Difficult, but a real treasure

This second volume of the Laws of the Icelanders has now become available nearly a quarter of a century after Volume I appeared. Sadly, that first volume has now gone out print, although from taking with the publisher, I understand a new edition of Volume I will soon be ready.

Great news, because together these are tremendously important documents. They not only give wonderful insights into the medieval world, but also hold the seeds of much of English law that in turn would find its way into the quirky American legal system. If you believe legalistic thinking is a kind of insanity that often goes against common sense, you'll find lots of proof in these "Viking" laws, that seem to cover every possible worry of medieval man -- how a whale is to be divided, the punishment for composing unflattering poems, the fine for kissing someone else's wife, how murder is to be reported, and so forth. Eighty-year-olds slipping off and marrying without the permission of their kids was apparently a big enough problem that a special set of laws had to be made to cover that situation. There was one fine for a poke in the nose, another for a kick in the testicles.

Being a collection of laws, however, they're not easy reading and probably will need to be taken in small doses of a page or two at a time and thought about -- much like Donne's poetry, say. Many of the laws require some real untangling to be understood at all, while the meaning of others has likely been lost forever.

Just the same, the translators have done a super job of making the laws accessible. They've grouped them logically and provide plenty of footnotes for assistance, along with a dictionary of technical terms and a glossary with the original Icelandic vocabulary.

Obviously these are scholarly works meant for a specialized audience, but that audience should certainly extend to everyone in the legal profession and everyone with an interest in the Middle Ages, especially those who would hope to fully understand the Icelandic Sagas. Actually, anyone who likes to read should enjoy skimming these volumes. Even if you can't afford to own them yourself, you should encourage your local library to have them. They are priceless.

A treasure trove of interesting information

Like all legal codes, this is not an easy read. This is made all the more difficult by the attempts to leave some of the technical vocabulary intact in the manuscript. One often has to get the sense of how everything fits together to understand a given regulation (for example, the idea that one can have meadowland rights on someone else's property). At the same time, of course, leaving this technical side intact makes the book more useful.

This being said the book is an amazing treasure-trove of information. There are sections in this volume which deal with dog bites, tame polar bears, divorce, remarriage, and torts involving interfering with a marriage. The Icelanders had some sense of something like community property though it was not evenly divided (2/3rds of the community property belonged to the husband).

Moreover the sense of legal protections for vulnerable persons was very different in this system. For example, an individual has a right to search for stolen property on the land or in the houses of others with a band of up to 30 men, none of whom are free to refuse to help, but a search area must be contiguous, so all farms in between two suspects must also be searched. This seems to help reducing abuse by inconveniencing those who are legally required to render judgement (clearing verdicts done by a panel of five neighbors). Similarly, upon getting married, a man had to pay a "bride-price" to his bride, and if they divorced, she was entitled to keep this money. This was her money and not part of the community property.

Understanding how different societies solved social problems is immensely interesting in its own right but it is also important. By looking to how other cultures looked at issues, we are better prepared to look at the problems in our own time with a new set of eyes. This can be of help in understanding the social diseases of our day.

Great Bread Made Easy!

I have been baking most of the bread that my family eats for more than 50 years. Even though I bake loaves just one or two at a time now that I live alone instead of the half-dozen at a go three times a week that I once produced, baking my own bread is something I still enjoy, it is still the single easiest thing that I know of to do to save a big bundle of money on your grocery bill and I'm still always on the look-out for new recipes and new ways of doing things.

Back in early May I acquired a little Kindle sampler for the not-yet-available-in-the-US cookbook companion to the British TV show, "Food, Glorious Food." As luck would have it, even though episodes of "Food, Glorious Food" are available on the BBC website, you cannot watch them from this side of the pond. Youtube came to my rescue and while I was watching episodes of "Food, Glorious Food" I also discovered an episode or two of "Paul Hollywood's Bread", also from the BBC. (I'll put the link to one in the comments for you.)

Paul Hollywood knows how to bake bread and he is very good at teaching too. Paul Hollywood's Bread contains the recipes from the show. It's been out in the UK for a bit, but only just made it to this side of the pond a few days ago.

Paul Hollywood's mission is not to teach baking to people who will be professional bakers, but to ordinary folk who have perhaps never even thought of baking bread. That focus shows in Paul Hollywood's Bread. You'll find no baker's formulas here and no kitchen math either. Pictures illustrating various techniques are frequent, large and well captioned. Directions are clear. The photography is mouthwatering - a full page picture for every recipe. Interestingly, while most US bread recipes call for a set amount of liquid and a variable amount of flour, Hollywood's recipes are exactly backwards - a set amount of flour and a variable amount of liquid.

