But when the boy's red headed mother stops him, she leaves him with a curse of immortality. The curse can only be broken if he can learn to sacrifice himself for others. In the current century he calls himself Nick Black, living the life of an eccentric hermit and searching for records of the woman who could free him of his eternal life.
Princess Isabella diTalora seeks Nick out personally, having heard remarkable recommendations from other historicists in the field. Little does she suspect he was born in San Rimini and has walked the same halls as she, albeit 800 years ago. Isabella intends to finish a historical project begun by her mother, and she needs Nick's help cataloging a huge collection of artifacts and historical documents currently gathering dust in the royal palace. Fulfilling such a request affords Nick the opportunity to examine hereto unrecorded documents that might hold the clues to his quest. It also presents his greatest challenge yet: not acting on his attraction to the princess.
Readers who enjoy a touch of the paranormal will treasure Nicole Burnham's THE KNIGHT'S KISS. In this mesmerizing novel, Burnham demonstrates a remarkable gift for transforming the improbably into something absolutely believable. Nick's understanding of Isabella's need for anonymity provides the perfect date, and an amusing outcome. As their relationship develops, it is at once tender and endearing. Readers will delight in this paranormal, even as it takes a sharp departure from the glitter casinos of Burnham's previous work.