The book includes recipes for thirty different breads, many of them unusual, each followed by a recipe that uses the bread initially produced to make something else - a Grilled Vegetable Picnic Loaf, an unusual topping for a beef stew, a Limoncello Trifle. (Lemons are in season and inexpensive right now, my fridge is full of them, so the Sicilian Lemon and Orange Sweet Bread is underway in my kitchen.)

Recipes are divided into six chapters - Classic Breads, Soda Breads, Flatbreads, Continental Breads, Sourdough and Enriched Breads. Each chapter contains recipes and techniques for five different breads. The top of my list tip - Paul's method for producing perfect Ciabatta. Most recipes call for no special equipment of any kind. Only one or two even require a loaf pan.

Most recipes make just one loaf of bread. Thankfully, nobody has been at Paul Hollywood's Bread to "edit it for the US market", something that invariably leads to confusion and mistakes. Thus, ingredients are given in metrics and teaspoons/tablespoons (the same ones that we use). You will need a digital scale that measures in grams if you do not already own one. Liquid measures in ml are on one side of your Pyrex glass measuring cup (they've been there for a couple of decades or so, you probably just haven't noticed) as well as most other liquid measuring vessels sold in the US these days.

Baking temperatures are given in Celsius rather than the Fahrenheit used here in the US. If you have a fairly new stove with digital controls, you may be able to use either, but if you are like most of us, conversions will be needed. Luckily, nearly all of the bread recipes in the book bake at 220C, equal to 425F (rounded off to the nearest multiple of 25, just as our ovens are.) Other temps you need to know are

180C = 350F
200C = 400F

A few other translations that you may find in order -

strong flour - bread flour
plain flour - all purpose flour
caster sugar - superfine sugar (sometimes labeled bartender's sugar)
black treacle - dark molasses

Hollywood's recipes call for the same sort of instant yeast that I use in my kitchen. (I prefer Saf Instant Yeast) I find buying an entire pound far more economical than buying individual packets. Unused yeast can simply be stored in a container in the fridge for about a year or frozen indefinitely. Single packs are usually available at health food stores and co-ops, where you will also find the malt syrup called for in a couple of recipes.

Fantastic book, great instructions for novices!

I love this book! It has helped my 11 year old daughter get really into making bread. The directions are very clear and she can follow the steps all on her own without my needing to help. I also love the included meal suggestions. It's a great way to learn to plan and prep bread as part of a whole meal plan, and I like the philosophy around that that Paul talks about. There are great photos showing the steps, and he talks about what the purpose behind all the steps are at the very beginning of the book. The orange and chocolate brioche recipe is to die for! My daughter made that (also all on her own) and we could not stop cutting ourselves just one more small slice

Not a bad book - has some good recipes

Not a bad book - has some good recipes, but I think there are much better Bread books out there. Not that I'm an expert in any way, but I'm past 80 and have been cooking and baking for a lot of years. I still make bread 1-2 times a week, and also make Sourdough bread and biscuits on a regular basis.

Why we still have safety issues with lithium batteries?

After 50 years of Lithium Battery Technology usage in research and development programs, and significant commercialization, we still continue to have safety incidents as the technology evolves and is used in new applications. This book was printed in1994. Today, April 16, 2013, I write the "first" review. Why we still have safety issues with lithium batteries? Sadly we do not learn and share our knowledge. I am including myself in this assessment. I could have referenced this book in a paper I wrote back in 2007. I made a mistake, which I hope I can start to correct post the GM Volt and Boeing 787 fires.

This book is a "must" for all serious professionals in the power sources community at government labs, battery manufacturers, research institutes, universities, systems integrators, etc. We can prevent the next safety incident by understanding the valve this reference book provides. It should have been a reference on the NTSB site not the wikipedia version of lithium-ion batteries.

Second time around

Most of the story is about Hayle finding love with an Irishman. Then he has massive heart failure and she is left alone. She meets Nick the nerd and he is still upset about her treatment of him in high school. They overcome this when they finally talk and a romance develops. Hayle grows up and learns what love really is. A good romantic story but needing editing. All three books need to be read together as the first was cut off from the story.

My rating was good because this book told a modern day story with just the right amount of the things I look for in a book. Feel good characters, compassion, a somewhat realistic story and it made me feel good after reading the book.

About the Author
Olly Richards speaks eight languages and is the man behind the popular blog: I Will Teach You A Language. He started learning his first foreign language at age 19, when he bought a one-way ticket to Paris to escape a painful breakup. An impressive reader for Italian learners

Writing a book of short stories for beginner or early-stage Italian learners is not an easy task. First of all, the Italian needs to be simplified so it is accessible to beginners, which involves both an astute choice of vocabulary, and a good understanding of grammatical challenges faced by learners at different levels. Most Italian readers shy away from the task of simplifying, and you end up with long, complex books that may be well-written, but are all but useless to people just starting out with the language, as they are far too overwhelming. The difficulty for authors is that in simplifying the language, the writing may lose points on literary style. So let's be clear... this book won't be winning any prizes for literature, but it is extremely effective for the purpose it sets out to achieve - stories for Italian learners that will get you reading, that you will be able to understand, and that will help you grow your vocabulary.

Secondly, you have to make the stories entertaining, so the reader actually wants to pick up the book and keep reading. Again not an easy task (most books fail badly on this point). In the introduction to the book, the author explains his rationale behind the creation of the stories, which (in a nutshell) is that the most important part of any book is that it is interesting enough for you to want to read it. If you are motivated to read, you will learn. Likewise, if the book is boring, you won't read it, and therefore won't learn anything, no matter how good the book is. So the success of this book of short stories should be judged primarily on the extent to which it captures your imagination and makes you want to read. With the exception of one story (which was rather far-fetched), I found all the stories in the book surprisingly entertaining, and I genuinely wanted to read to the end of them all.

So far, so good. If the author had simply written some entertaining stories in simple Italian and stopped there, that would already be a good achievement. However, what I liked most of all, and what ultimately makes this book so effective for Italian learners, is the inclusion of reading aids throughout the book. These aids do a fantastic job of helping the reader process the stories by explaining key vocabulary and checking understanding of the events in the plot - vital when you are not yet a confident reader, so that you do not get overwhelmed.

It is worth pointing out that the book is not really suitable for complete beginners (despite the title), as you will simply not have enough vocabulary to follow what is going on. There is also the occasional choice of words which is rather advanced for beginners' book, although the problem is not widespread. However, overall, I commend the author for producing a book which I believe will help many people get a start in reading Italian, and taking steps forward in the language. Highly recommended.

Ottimo! Great way to take your Italian to the next level

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in coming to grips with Italian in a fun, motivating way. What it does really well is to:
+ keep the vocabulary and grammar level both comprehensible and challenging for an advanced-beginner or intermediate learner of Italian;
+ provide opportunities to encounter vocabulary items more than once and in different contexts, which greatly increases the chance of actually learning them;
+ use vocabulary that is actually relevant and useful for someone learning Italian and who wants to be able to use that vocabulary in various social contexts.
In my experience, what's really interesting about this book is that you will probably not even realize how much Italian you have acquired through reading it until you go back to read it again or take up another book in Italian and can actually understand a lot more than you would have expected.

Amazing way to learn reading

This is an excellent resource for language learners who want to get started reading Italian (or the other languages it's available in). Olly's method for leading you through these short stories is extremely efficient and effective. It's exactly how I recommend my English students get started reading and the method I've used in my own learning, but Olly takes out all of the 'leg work'.
Usually while reading I would use a pencil and underline or write down words I don't know and then go through the hassle after of looking up the new vocabulary and trying to find the right definition. Olly not only gives you a glossary of the most challenging vocab in each chapter with the correct definition (so you don't even have to put down the book), but he also gives you summaries so you can check your comprehension. Usually, you'd need a teacher to help you with this, so these short stories just give you so much value!
I'm totally going to be using some of the other books for other languages I'm learning, hope it comes in Hebrew soon. Highly recommend!

Arrested Adolescence: A Memoir

I read this after reading Adam West's book, which isn't the greatest thing on Earth but sure made Ward's look like the trashiest cash-in. Apparently somebody told the author that the way to sell his book--since his co-star had sorta beaten him to the punch--was to sex it up. And he went overboard. I wasn't offended by this, just depressed by the obviousness of his straining to be racy as a sales point, and the adolescent pathos of the bedroom conquistador scenarios he dreamed up to serve it.

Sure, West and Ward no doubt had plenty of women throw themselves at them at the height of their fame. But Ward a.) evokes sexual interludes with prose worthy of a dimestore porn novel circa 1972, b.) describes incidents so ludicrously flattering to him (how he pleasured 8 girls in one go, gave another girl umpteen orgasms in 40 minutes) that it's really hard not to think he didn't make at least half this stuff up, c.) brags about all his conquests incessantly yet prudishly "blames" West for introducing him to such swinging habits, and d.) demonstrates a passive-aggressive hostility toward West throughout.

Oh, he tries qualifying each little stabbing remark (about West's upstaging, his ego, yes even his penis size--small next to the Boy Wonder's, of course) with some "We were great buddies nonetheless" comment. But the undercurrent of resentment is unmistakable, and it doesn't make Ward look good. (By contrast, West has nothing bad to say about Ward in HIS book, and even bemusedly cops to the slightly humiliating fact that while the network had to find ways to minimize Robin's visible "bulge," no such measure was required for his Batman.)

No doubt West left a lot of dirt out in order to stick to the high road. But you get the feeling Ward is creating dirt that never existed here just to serve his own still-immature sense of what sells and his lingering insecurity. Where West created colorful sketches of all the regular "Batman" staff/cast members and numerous guest stars, Ward rarely evinces interest in other people (unless they're another notch in his anti-chastity belt). When he's not writing about yet more dubious sexual exploits, he's writing about stunts that went wrong and other mishaps--I guess the wisdom being that when you can't give 'em sex, give 'em violence. None of this is very interesting.

I gave this two stars because it's far from the worst celebrity autobiography I've read; so many are just godawful. This one is passably written (I mean in terms of grammar, copy editing etc.--it's amazing how even those basics can be lacking in some celebrity-written or "as told to" books). It's obviously designed to be a light read, and what with the short chapters, short paragraphs, breezy uncomplicated prose etc. it's OK as that. The boring/repetitious parts are soon easily identified and thus easy to skim.

I've always figured it must be rough for most actors who become great successes when very young, let alone those who become defined by an early role and can't escape it. They often miss out on all the normal maturing phases of young adulthood (college, low-end first jobs, etc.), and on some levels stay developmentally frozen in adolescence.

That certainly seems to be the case here. Ward means to titillate us with his big-swinging-d--- adventures in the Swinging Sixties (and beyond). But the whole book becomes like the bragging of a 15 year old who grows less and less credible as they continue elaborating their alleged carnal exploits to the point where you just think "It's sad this kid thinks he needs to impress us by making up this stuff." Or even if more of it is true than one suspects, it's sad that Ward still (at 50 or whatever) sounds like a teenage braggart who doesn't realize the grownups in the room are rolling their eyes skyward while he yaps on and on about what a one-horned devil he was. He's like the guest you invite once to your home, then having had quite an overdose of bad personality in one evening, know you never will again.

Be afraid. Be very afraid...

Well, let's see... to begin with, it's not a non-fiction masterpiece. I'm giving it three stars just for Burt's gutsy approach. You know, I loved Batman - the original series with Adam West and Burt Ward from watching the show religiously as a child - this was amazing, campy brain candy. Great guests, funny (yet crazy) plots, all of that Holy Batman dialogue and animated "POW" and "WAM" nonsense. As much as I have grown to love anything retro - the cheesier the better, in fact - I did feel a bit dirty after reading this. Who knew these sexcapades were going on? My memories feel a bit soiled as well. But I did snicker a few times (along with some grimacing). Now about that cover... I don't even know where to begin. BURT! WHY? WHY? WHY WOULD'YA DO IT TO US???? Sigh. I'd better stop here. Though it is a must read for any real retro-Batman fan. Just be prepared... Be very prepared...

Holy Blabbermouth!

You gotta hand it to Burt Ward, he's not a guy hiding behind the usual mask. He really tells ALL in this memoir of sex, stardom, and life as a sidekick.

Any one of his excruciatingly detailed descriptions of his myriad sexual encounters reads a little like a sex blog, but there's something genuinely likeable about this talented guy who never seemed to grow up. And when I say, "talented," I am not referring to his dorky acting in that atrociously camp TV series. His talents consist mainly of great personal charm, a near photographic memory, early athleticism (pro skater as a toddler? believe it) and impressive martial artistry. Whatever "IT" is, he has it in spades, and the book has a kind of glow about it. He's confident, enthusiastic, funny, and unapologetic. Even when he's dishing dirt about Adam West (Batman), or devouring groupies like a bag of chips, he's utterly captivating and ...I don't believe I'm actually writing this... playful.

In between the smutty sections, there are lots of interesting tidbits about 60's network television, vignettes of what it means to make the best of being forever known as "Robin the Boy Wonder", and through it all, he manages to stay juuuuust gentlemanly enough to praise the good work of fellow actors and those whom he depended upon. But surely his wife is just a little grossed out to know that in print and wide distribution is his rating her AAA+ in "screaming wallbangers", multiple orgasms, and "tongue action" a page flip away from a lovely baby picture of their daughter. Eeeyw!

Fun reading for fans of the series or of 60's tv in general, but don't take it too seriously, fandom folks. I mean, he even admitted he never read Batman comics as a kid.
